Guided Tour in Barrio de la Latina, Madrid - Spain 4k Travel Channel
Barrio de La Latina, the name of the neighborhood in the center of Madrid goes back to Beatriz Galindo. Born in Salamanca, she was a writer, teacher, humanist and also interested in physics and mathematics. Beatriz Galindo was one of the most educated women at her time. In addition, she was very charitable, what she could afford due to her wealth.
After she taught Queen Isabella of Castile and her children in Latin, she was nicknamed La Latina. She was one of the first women who was active in public life already during the Renaissance. Beatriz founded schools and hospitals in Spain, among others the Hospital of the Holy Cross (Santa Cruz de Madrid) in 1506. This justified her charitable reputation and the neighborhood where she once lived was named after her.
La Latina is one of the oldest section of Madrid, with narrow streets and large squares. Here you find the perfect combination between tradition and modernity, a neighborhood that has something to offer for everyone.
The tour with our guide Verónica Walde starts at Teatro Real. The theater was opened in 1850 by Isabella II and soon became one the most important stages of Europe. During our visit, a huge screen and big speaker towers had been installed on the balcony of the west facade. Everyone could listen and watch parts of the opera program. The acoustic quality was excellent.
On the opposite side is the Palacio Real de Madrid - the Royal Palace. Verónica gives us a short historical overview of Madrid.
Until the 18th century an Alcazar, a Moorish castle castle, stood on the place of the present palace. It was destroyed by a fire in 1734. After the War of the Spanish Succession, the Bourbons came to the power. Philip V now wanted to have a palace coequal to the Escorial palace of the Habsburgs. He commissioned Juan Bautista Sacchetti and Francisco de Sabatini with the construction. But it was King Charles III who first moved into the building in 1764.
Laterally next to the castle is the Almudena Cathedral (Santa María la Real de La Almudena) and in between the Plaza de la Armeria.

3. VIDEO GUIDE ????

Calle Cava Baja is a fantastic street for a tapas crawl in Madrid. It’s got about 50 tapas bars in just one street, and is in the heart of the famous La Latina neighbourhood. But with so many tapas bars, how can you pick the good from the bad? That’s where this video comes in? Yoly and I decided to hit 7 of our favourites.
Here is Calle Cava Baja on a map:
1. Taberna La Concha: I love this spot for a pre-lunch vermouth. They make their own vermouth, and serve it with a few extra ingredients to give it extra kick. They always pair it with a delicious tapa. And their cooked tapas and wine list are also excellent. A great start!
2. Diaz y Larrouy: The wine bar has been around since 1992 and so is one of the grandfather’s of this street. They have 30-40 wines per glass, and serve delicious tostas. An excellent option for cava by the glass.
3. La Posada de la Villa: There has been a posada (or inn) here since 1642, and I adore hitting the bar in this old tavern. It’s more of a restaurant, but the bar is a great place to grab a glass and even just enjoy the free tapa. It’s just full of history!
4. La Posada del Dragón: These guys do more modern tapas, and I love their tomato salad. But beyond the food, this place is extra special as beneath the glass floor you can see the remains of the medieval walls that once surrounded Madrid.
Honourable mention: La Perejila - great little tapas bar that just didn’t make the final cut.
5. Casa Lucas: Famous on Calle Cava Baja. This place is always packed, but does delicious modern tapas and tostas, and they have an excellent wine list. Don’t worry if you can’t get a table - just squeeze on up at the bar!
6. Taberna Tempranillo: Another classic wine bar that’s been around for a number of years. These guys do an eclectic selection of modern dishes, as well as tostas. And of course great wine by the glass. Also - the wine rack against the back wall is spectacular!
7. Los Huevos de Lucio: Opposite is a famous restaurant called Casa Lucio. And in that restaurant they’re famous for their huevos estrellados (aka. Huevos rotos or broken eggs). Opposite Los Huevos de Lucio is their tavern, and you can get the same dish there. It’s simple, but it’s delicious!

Exploring Madrid - La Latina neighbourhood
In this, the second episode of the When in Spain podcast show I take you for a wander around La Latina, the neighbourhood where I live and one of the oldest and most famous in Madrid. We’ll take in the sights and sounds while I talk about everyday life in the barrio and offer a few personal observations.
I’d say it’s still a pretty authentic barrio as far as central Madrid neighbourhoods go. It’s bustling, noisy, beautiful and gritty. It’s an everyday working neighbourhood that still manages to retain its own Spanish, Madrileñan and Castizo* identity despite a growing influx of tourists, immigrants and international students. All seem to rub shoulders fairly oblivious to each other’s existence – so far.
However, the clank of plastic wheels from ‘carry-on’ suitcases as they’re dragged across the barrio’s maze of cobbled streets is becoming an increasingly common sound and one that often wakes me up and 6am. As abuelos pass away their apartments are being sold on and devoured by gangs of Airbnb-ers. This has pushed up rents and house prices in the last couple of years and, in turn gradually transforming La Latina into one of the more expensive areas in the Spanish capital. That said, this ain’t no Barceloneta or Bario Gotico, two of Barcelona’s most tourist-plagued, once-traditional neighbourhoods.
