Le Suquet - The Old Quarter of Cannes
Le Suquet is the old quarter of Cannes, probably best known to tourists as the climbing, winding cobbled lane lined with local restaurants, Rue St Antoine. Le Suquet contains a clock tower and church that sit highfacing east overlooking the Bay of Cannes and Cannes itself. At the bottom of Le Suquet on Rue Dr. P. Gazagnaire is the Marché Forville, where the market is held in the mornings and early afternoon.
This area is the original fishermans' residential area of Cannes. The houses are all very old. The streets were laid out at least 400 years ago. It is a 5-minute walk from the beach and is full of restaurants around the Rue Saint Antoine and the Rue du Suquet. A lot of the area is pedestrianised and is a major tourist attraction for visitors to Cannes. The rue du Suquet is the original main road into Cannes. It came in below the walls of the castle (very good for defence). Ironically it is a pedestrian street again but full of good quality gourmet restaurants. Le Suquet is the narrowest street which is very steep and cobbled stoned, so be careful what footwear you choose! It's very trendy and lined with loads and loads and different style restaurants from which to choose, outside of which their staff often stand to entice you into their eateries It's not at all pushy, and just saying a polite non merci is enough! You will find something up your street, if you'll excuse the terrible pun! The narrow streets of Le Suquet allow you to rest from the glamour of la Croisette and hustle and bustle of stores on Rue d'Antibes and Rue Meynadier.

Exploring more of Cannes, France (Le Suquet Area)
Jamey Iris is exploring more of Cannes,France. They visited Le Sequet, one of the oldest neighbourood in Cannes and dates back to the Roman times. Jamey, Tiny and Ayan started at the iconic boulevard, La Croisette, headed west, passed the old port and went up the cobbled street of restaurant to reach this seemed hidden yet beautiful historical place.
Lu Sequet sits at the top of the hill overlooking what is now called Cannes.There was a rower built on top of the hill which is known as Musee dela Castre.
After 109+ steps to climb, Jamey and her friends really enjoyed the stunning view of the city and across the Bay of Cannes from the Chapel of Sainte-Anne. From the top, as visitors, the were greeted with a 360-degree panorama. That made their more than 100+ steps worth their while.

le #Suquet quartier typique de la vieille ville de #Cannes
( merci de noter la vidéo ) Le quartier du Suquet est le plus ancien de Cannes. Il se situe sur le mont Chevalier, autrement appelé le Suquet ce qui signifie « sommet » en provençal.La colline offre une vue sur la baie mais également sur les terres vers l'intérieur. Au XIéme siècle, les abbés du #Lérins prennent possession de la colline. Ils y construisent une citadelle. La tour du Suquet permet de guetter les envahisseurs et de prévenir la ville en cas d'attaque. Vous pouvez aujourd'hui y monter en visitant le musée de la Castre et profiter du panorama sur toute la baie. au XVéme siècle, le château est placé sous tutelle royale. Il est alors renforcé et transformé en musée des civilisations méditerranéennes et antiques, actuel musée de la Castre. Promenez-vous dans les rues de la vieille ville, profitez de la place ombragée à coté de l'église, visitez l'église et surtout admirez le magnifique panorama sur la baie. Pour accéder au quartier du Suquet prenez la rue Saint Antoine à partir de la Croisette, cette rue a perdu de son charme à cause des restaurants qui l'ont envahis mais le sommet de la colline est épargné.

Cannes a une âme, elle s'épanouit dans le quartier du Suquet. Comme tous les villages méditerranéens, Cannes fut bâtie sur une colline, qui fut le berceau de la ville, pour se préserver des grandes menaces de l'époque, pirates et sarrasins. Le Suquet, qui signifie tertre en provençal, se situe à l'ouest de la baie. Egalement appelé Mont-Chevalier, ce promontoire stratégique qui culmine à 66m était l'ancien Canoa des Ligures, peuple transalpin qui fut le premier à investir le site. Rien ne demeure de cette occupation. Le quartier du Suquet est piétonnier, héritage d'une configuration médiévale faite de ruelles pentues. De la rue du Mont-Chevalier jusqu'à la place du Suquet, savourez un itinéraire tortueux et pittoresque autour de la citadelle. Au Moyen-Âge, les moines de l'abbaye de Saint-Honorat édifient un château, autant corps défensif que lieu de culte. Autour du château se développe un castrum ou village fortifié. Aujourd’hui, ce qui reste du château médiéval des moines de Lérins abrite le Musée de la Castre. Le musée contient une importante collection d'antiquités du bassin méditerranéen, léguée à la ville par le baron Lycklama, aristocrate hollandais tombé amoureux de la petite cité balnéaire. Avant cette destinée culturelle, le site fut une manufacture de céramique à la fin du XIXème siècle. En contrebas du Suquet, le Vieux Port dont la plus ancienne partie, le « Quai St Pierre », accueille vieux gréements et yachts. En septembre, c’est de ce port que s’élancent les voiliers des Régates Royales.

Take a stroll through Cannes as you learn about its history. Accompanied by your guide, admire the old town of La Sequet and the famous Boulevard of La Croisette. You'll begin with a walk to the old part of the city built on the site of the former Canois Castrum, a Roman town dominated by a castle, on the slopes of Mont Chevalier. As you take Rue Perissol, the road ascends to Place de La Castre, surrounded by a defensive wall and dominated by the 16th-17th century Provencal Gothic style church, Notre Dame de L'Experance. The old bell tower leads you to a long tree lined terrace, offering a fine view of the town, harbor and Ile Ste. Marguerite.
Continue on Rue Meynardier, formerly the main street linking the new town with Le Suquet. It is lined with a variety of shops and some fine 18th century doorways. Pass by the old covered market on your way to the famous Rue d'Antibes, the main shopping street. As you return to the maritime terminal along the famous Boulevard de La Croisette, see where locals stroll in the winter, and how the elegant promenade is bordered by palm trees and gardens overlooking a fine sandy beach. Luxury hotels and elegant shops line the front and side streets along with galleries, antique shops, cinemas and night clubs. At the top end of La Croisette, east of the port, is the new Festival and Conference center; the last stop before heading back to your ship.
Note: Tour participation is limited. This tour is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. There are approximately 4 miles of walking over flat, uphill and cobblestoned terrain, with 25 steps to negotiate.
