Teenager Rescued from 270-Foot Waterfall in Washington State
A hiking expedition turned into a harrowing experience for a teenager from Burien, Washington when slipped while taking a dip in the Wallace River.
Thirteen year old William Hickman was hiking with his father on Saturday evening (May 19) and stopped to cool off in the river, when he lost his footing and slipped on the rocks. Hickman was carried away down a 10-foot waterfall, and scrambled to safety on a narrow ledge beneath a large overhanging rock, just inches away from the main waterfall that plunged 270 feet.
When help arrived, they found Hickman drenched and crouching unsteadily beneath the rock. Police later said the rescue operation was hampered by the overhanging rock that jutted out blocking a clear vertical descent by the helicopter.
Video released on Tuesday (May 22) shows rescue workers using a ladder bridge placed across the fast-moving river to get the teenager. He was fitted with a harness and then helped up the slippery rocks by a rescuer worker. Ten workers camped overnight with Hickman, before he was lifted to safety by a helicopter early Sunday morning.
Police said Hickman seemed unharmed at the time of the rescue but was going to be examined by a physician.
WA State Homecoming Adventure: Part 3 (The Granite Falls Fish Ladder)
In July of 2017 I had the opportunity to take a “homecoming trip” to WA State after over 5 1/2 years. In part 3 of this series we’ll check out a quick, easy stop just outside of Granite Falls, WA. “The Fish Ladder” is a cool spot worth checking out if you’re in the area. Boasting sheer cliffs, powerful moving water, beautiful falls and interesting rock formations, it’s a great place to swing by before or after conquering one of the bigger hikes in the area, or maybe after grabbing breakfast at one of the quaint local restaurants or coffee stands. The Pacific Northwest is an amazing place, especially when you consider that there are places like this “just off the side of the road!”
Later on in the series I’ll take you on the second of two great hikes just outside my hometown (with more scenery that will blow you away), we’ll spend a little more time with my family and I’ll share some more of the sights and sounds of this “diamond in the rough” little town I’ve only come to love more as the years have gone by. No matter where I roam the PNW runs deep in my roots, and I hope this series will help others to see why. Thanks for watching!

Waterfall in the Sky, North Cascades National Park
This cascade is so high up that one does not notice it unless one looks up to gaze at the snow peak. One of many unnamed cascades in North Cascade National Park in Washington State, this is one of my favorites. I saw it when I first visited in 2011, very glad that found it again in 2013! So very pretty!
Still pics are here
Location : This one is also along Washington State Route 20 along Skagit River, near Newhalem, WA; in Whatcom County. On eastbound State Route 20, it is exactly 1.4 miles BEFORE Mile Marker 177. There are a few roadside paved but unmarked parking areas next to the road where this Cascade is located, pay attention, you will find this Waterfall!
Enjoy!

Amazing Ice Caves in Washington State in the Pacific Northwest
* The mouth of this cave collapsed one week after I shot the video, killing 1 hiker and wounding 4 others.
Went for a great father's day daytrip out toward Mt Loop Highway that started with a picnic by the Big 4 Ice Caves and ended with some naked playing in the river with my 4 year old son while mom napped on a tapestry by the waterfall. Great day to celebrate fatherhood. y website is at
