Parking restrictions announced for Plaza fireworks
ALBANY -- On Thursday, crews were setting up for the Fourth of July Fireworks show in Albany put on by Price Chopper and the State Office of General Services.
The bright lights, against the Albany skyline remind Robert Landy of his childhood.
Once again I'm back here in Albany just to see it with my son, said Landy, who is now from Virginia.
Landy said he remembers watching the fireworks, at times, from the museum steps, which is a traditional spot for some. This year, because of construction, the set up will be different.
We turned everything around this year. We're doing a little construction on the museum stairs, so those won't be available for seating this year, said Heather Groll, from the New York State Office of General Services.
Groll said the footprint is just about the same size. She said the stage will be in front of the Capitol and she suggested people bring chairs to set up.
We have plenty of room for everybody here at the Plaza and as you know people often sit across the river, they sit in Lincoln Park, they sit in the parks right outside the Plaza, she said.
With a nationwide focus on security this Fourth of July, Groll said safety is always a focus.
People can be assured there will be a robust law enforcement presence here both in uniform and those who are not, said Groll.
Leading up to the show, firework crews were already setting up.
We beefed up the finale this year we have over 2,000 shells just for the finale alone, said John Flanagan, Shop Manager for Santore Fireworks.
It's a grand way for us to honor and pay tribute to our freedom and also the people who have fought for our freedom, said Pam Cerrone, Manager of Community Relations for Price Chopper.
Landy told CBS6 News that he feels that. He is a veteran himself.
The greatest thing about the Fourth of July here in the Albany area is it holds a great deal of value and people respect that. And that's what we hope to get this time, he said.
OGS also said the outside alcohol, hard coolers and pets are not allowed. Soft coolers are fine.
Officials announced a number of parking restrictions for the 4th of July fireworks at Empire State Plaza:
Noon July 3 1PM July 5
-- State Street, both sides, from S. Swan Street to Eagle Street
6AM July 4 6AM July 5

This includes the roadway adjacent to TOAST School and near the tennis courts, basketball courts and spray pool (Sunshine School)
July 4: 12:01AM 11:59PM
-- Madison Place, north side from Eagle Street to Philip Street
-- Elm Street, north side from Eagle Street to Grand Street
-- Philip Street, east side from Madison Avenue to Warren Street

July 4: 5:00AM 11:59PM

SUMMARY
=======
Albany ( (listen) ALL-bə-nee) is the capital of the U.S. state of New York and the seat of Albany County. Albany is located on the west bank of the Hudson River approximately 10 miles (16 km) south of its confluence with the Mohawk River and approximately 150 miles (240 km) north of New York City.
Albany is known for its rich history, commerce, culture, architecture, and institutions of higher education. Albany constitutes the economic and cultural core of the Capital District of New York State, which comprises the Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area, including the nearby cities and suburbs of Troy, Schenectady, and Saratoga Springs. With a 2013 Census-estimated population of 1.1 million the Capital District is the third-most populous metropolitan region in the state. As of the 2010 census, the population of Albany was 97,856.
The area that later became Albany was settled by Dutch colonists who in 1614, built Fort Nassau for fur trading and, in 1624, built Fort Orange. In 1664, the English took over the Dutch settlements, renaming the city as Albany, in honor of the then Duke of Albany, the future James II of England and James VII of Scotland. The city was officially chartered in 1686 under English rule. It became the capital of New York in 1797 following formation of the United States. Albany is one of the oldest surviving settlements of the original British thirteen colonies, and is the longest continuously chartered city in the United States.During the late 18th century and throughout most of the 19th, Albany was a center of trade and transportation. The city lies toward the north end of the navigable Hudson River, was the original eastern terminus of the Erie Canal connecting to the Great Lakes, and was home to some of the earliest railroad systems in the world. In the 1920s, a powerful political machine controlled by the Democratic Party arose in Albany. In the latter part of the 20th century, Albany experienced a decline in its population due to urban sprawl and suburbanization; however, the New York State Legislature approved a $234 million building and renovation plan for the City in the 1990s that spurred renovation and building projects around the downtown area. In the early 21st century, Albany has experienced growth in the high-technology industry, with great strides in the nanotechnology sector.
