The gateway to the enormous Lake Sniardwy, called “the Masurian sea”, Mikolajki is a smart and cosy town with some delightful red-roofed houses and three bridges. Though tourism has taken over the town with hotels, shops and eateries, the effects of this have not been too detrimental and Mikolajki still manages to preserve its charm. So, whatever your idea of holidays on the lakes, Mikolajki is sure to deliver what you enjoy.
The town is situated on Lake Mikolajskie and its marina, the busiest in Masuria.
Śniardwy (German: About this sound der Spirdingsee) is a lake in the Masurian Lake District of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, Poland. It is the largest lake in Poland with an area of 113.8 square kilometres (43.9 sq mi). It is 22.1 kilometres (13.7 mi) long and 13.4 kilometres (8.3 mi) wide. The maximum depth is 23 metres (75 feet).

Mikołajki was first documented in 1444. The settlement grew during the 18th century, receiving its town privileges as Nikolaiken in 1726. Because of its location on Lake Śniardwy, the fishery of Nikolaiken ensured continued prosperity; the white fish of the region were especially popular throughout East Prussia.
Until 1945 the town was part of Landkreis Sensburg within East Prussia in the Kingdom of Prussia. During World War II Nikolaiken was one of the few East Prussian towns not destroyed deliberately by elements of the Red Army. It became part of Poland as Mikołajki in 1945. .
The town was a growing tourist center before the war, and is now one of the largest tourist attractions in Masuria

That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

FROM WHEELCHAIR NOMAD DIARY...2003 After breakfast Jurek told us about his friend Tedeusz (Ted) Gotebieuski who built this resort. “He started a small bakery in a garage and expanded from there. Today he exports a large range of cookies worldwide. He bought this land twenty years ago for nothing, and initially started with a cement truck and a few men. Now he operates this huge resort with full occupancy eighty percent of the year. He has also opened a number of similar hotels in other parts of Poland. I first met him when I was making furniture in the area, and I got a contract to make some of the furniture for this hotel. He’s a man I truly respect. I’ve made about seventy-five trips to this hotel in the last nine years.”
We explored around the hotel with Jurek pushing my wheelchair. Trees, gardens filled with flowering plants and rolling green pastureland, surround the hotel. We passed the staff quarters, which included a restaurant and stables for twenty or so horses. The restaurant is built on an equestrian theme and features large picture windows, which look directly into the horse stalls. One can dine here with a large horse a metre away, nearly looking over your shoulder. The hotel, of course, gives riding lessons and offers carriage tours and I’m intrigued watching little girls on ponies, having a wonderful time.

The Great Masurian Lake district (Kraina Wielkich Jezior Mazurskich), east of Olsztyn, is a verdant land of rolling hills dotted with countless lakes, healthy little farms, scattered tracts of forest and small towns. The district is centred on Lake Śniardwy (114 sq km), Poland’s largest lake. The lakes are well connected by rivers and canals to form an extensive system of waterways.
