Basics of Wool Spinning at Foxfire Museum and Heritage Center
Sharon Grist takes the time to teach Little Miss Homemaker a bit about carding, spinning , and then plying wool. We certainly appreciate her sharing years of expertise with us.
With her permission and that of Foxfire museum, we share this video and a bit of information about Foxfire's Village Weaver.
Sharon's love for weaving began at age eleven when her family visited
Southern Highlands Handicraft Guild Fair in Asheville, NC. I saw a handweaving demonstration. I was mesmerized. From then on I knew that weaving would have a place in my life.
And what a place it is! Mrs. Sharon Grist is surely a valuable asset to the Foxfire Museum in Mountain City, GA, right there in the Appalachian Blue Ridge Mountains.
Sharon apprenticed at Rabun Gap Crafts in 1978 and 1979. She opened her own professional studio in 1981. Preferring a diverse career, she divides her time among teaching, demonstrating and exhibiting, as well as designing and producing garments, home accessories and one-of-a-kind pieces for professionals and individuals.
We at Heritage Ways appreciate Sharon's love for this beautiful craft. In her own words, In our fast-paced, high tech society it is necessary for each of us to enjoy something simple and beautiful and created by hand. Handwoven goods bring pleasure to the eye, to the touch, and to the spirit because each piece is created individually.....Weaving is my way of sharing beauty and joy-and my love for life.

Susan R. Stein: Thomas Jefferson: Planting the Arts in America
Susan R. Stein, Richard Gilder Senior Curator, Monticello
September 12, 2018
As an architect, designer, collector, and patron of the arts, Thomas Jefferson understood the importance of the arts in forging an American identity, especially through the recognition of its founders. This talk explores how and why Jefferson recommended that Europe’s most famous sculptor, Antonio Canova, receive the commission to execute the sculpture of George Washington for North Carolina’s state capitol.

How zip codes helped organize America
Zip codes, explained.
Subscribe to our channel!
Zip codes were invented in 1963 to help the United States Postal Service deal with huge increases in mail volume. The Zone Improvement Plan, or “ZIP” code system of addressing, organized mail delivery by dividing the country into 10 regions and assigning five digits increasing in specificity: from region to large sorting centers to smaller post offices. To promote the new system, the USPS released publicity materials featuring Mr. Zip, a cartoon character, and a song about zip codes from a band called The Swingin’ Six.
As the nation grew, the USPS updated zip codes by adding a four-digit suffix in 1983. The new suffix corresponds to specific destinations, such as one side of a street or a certain floor of an office building. Now, geocoding technology has created the possibility of even more specific addressing.

I Went Magnet Fishing In The River and I Found Someone's Lost Magnet | Nugget Noggin
This was a very awesome magnet fishing adventure. I started out at an old grist mill site, then went exploring up the creek and found several Native American Bedrock Mortars. Afterwards I went Kayaking down the river and discovered a rope tied onto a tree, and it was going out in the water. I followed the rope with my kayak and found a magnet on the end of it. Someone had already beat me to the site, and got their magnet stuck between two rocks to where they had to leave it. I later managed to find a cell phone and several huge pieces of metal . I'm very impressed with the power of my new magnet, I plan on using it again in the future.

RARE 1959 Otis Hydraulic Elevator (Sadly Modded) at Cove Motel, Daytona Beach, FL
Filmed September 2018.
Well, this would've been an EPIC find if only it were original..... Otis Hydros installed before the 60s are VERY RARE as Otis rivaled against Rotary and Dover at the time stating Tractions were superior till Otis Starting making Hydros more often in the Mid 60s. As a result, it's VERY RARE to see an Otis Hydro installed before the Mid 60s. This is an independently owned motel, that has an exterior that SCREAMS 1950s, but sadly the Florida Codes got to the Elevator and now this thing has DISGUSTING Innovation Security Crap!!! But since Antique Otis hydros as a whole are rare, even though this has a Disgusting mod, I still filmed it anyway cause of how rare of a find they are. Again though, if only it were original.... That all being said, enjoy!
Installed: 1959 (Otis Black Button)
Modernized: Circa 1990s or 2000s (Innovation Security Fixtures, Motor and Controller likely replaced as well. Door frame on 1 replaced, lantern added.)

Auburn Coach Wife Kristi Malzahn Agrees with Match & eHarmony: Men are Jerks
My advice is this: Settle! That's right. Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling Bravo! in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go. Based on my observations, in fact, settling will probably make you happier in the long run, since many of those who marry with great expectations become more disillusioned with each passing year. (It's hard to maintain that level of zing when the conversation morphs into discussions about who's changing the diapers or balancing the checkbook.)
Obviously, I wasn't always an advocate of settling. In fact, it took not settling to make me realize that settling is the better option, and even though settling is a rampant phenomenon, talking about it in a positive light makes people profoundly uncomfortable. Whenever I make the case for settling, people look at me with creased brows of disapproval or frowns of disappointment, the way a child might look at an older sibling who just informed her that Jerry's Kids aren't going to walk, even if you send them money. It's not only politically incorrect to get behind settling, it's downright un-American. Our culture tells us to keep our eyes on the prize (while our mothers, who know better, tell us not to be so picky), and the theme of holding out for true love (whatever that is—look at the divorce rate) permeates our collective mentality.
Even situation comedies, starting in the 1970s with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and going all the way to Friends, feature endearing single women in the dating trenches, and there's supposed to be something romantic and even heroic about their search for true love. Of course, the crucial difference is that, whereas the earlier series begins after Mary has been jilted by her fiancé, the more modern-day Friends opens as Rachel Green leaves her nice-guy orthodontist fiancé at the altar simply because she isn't feeling it. But either way, in episode after episode, as both women continue to be unlucky in love, settling starts to look pretty darn appealing. Mary is supposed to be contentedly independent and fulfilled by her newsroom family, but in fact her life seems lonely. Are we to assume that at the end of the series, Mary, by then in her late 30s, found her soul mate after the lights in the newsroom went out and her work family was disbanded? If her experience was anything like mine or that of my single friends, it's unlikely.
And while Rachel and her supposed soul mate, Ross, finally get together (for the umpteenth time) in the finale of Friends, do we feel confident that she'll be happier with Ross than she would have been had she settled down with Barry, the orthodontist, 10 years earlier? She and Ross have passion but have never had long-term stability, and the fireworks she experiences with him but not with Barry might actually turn out to be a liability, given how many times their relationship has already gone up in flames. It's equally questionable whether Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, who cheated on her kindhearted and generous boyfriend, Aidan, only to end up with the more exciting but self-absorbed Mr. Big, will be better off in the framework of marriage and family. (Some time after the breakup, when Carrie ran into Aidan on the street, he was carrying his infant in a Baby Björn. Can anyone imagine Mr. Big walking around with a Björn?)
