Our Lady of La Vang (Vietnamese: Đức Mẹ La Vang) is where Maria Epiphany refers to a reported Marian apparition at a time when Catholics were persecuted and killed in Vietnam. The Shrine of our Lady of La Vang (Basilica of Our Lady of La Vang) is situated in what is today Hai Phu commune in Hải Lăng District of Quảng Trị Province in Central Vietnam.
Fearing the spread of the Catholicism, the Cảnh Thịnh Emperor restricted the practice of Catholicism in the country in 1798. Soon thereafter, the emperor issued an anti-Catholic edict in which persecution ensued.
Many people sought refuge in the rainforest of La Vang in Quảng Trị Province, Vietnam, and many became very ill. While hiding in the jungle, the community gathered every night at the foot of a tree to pray the rosary. One night, an apparition surprised them. In the branches of the tree a lady appeared, wearing the traditional Vietnamese áo dài dress and holding a child in her arms, with two angels beside her. The people present interpreted the vision as the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus Christ. They said that Our Lady comforted them and told them to boil leaves from the trees for medicine to cure the illness. Legend states that the term La Vang was a derivative of the Vietnamese word meaning crying out. Modern scholars believe it comes from the ancient practice of naming a location for a genus of a tree or plant native to the area, La meaning leaf and 'Vang herbal seeds.
In 1802 the Christians returned to their villages, passing on the story of the apparition in La Vang and its message. As the story of the apparition spreads, many came to pray at this site and to offer incense. In 1820, a chapel was built.
From 1830-1885 another wave of persecutions decimated the Christian population, during the height of which the chapel in honour of Our Lady of La Vang was destroyed. In 1886, construction on a new chapel began. Following its completion, Bishop Gaspar (Loc) consecrated the chapel in honour of Our Lady Help of Christians, in 1901.
On December 8, 1954, the statue of Our Lady of La Vang was brought from Tri Bun back to the holy shrine. The Vietnamese Bishops Conference chose the church of Our Lady of La Vang as the National Shrine in honour of the Immaculate Conception. La Vang became the National Marian Center of Vietnam on April 13, 1961. Pope John XXIII elevated the Church of Our Lady of La Vang to the rank of a minor basilica on August 22, 1961.
Though there is no official Vatican recognition of this event as a Marian apparition, on June 19, 1998, Pope John Paul II publicly recognized the importance of Our Lady of La Vang and expressed desire to rebuild the La Vang Basilica in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the first vision.[1]
In the Philippines, the chapel of Our Lady of La Vang is now the Roman Catholic parish church and national shrine in Puerto Princesa City in Palawan. Became has a patroness of Puerto Princesa and patroness of Palawan.

Our Lady of La Vang (Vietnamese: Đức Mẹ La Vang) refers to a reported Marian apparition at a time when Catholics were persecuted and killed in Vietnam. The Shrine of our Lady of La Vang (Basilica of Our Lady of La Vang) is situated in what is today Hai Phu commune in Hải Lăng District of Quảng Trị Province in Central Vietnam
According to the Archives of the Archdiocese of Hue. Under the reign of Emperor Canh Thinh (crowned in 1792). With the religious ban issued on August 17, 1798, many Catholics near Dinh Cat hill (now Quang Tri town) escaped to the jungle in order to seek shelter. They ended up at La Vang. The sacred forest was extremely tough conditions to live in due to lack of food/water plus there was a constant fear of military and wild animals attacking. Faithful Believers only knew to do one thing -- that is praying to God and the Blessed Virgin Mother Mary. They often gather to Pray together and to comfort each other.
Our Lady of La Vang
One day, while they were praying around banyan trees, they suddenly see a beautiful woman, holding baby Jesus. They immediately recognized the Virgin Mary. Mother Mary taught them to pick leaves from plants surrounding them and to boil it to help heal the sick.
Since then, more eyewitness accounts have been reported of Our Lady of La Vang appearing in the forest of La Vang and through time, news of La Vang spread everywhere. And many faithful believers come to La Vang to pray. Our Lady of La Vang is often symbolized by a Vietnamese woman in Ao Dai (Traditional Vietnamese Dress) …

Lavang Church – home of Virgin Mary apparition
La Vang or Lavang is a locale in Quảng Trị Province, Vietnam. It is the site of the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of La Vang, a Roman Catholic sanctuary, commemorating a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary that was seen there in 1798. The site has been rebuilt on several occasions and is an important site of pilgrimage for Catholics in Vietnam, as well as for the Catholic Overseas Vietnamese community. Many Vietnamese Catholic parishes throughout the world are named for Our Lady of La Vang.
The Apparition Shrine, which was the area where Our Lady appeared, had a recent renovation in 2008. Areas surrounding the shrine including the Main Sanctuary Gate, were renvoated. The La Vang Boarding House was also recently constructed to accommodate the pilgrims.

Quang Tri is a province on the North Central Coast region of Vietnam, north of the former imperial capital of Huế.
An estimated 800,000 tons out of the 7,8 million tons of munition dropped by U.S forces on Vietnam, failed to detonate, contaminating around 20% of the country. A smaller but unknown amount of unexploded ordnance from North Vietnamese (and allies) activities also remains. The most heavily contaminated province is Quảng Trị, where fighting was at its fiercest.

On Sunday Nov. 29, 2015 a statue of Our Lady of Lavang, originally venerated by Christians in Vietnam, was enshrined in the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood located at 113 Baxter Street, New York, NY 10013. A large gathering of people from the Vietnamese community and others were present.

In the late 1700’s Roman Catholics in Vietnam were outlawed by authorities via edict.
“The edict resulted in the fleeing of many families to the rain forest of La Vang in the Quang Tri Province in central Vietnam. Many suffered from the bitter cold weather, jungle sickness and starvation and fell ill. While hiding, the Catholics gathered nightly at the foot of a banyan tree to pray the Rosary to seek courage and find comfort in their distress.
One night an apparition appeared. It was a woman dressed in the traditional Vietnamese áo dài dress, holding a child and surrounded by two angels. Those present interpreted the vision as the Virgin Mother and the infant Jesus. They said that the Lady comforted them and told them to boil leaves to provide medicine to cure the illness.

Đại Hội La Vang 15 diễn ra trong 6 ngày, 3 ngày vọng lễ và 3 ngày chính lễ. Đức TGM Phêrô Máctinô Ngô Đình Thục chủ trì Đại Hội.
Đây là lần Đại Hội có quy mô và vĩ đại nhất từ trước tới nay, với nội dung phong phú và khối lượng công việc khổng lồ. Chính trong lần Đại Hội này, Đức cha PM Ngô Đình Thục, TGM Huế, thay mặt HĐGMV đã long trọng tuyên bố: Kể từ nay, Vương Cung Thánh Đường và khu vực La Vang là Nhà của Mẹ, Đất của Mẹ, là Trung Tâm Thánh Mẫu Toàn Quốc.
Đức cha Phêrô Maria Phạm Ngọc Chi chủ lễ rước kiệu Đức Mẹ. Có sự tham dự của 3 vị Tổng Giám mục[, 10 vị Giám mục, 300 Linh mục, 1000 tu sĩ nam nữ và khoảng 300.000 người lương giáo đến từ các giáo phận: Huế, Kontum, Nha Trang, Long xuyên, Vĩnh Long, Sài Gòn, Qui Nhơn, Mỹ Tho, Cần Thơ, Đà Lạt, Nam Vang và Ai Lao...
Đặc biệt có hai phái đoàn cao cấp của chính phủ VNCH, một do tổng thống Ngô Đình Diệm (16.08), một do phó tổng thống Nguyễn Ngọc Thơ (21.08), và tướng Hungari Perakiraly đến tham dự Đại Hội.
