Clearly not an expert on the subject of weaving, but I had the opportunity today to learn something about these Laos traditions. I was translating on the fly from Laos to English. If anyone in the know has corrections on the terminology or steps I missed, feel free to post in the comments.

INTRO: Lao Traditional Textile Exhibition opened in Vientiane, presenting exclusive collection of ancient textiles and highlighting Lao culture and traditional patterns. According to Madame Taykeo Sayavongkhamdy, the exhibition displays more than 200 pieces of authentic woven textiles from all over Laos and some more than 200 years old. STORY: More than 200 pieces of authentic woven textiles from all over Laos, some more than 200 years old, are part of an exhibition taking place at La Maison de la Culture de Ban Naxay on Sisangvone Road in Naxay village, Xaysettha district.
The exhibition titled Tissage Traditionnel’ is presented by a local collector Madame Taykeo Sayavongkhamdy who loves textiles and has collected them from around the country over many years.
The exhibition aims to present her special collection and promote authentic woven textiles as well as raise public awareness about the importance of silk.
This is her first solo exhibition in Vientiane features beautiful textiles highlighting Lao culture and traditional patterns. The items comprise traditional dress, scarves, wall hangings, and so on. There are also some paintings featuring traditional costumes and culture on display.

Madame Taykeo has been collecting items for a long time and first fell in love with textiles on sale in LuangPrabang and Vientiane many years ago and since then has built up her collection with her husband. This passion led her to establish the Taykeo Textiles Gallery in 1990.
She has displayed her collection at event s in Santa Se, USA; Tokyo, Kyoto and Aichi in Japan; the Milano Expo in Italy, and Indonesia, Thailand and other countries.

Accordingly, her customers come from many countries such as the USA, Japan, Australia, France and Asean countries and are made up of collectors for museums and private collections, and art lovers.
The collection of woven masterpieces number at least 400 totals, which displays the preservation and care of these textiles and she wants to revive this traditional art of weaving that is based on ancient techniques, patterning and natural dying.
Entry is free and the exhibition runs until October 23.

Weaving in Laos is a very old tradition that gets threatened more and more now that cheap factory-made products take over the markets in Laos. In the Lao textile museum in Vientiane you can discover and experience this artistic craftsmanship.

Boat Racing Festival on the Mekong River at Ban Chomcheng in Vientiane, Laos. Although we arrived later in the afternoon and barely witnessed the boat race, we still had a blast walking around and checking things out and eating. We especially enjoyed the bahng khao lahm (coconut rice in bamboo sticks).
We definitely had a great time hanging out at my cousin's house by the Mekong. Great food and wonderful company, and we loved watching an old school Lao singer perform classic tunes.

We visited Heuan Puang Champa, a center for Lao traditional arts, in Luang Prabang, Laos and were given a tour of Lao textiles and antiques by our gracious hosts. Amanda and Souriya, who love Lao textiles (especially Lao sinh aka skirts) were in textile/sinh heaven in this episode. :)
We enjoyed reconnected with old friends at Heuan Puang Champa. The house is over 100 years old and being there makes you feel like going back in time. Good work is being done at this place to preserve and promote Lao traditional arts.

Spirits in the Loom: Religion and Design in Lao-Tai Textiles
The intriguing Lao-Tai textiles in this exhibition were collected by Professor Ellison Banks Findly in northeastern Laos. These textiles, produced by Tai weavers, reflect religious and spiritual beliefs, incorporating Buddhist and Hindu mythology and shamanistic practices. Findly’s extensive research illuminates how women in these communities interpret the significance of the images, designs and materials in the textiles they produce and use.

Taykeo Textile Gallery Weavers in Vientiane, Laos
This video was taken about three years ago when Taykeo had some of the best weavers working for. We're a little biased because the first weaver you see in this video is Bai's sister Bouasai. She wover for Taykeo part-time while she was attending the university. She graduated over a year ago and now works at another job, but still helps us out in managing our business interests in Vientiane. In this video you can see some very complex weaving and with one weaver you can see her picking out a pattern by looking at an antique textile. All the silk you see has been naturally-dyed and the colors Taykeo chooses for her textiles are simply gorgeous.

INTRO: A special fashion show promoting traditional Lao costumes titled Lao Grand Fashion Show 2016' took place at Lao-ITECC, attracting a large number of fashion fans.
STORY: The event was organised alongside the Lao Handicraft Festival (which opened in October under the auspices of the Lao Handicraft's Association), aiming to promote Lao traditional costumes and their preservation, as well as marking the celebration of the festival and promoting traditional products.
The event was chaired by Madame Naly Sisoulith (the wife of Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith), who also delivered the opening address, and attended by a number of government officials and Lao and foreign audience members.
Madame Naly said, “I am very pleased to chair this special and meaningful event. As we know, every country and ethnic group in the world has their own indentifying culture and traditions in terms of dressing. So, all Lao people are proud that we have our identifying costumes which are different from other countries and we are still able to preserve these traditions very well”
Madame Naly Sisoulith (the wife of Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith) also expressed her impressions on attending the event, explained about the long history of Lao traditional costumes and the importance of their promotion and preservation.
Finally, she called on the textile weavers and gold and silver smiths to continue to preserve their fine traditions and crafts before wishing the audience a great evening and the event every success.
She said adding, So, now it is the right time to present them to people around the world, then they will know more about identifying the beauty and clean lines of Lao costumes, especially for Lao women who dress in silk Sinhs with sashes on their shoulders.
The event featured a variety of beautiful and colourful traditional costumes made from both silk and cotton presented by 14 popular handicraft shops.
Those featuring traditional fashion costumes at Friday's event included Luangphatsalaphanh, Khmu Handicraft, Kheuamay Handicraft, Fawathana Co.,Ltd., Your Silk, Maykham Handicraft, Khang, Taykeo Textile Gallery, Thida Craft, Phouvong Jewelry, AVIVA Jewelry, Nikone Handicraft, Lao Cotton State Enterprise, and Fenerai Suit.
