Why you should make useless things | Simone Giertz
In this joyful, heartfelt talk featuring demos of her wonderfully wacky creations, Simone Giertz shares her craft: making useless robots. Her inventions -- designed to chop vegetables, cut hair, apply lipstick and more -- rarely (if ever) succeed, and that's the point. The true beauty of making useless things [is] this acknowledgment that you don't always know what the best answer is, Giertz says. It turns off that voice in your head that tells you that you know exactly how the world works. Maybe a toothbrush helmet isn't the answer, but at least you're asking the question.

The Human Microbiome: Emerging Themes at the Horizon of the 21st Century (Day 2)
Air date: Thursday, August 17, 2017, 8:15:00 AM
Category: Conferences
Runtime: 07:32:24
Description: The 2017 NIH-wide microbiome workshop will strive to cover advances that reveal the specific ways in which the microbiota influences the physiology of the host, both in a healthy and in a diseased state and how the microbiota may be manipulated, either at the community, population, organismal or molecular level, to maintain and/or improve the health of the host. The goal will be to seek input from a trans-disciplinary group of scientists to identify 1) knowledge gaps, 2) technical hurdles, 3) new approaches and 4) research opportunities that will inform the development of novel prevention and treatment strategies based on host/microbiome interactions over the next ten years.

The House is poised to debate articles of impeachment against President Trump alleging he abused his power and obstructed Congress, setting the stage for an extraordinary rebuke from the chamber of Congress most responsive to the will of the American people. For live updates:
The House will convene at 9 a.m. to begin debate leading up to the final impeachment votes. After an hour of debate on the rule governing the proceedings, six hours of debate on the articles will be divided equally between Democrats and Republicans, who could introduce procedural obstacles that would stretch the proceedings into the evening.

The 2017 Ideas Conference
While it’s early in the Trump administration, it’s clear that progressives will need to resist and respond aggressively every single day. It is in this spirit of resistance that progressives will be able to protect the gains we’ve made in the past eight years, and work toward further progressive change in the future.
Charting a path for progressives in 2017 and into the future is one of our highest priorities at the Center for American Progress. The Ideas Conference brings together national leaders of the progressive cause. This daylong conference will be our signature event of the year. We will host leading elected officials, thought leaders, movement leaders, and others to discuss their ideas to move the country forward and address the needs of all Americans, covering topics from economics to energy, national security to the rise of the Resist movement.
