Of the remaining acres, approximately 200 acres (81 ha) are occupied by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; other facilities above the main campus include the Lawrence Hall of Science and several research units, notably the Space Sciences Laboratory, the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, an undeveloped 800-acre (320 ha) ecological preserve, the University of California Botanical Garden and a recreation center in Strawberry Canyon. Portions of the mostly undeveloped, eastern area of the campus are actually within the City of Oakland; these portions extend from the Claremont Resort north through the Panoramic Hill neighborhood to Tilden Park.

Abstract:
The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) call for 5th grade students to “obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect Earth’s resources and environment”. Achieving this, and other objectives in NGSS, will require changes in the educational system for both students and teachers. Teachers need access to high quality instructional materials and continuous professional learning opportunities starting in pre-service education. Students need highly engaging and authentic learning experiences focused on content that is strategically interwoven with science practices. Pre-service and early career teachers, even at the secondary level, often have relatively weak understandings of the complex Earth systems science required for understanding climate change and hold alternative ideas and naïve beliefs about the nature of science. These naïve understandings cause difficulties in portraying and teaching science, especially considering what is being called for in NGSS. The ACLIPSE program focuses on middle school pre-service science teachers and education faculty because: (1) the concepts that underlie climate change align well with the disciplinary core ideas and practices in NGSS for middle grades; and (2) middle school is a critical time for capturing students interest in science as student engagement by eighth grade is the most effective predictor of student pursuit of science in high school and college. Capturing student attention at this age is critical for recruitment to STEM careers and lifelong climate literacy. THE ACLIPSE program uses cutting edge research and technology in ocean observing systems to provide educators with new tools to engage students that will lead to deeper understanding of the interactions between the ocean and climate systems. Establishing authentic, meaningful connections between indigenous and place-based, and technological climate observations will help generate a more holistic perspective on climate change and demonstrate that observing systems can enhance understanding. ACLIPSE materials strive to translate research about climate change effectively into understandable narratives of real world phenomena using ocean data, creating meaningful pathways into ocean-climate science for students in ALL communities.

A MATHEMATICAL GENIUS WHO PREDICTED ORDERING PHENOMENA
David Thouless was the brilliant theoretical physicist who was awarded one-third of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics, along with Duncan Haldane and Michael Kosterlitz, for his work on topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter. Using the concepts of topology, a branch of mathematics, he described phase transitions in thin layers at low temperatures and stepwise shifts of electrical conductivity in thin layers. These concepts can be employed for applications in electronics including making computing more energy efficient.
David James Thouless FRS[2] (/ˈθaʊlɛs/; 21 September 1934 – 6 April 2019[5][6][7]) was a British condensed-matter physicist.[8] He was the winner of the 1990 Wolf Prize and a laureate of the 2016 Nobel Prize for physics along with F. Duncan M. Haldane and J. Michael Kosterlitz for theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter.
Born in Bearsden, Scotland,[10] Thouless was educated at Winchester College and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge as an undergraduate student of Trinity Hall, Cambridge.[1] He obtained his PhD at Cornell University,[5][11] where Hans Bethe was his doctoral advisor.
Thouless was a postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, and also worked in the physics department, from 1958 to 1959.[13][14] He was the first director of studies in physics at Churchill College, Cambridge, in 1961–1965, professor of mathematical physics at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom in 1965–1978,[15] and professor of applied science at Yale University from 1979 to 1980,[14] before becoming a professor of physics at the University of Washington[16] in Seattle in 1980.[15] Thouless made many theoretical contributions to the understanding of extended systems of atoms and electrons, and of nucleons.[17][18][19] He also worked on superconductivity phenomena, properties of nuclear matter, and excited collective motions within nuclei.[17][18][19]
Thouless made many important contributions to the theory of many-body problems.[19] For atomic nuclei, he cleared up the concept of 'rearrangement energy' and derived an expression for the moment of inertia of deformed nuclei.[19] In statistical mechanics, he contributed many ideas to the understanding of ordering, including the concept of 'topological ordering'.[19] Other important results relate to localised electron states in disordered lattices.
