Backpacking Guatemala - Lake Atitlan - San Juan la Laguna
Hey Stephen Here!
Sabrina and I take the public boat to San Juan la Laguna. What an incredible little village. Cafe San Juan has the best coffee I've tried to date, here in Guatemala. The coffee that grows in and around Lake Atitlan is some of the best in the world - in my opinion.
San Juan la Laguna is a peaceful and friendly village on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala.

Today we head to Lake Atitlan one of the most beautiful lakes in the world! It took us 3 hours to drive from Guatemala City to Lake Atitlan. On the way we passed through Solola and hopped on a quick boat ride from Panajachel to San Juan La Laguna.
San Juan La Laguna is famous for its painters, coffee and it's maya textiles. We first stopped at Cafe San Juan to drink a few different coffee roast. Maya coffee in San Juan La Laguna is unreal!
Then we made our way through the town admiring the murals and galleries. We saw a vendor selling some incredible Guatemalan snow cones and I had to try it. They put roasted corn and lime mixed with a few other flavors and its so good!
Lastly we stopped at Casa Flor Ixcaco to see how these Maya women weave these beautiful textiles. From scarfs, to t-shirts to even some incredible baby shoes. A must visit and you have to buy!!
Next time you head to Guatemala I recommend working with my friends at A La Carta Tours:

Lake Atitlan Towns: San Juan La Laguna
San Juan La Laguna is located on Lake Atitlan. I recommend taking a boat taxi from Panajachel and exploring. A couple low-key hours in San Juan La Laguna should suffice.

Lake Atitlan, San Juan, Food and Coffee Tour | GUATEMALA TRAVEL VLOG
In today's vlog we share our first impressions of the quiet but beautiful coastal town of San Juan La Laguna on Lake Atitlan to try some amazing food and take a Coffee Tour.
In the first half of the video, we head to San Juan in the late afternoon to get a feel of the town and see what is on offer. We found a working coffee plantation and the most beautiful bar set on the lakeside. The next day we headed back to the plantation to try some of the best coffee we have ever tasted, we find an artisanal chocolate producer and eat some amazing food at a fantastic gem of a cafe.

Boat San Pedro La Laguna to Santiago Atitlan Lake Atitlan
Travelling by boat (lancha) is the safest way of moving between San Pedro la Laguna and Santiago Atitlan, on the shore of Lake Atitlan (Lago de Atitlan), Solola, Guatemala. Boats to Santiago Atitlan run from a different dock then the ones to Panajachel (and San Marcos, Santa Cruz, San Juan etc). On Google Maps you will see this dock as Embarcadero para Atitlan. It`s a 15-20 min walk between the two (through Gringolandia, the party area in San Pedro, see below).
These boats run hourly in the best case (if they get full or at least close to full) and cost 25 GTQ. The journey should be around 30 and, since the boats are a bit bigger than the ones for Panajachel, also a bit smoother.
There is also a road between Santiago Atitlan and San Pedro and chicken buses go that way. It used to be a bit unsafe but not anymore, at least during the day time. Lanchas are much safer anyway!
Boat price PANAJACHEL to:
SANTA CRUZ = 10 GTQ, JAIBALITO = 10 GTQ, TZUNUNA = 20 GTQ

Eco-Weaving at Ixoq Ajkeem in San Juan La Laguna, Lake Atitlán
Yesterday in our last full day around Lake Atitlán we had the chance to visit the association Ixoq Ajkeem. Since we are always looking for local foundations, businesses, organizations or initiatives which we can learn from, it was a pleasure that Katarina did a very informative and well-presented tour through all the economically and therefore sustainable weaving process, starting from the the plants to the cotton, the natural coloring to final weaving.
Katarina spoke well-pronounced Spanish. Therefore, it is a good 12-minute lesson to learn Spanish.
At the end her colleague Lisbeth even explained us in detail how show does the weaving.
Learn more about Ixoq Ajkeem on sanjuanlalaguna.org.

Episode 4 Lago Atitlan, San Pedro
San Pedro la Laguna is a sleepy little Guatemalan town on the shore of Lago Atitlan. We can't say how much we loved it in this town. Lake Atitlan is full of panoramic vistas and cool, clear, blue water that is a treat to swim in. Another thing that we loved about San Pedro was the culture. Most of the people who live there speak an ethnic dialect called Tzutujil and know Spanish only as a second language. The traditions of the Maya are alive and well in this town. There is even a co-op of women who work to preserve weaving techniques that produce some of the most beautiful textiles in the world. Join us on our adventure in San Pedro la Laguna!

Lake Atitlán, Guatemala: A Day in San Juan, San Pedro and Santiago
I took a tour from Panajachel, Guatemala (about 2 hours from Antigua) to villages surrounding Lake Atitlán, including San Juan, San Pedro and Santiago. The lake is the deepest in Central America and one of Guatemala's top tourist destinations. Lake Atitlán is definitely a must-see when in Guatemala.
