The Palio di Legnano is an event that takes place every year in the last Sunday of May , in the Lombard town , to commemorate the victorious battle of Legnano, fought on 29 May 1176 by the armies of the Lombard League against the Emperor of Germany , Frederick Barbarossa. Before the Palio is held on the streets a historical parade consisting of more than 1,200 in costumes medieval, whose clothing, shields, etc.. closely reflect those of the twelfth century.

Battle of Legnano - 29 May 1176
Today we talk about the Battle of Legnano, one of the most important battles in Western Middle Ages. On May 29, 1176, near Milan, the army of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa was soundly defeated by the forces of the Lombard League, causing the failure of the German reconquest of Italy and the broader ambitions of the Holy Roman Empire to consolidate itself as a Mediterranean power.
In the video we want to trace al history of the battle, focusing in particular on the tactical progress of Italian Communal infantry during the Low Middle Ages. At Legnano, in fact, Lombard infantry, having remained isolated in open field against the enemy, managed to resist for hours around their carroccio against the repeated charges of the Imperial heavy cavalry. The day was eventually saved for the commoners by the providential action of Lombard cavalry, which routed the imperial army by charging it on its side.
Despite the reconfirmation of the primacy of the cavalry in the battle battle, the echo of Legnano in Western Europe was immense, as it proved how an infantry of commoners could have the moral strenght to stand its ground against feudal cavalry and to even pass at the counterattack against them. Although the dominance of heavy cavalry on the battlefield would have lasted again for more than a century, Legnano contributed to awaken the commoners of Europe from the political and psychological inferiority into which the nobility had relegated them and to speed up the development of Low Medieval infantries.
