[Beautiful Japan] World Heritage Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Routes
From ancient times Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage routes have witnessed people's thoughts and emotions.
It is the way of salvation and forgiveness of Japan, created by the pilgrims for centuries.
Nakahechi - the route spiritual to sacred Kumano connecting people`s thoughts and emotions
From about 1,200 years ago many Japanese Imperial and aristocratic families and (tanka) poets used this Nakahechi route when going on pilgrimage to Kumano-Sanzan. People used to undertake a purification rite in the rivers flowing down between the mountains to purify body, mind and soul, and then resume their journey ever deeper into the heart of this ancient route.
These hardships enabled them to appreciate the joy of approaching the other worldly abode of the Gods. They expressed their emotions in the form of poems such as those written by Fujiwara-no-Teika and Izumi-Shikibu. These were inscribed on metal plaques and mounted on rocks along the route. Many tales are told about the spiritual power and compassion of the Gods of Kumano.

5 Days on the Kumano Kodo (熊野古道) - day by day
I spent five days on a pilgrimage on the Kumano Kodo, an ancient pilgrimage route in the Wakayama Province in Japan. It was such an amazing journey.
To find out more details about my trip you can visit my blog:
To find out more about this great route, you can visit It is the official website.
I took the Nakahechi Route from Tanabe over Hongu to Nachi. It was the most popular with ancient pilgrims. The great thing about this route is that there are so many relics from the ancient times. You can really get a feeling how it was to do this pilgrimage a few hundred years ago!
I have made different edits of my experience. This edits' focus lies on following the chronological order of the journey.

Where spirits become air: the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail in Japan
In September I hiked through the shrines and forests of coastal Japan, along a trail with a story that dates back to the 11th century. I made my way west to east on the Nakahechi route, staying at traditional inns and hot spring villages along the way. The Kumano Kodo is one of only two UNESCO-designated pilgrimage trails in the world.
I was there for 3 days, but it is possible to spend more than a week and traverse the entire trail, coast to coast. Traditionally, pilgrims would visit the Kumano Sanzan, the three head shrines of the region, and walk east to west.

Dual Pilgrim Program: Kumano Kodo How-to Series
A Dual Pilgrim is someone who has walked both the Kumano Kodo and the Way of St.James (Camino de Santiago). This program was developed to celebrate, honor, and share the stories of those who have completed both of these UNESCO World Heritage pilgrimage routes. This video outlines how to complete the Kumano Kodo and register as Dual Pilgrim at the Kumano Hongu Heritage Center. Kumano Kodo: How-to Series.
The Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Route
The Kii Peninsula points south away from Kyoto and Osaka and is one of the most remote and mystical areas of Japan, despite its proximity to these great cities. Long a place of pilgrimage, the Kii Peninsula is the site of the three Grand Shrines of Kumano (Kumano Sanzan).

Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Trail Day 1: Hotel Kiri-no-sato in Takahara, Japan
I announced, Two sweaty Americans are here and staggered into the glare of a television video crew in Hotel Kiri-no-sato. Owner John translated for the Japanese-speaking crew who probably thought we were insane. But who knows. Perhaps our moment of glory isn't on the cutting room floor.
Who would expect such a nice place in small Takahara?

Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Trail Day 2: Takahara to Chikatsuyu, Japan
We asked a worker at Hotel Kiri-no-Sato in Takahara if he would be willing to drive us a short distance to the trail, knocking several hours off from today's journey. It wasn't the walking distance but a steep decline on the trail that would play havoc on my bony knees.
Chikatsuyu is a small village located halfway between Takijiri and the Hong Grand Shrine. And you can't ask for nicer people or better food than at Ryokan Tsukinoya.
