म्भलगढ़ का दुर्ग राजस्थान ही नहीं भारत के सभी दुर्गों में विशिष्ठ स्थान रखता है। उदयपुर से 78 km दूर समुद्र तल से 1087 मीटर ऊँचा और 30 किमी व्यास में फैला यह दुर्ग मेवाड़ के यशश्वी महाराणा कुम्भा की सूझबूझ व प्रतिभा का अनुपम स्मारक है। इस दुर्ग का निर्माण सम्राट अशोक के द्वितीय पुत्र संप्रति के बनाये दुर्ग के अवशेषों पर 1443 से शुरू होकर 15 वर्षों बाद 1458 में पूरा हुआ था। दुर्ग का निर्माण कार्य पूर्ण होने पर महाराणा कुम्भा ने सिक्के डलवाये जिन पर दुर्ग और उसका नाम अंकित था। वास्तुशास्त्र के नियमानुसार बने इस दुर्ग में प्रवेश द्वार, प्राचीर, जलाशय, बाहर जाने के लिए संकटकालीन द्वार, महल, मंदिर,स्तम्भ,छत्रियां,यज्ञ वेदी इमारते बनी है।

Kumbhalgarh Fort is a Mewar fortress on the westerly range of Aravalli Hills, in the Rajsamand District of Rajasthan state in western India. It is a World Heritage Site included in Hill Forts of Rajasthan. Built during the course of the 15th century by Rana Kumbha and enlarged through the 19th century, Kumbhalgarh is also the birthplace of Maharana Pratap, the great king and warrior of Mewar. Occupied until the late 19th century, the fort is now open to the public and is spectacularly lit for a few minutes each evening. Kumbalgarh is situated 82 km northwest of Udaipur by road. It is the most important fort in Mewar after Chittaurgarh.

Kumbhalgarh Fort Story & History in Hindi : आपने ” The Great Wall Of China ” के बारे में तो सुना ही होगा जो कि विशव कि सबसे बड़ी दीवार है पर क्या आपने विशव कि दूसरी सबसे लम्बी दीवार के बारे में सुना है जो कि भारत में स्थित है? यह है राजस्थान के राजसमंद जिले में स्थित कुम्भलगढ़ फोर्ट कि दीवार जो कि 36 किलोमीटर लम्बी तथा 15 फीट चौड़ी है। इस फोर्ट का निर्माण महाराणा कुम्भा ने करवाया था। यह दुर्ग समुद्रतल से करीब 1100 मीटर कि ऊचाईं पर स्थित है। इसका निर्माण सम्राट अशोक के दूसरे पुत्र सम्प्रति के बनाए दुर्ग के अवशेषो पर किया गया था। इस दुर्ग के पूर्ण निर्माण में 15 साल (1443-1458) लगे थे। दुर्ग का निर्माण पूर्ण होने पर महाराणा कुम्भ ने सिक्के बनवाये थे जिन पर दुर्ग और इसका नाम अंकित था।
दुर्ग कई घाटियों व पहाड़ियों को मिला कर बनाया गया है जिससे यह प्राकृतिक सुरक्षात्मक आधार पाकर अजेय रहा। इस दुर्ग में ऊँचे स्थानों पर महल,मंदिर व आवासीय इमारते बनायीं गई और समतल भूमि का उपयोग कृषि कार्य के लिए किया गया वही ढलान वाले भागो का उपयोग जलाशयों के लिए कर इस दुर्ग को यथासंभव स्वाबलंबी बनाया गया। इस दुर्ग के अंदर 360 से ज्यादा मंदिर हैं जिनमे से 300 प्राचीन जैन मंदिर तथा बाकि हिन्दू मंदिर हैं।
इस दुर्ग के भीतर एक औरगढ़ है जिसे कटारगढ़ के नाम से जाना जाता है यह गढ़ सात विशाल द्वारों व सुद्रढ़ प्राचीरों से सुरक्षित है। इस गढ़ के शीर्ष भाग में बादल महल है व कुम्भा महल सबसे ऊपर है। महाराणा प्रताप की जन्म स्थली कुम्भलगढ़ एक तरह से मेवाड़ की संकटकालीन राजधानी रहा है। महाराणा कुम्भा से लेकर महाराणा राज सिंह के समय तक मेवाड़ पर हुए आक्रमणों के समय राजपरिवार इसी दुर्ग में रहा। यहीं पर पृथ्वीराज और महाराणा सांगा का बचपन बीता था। महाराणा उदय सिंह को भी पन्ना धाय ने इसी दुर्ग में छिपा कर पालन पोषण किया था। हल्दी घाटी के युद्ध में हार के बाद महाराणा प्रताप भी काफी समय तक इसी दुर्ग में रहे।

राजसमंद के अजेय दुर्ग और महाराणा प्रताप की जन्मस्थली स्थित कुंभलगढ़ किले के परकोटा क्षेत्र के जंगल में अज्ञात कारणों से भीषण आग लग गई....... जिससे परकोटे का अधिकांश क्षेत्र आग की चपेट में आ गया......आग की सूचना पर स्थानीय लोग मौके पर पहुंचे और वन विभाग की टीम को सूचना दी..... करीब दो घण्टे की कडी मशक्कत के बाद स्थानीय लोगों ने अपने स्तर पर आग को बुझाया.....जबकि वन विभाग के कर्मचारी भी संसाधनों के अभाव में प्रयास करते रहे......जानकारी के अनुसार इस आग से बडे भू-भाग में फैली घास जलकर राख हो गई...... वहीं आग लगने के कारणों का अभी कुछ पता नही चल पाया है.....
