Lehman Caves - Great Basin National Park
Lehman Caves is an incredible cave that is located within Great Basin National Park. Lehman Caves has history that dates back to late 1800's and early 1900's when it was first being explored after being discovered. Although Great Basin National Park is one of the lowest visited parks in the National park Service, it holds some of the greatest gems of all the parks. If it weren't so remote, visitation would probably be much higher.
If you haven't been able to see Lehman Caves, make the effort to plan a trip to go out an visit Great Basin. It's an incredibly beautiful park that has great hiking, and offers the chance to see an amazing cave that features formations not seen in many other caves.

Lehman Caves (a single cavern) extends a quarter-mile into the limestone and marble that flank the base of the Snake Range. American Indians knew of it long before the rancher and miner Absalom Lehman explored it in 1885. It is one of the region's most profusely decorated caves.
Due to time restraints, Yoly and I chose to take the kiddie tour where we were part of a large group of children and I thought that the ranger tour guide did a good job of making it interesting for everyone. Groups are limited in number so advanced reservations are recommended.

What is the Great Basin?
Defining the Great Basin begins with a choice: are you looking at the way the water flows (hydrographic), the way the landscape formed (geologic), or the resident plants and animals (biologic)? Each of these definitions will give you a slightly different geographic boundary of the Great Basin, but the hydrographic definition is the most commonly used.
The Hydrographic Great Basin is a 200,000 square mile area that drains internally. All precipitation in the region evaporates, sinks underground or flows into lakes (mostly saline). Creeks, streams, or rivers find no outlet to either the Gulf of Mexico or the Pacific Ocean. The region is bounded by the Wasatch Mountains to the east, the Sierra Nevada to the west, and the Snake River Plain to the north. The south rim is less distinct. The Great Basin includes most of Nevada, half of Utah, and sections of Idaho, Wyoming, Oregon, and California. The term Great Basin is slightly misleading; the region is actually made up of many small basins. The Great Salt Lake, Pyramid Lake, and the Humboldt Sink are a few of the drains in the Great Basin.
The Basin and Range region is the product of geological forces stretching the earth's crust, creating many north-south trending mountain ranges. These ranges are separated by flat valleys or basins. These hundreds of ranges make Nevada the most mountainous state in the country.
The Great Basin Desert is defined by plant and animal communities. The climate is affected by the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Mountains. It is a temperate desert with hot, dry summers and snowy winters. The valleys are dominated by sagebrush and shadescale. The biologic communities on the mountain ranges differ with elevation, and the individual ranges act as islands isolated by seas of desert vegetation. Because the Great Basin exhibits such drastic elevation changes from its valleys to its peaks, the region supports an impressive diversity of species, from those adapted to the desert to those adapted to forest and alpine environments.

Lehman Cave Great Basin National Park
I went on the cave tour for $10. A prospector named Lehman settled in the area; he decided it was more profitable to start a ranch, and sell food to the other miners. There are still some fruit trees planted by Mr. Lehman at the visitor center, and you're free to pick any fruit. Anyways, Lehman one day stumbled upon the entrance to this cave, and being a miner, he was definitely equipped to explore it. He charged $1 to go down with a candle, and if you didn't re-emerge after 24 hours, he'd come and find you!

Lehman Caves, Great Basin National Park, Nevada
The National Park Service conducts regular tours through the Lehman Caves at the Great Basin National Park in eastern Nevada. I believe there are two types of tours - the difference being the total distance covered. In this case, I was on the longer tour for a total cost of $10.00 USD at the time.

We leave Snow Canyon State Park and head to Baker Nevada to explore the Great Basin National Park. While there we take a tour of the Lehman Caves. Tour tickets can be purchased at recreation.gov. They only allow 20 individuals a day into the caves.

Great Basin National Park is a United States National Park located in White Pine County in east-central Nevada, near the Utah border, established in 1986. It is most commonly accessed by way of Nevada State Route 488, which is connected to U.S. Routes 6 and 50 by Nevada State Route 487 via the small town of Baker, the closest settlement to the park.
The park derives its name from the Great Basin, the dry and mountainous region between the Sierra Nevada and the Wasatch Mountains. Topographically, this area is known as the Basin and Range Province. The park is located about 290 miles (470 km) north of Las Vegas and protects 77,180 acres (31,230 ha).
The park is notable for its groves of ancient bristlecone pines, the oldest known nonclonal organisms, and for the Lehman Caves at the base of 13,063-foot (3,982 m) Wheeler Peak. The peak is also home to Wheeler Peak Glacier, which is much further north than Mount Everest and the Himalaya glaciers, so is not the southernmost glacier in the Northern Hemisphere, despite claims to the contrary.
President Warren G. Harding created Lehman Caves National Monument by presidential proclamation on January 24, 1922. It was designated a national park on October 27, 1986. A number of developed campsites are within the park, as well as excellent back-country camping opportunities. Adjacent to Great Basin National Park lies the Highland Ridge Wilderness. These two protected areas provide contiguous wildlife habitat and protection to 227.8 square miles (590.0 km2) of eastern Nevada's basin lands.
The Lehman Cave system began forming around 550 million years ago (during the Cambrian), while it was still submerged in a relatively warm, shallow ocean. The caves are made up of a marble and limestone solution, for the most part, that forms the many cave decorations throughout the caverns.
The cave system became much deeper during the Pleistocene, when a prolonged and increased flow of water eroded through the cave's fracturing bedrock. Eventually, the water level dropped, leaving glare rooms and cavities in the rock, creating the depths of the Lehman Caves system.

The park has 12 trails ranging from 0.3 to 13.1 miles (0.48 to 21.08 km). Trails range from short nature trails at 6,825 feet (2,080 m) (Mountain View Nature Trail), to the Wheeler summit trail starting at 10,160 feet (3,097 m). The Wheeler Summit trail is quite strenuous, and the altitude presents significant hazards for unprepared or inexperienced hikers. Backcountry routes are occasionally maintained throughout the more remote southern portion of the park. A number of these trailheads are accessible by the road that terminates at the primitive Shoshone campground.

I made my way through the middle of Nevada in about 4 days.
One of my top bucket list items was to finally climb Notch Peak, with the 2nd highest pure vertical drop in the United States next to El Capitan!

Week 4 of our 52 week, 48 state adventure is in the books! This full time RV family of 4, with two kids, a pug and a chicken are traveling the USA. Our trip took us to the great state of Nevada to check out Great Basin National Park and Lake Tahoe. Along the way, we toured the Lehman Caves, took a dip in the freezing water of Tahoe and walked around the Tallac Historic Site.

Road Trip #16 Great Basin and Central Nevada
We had 1 travel day to get from Cedar Breaks National Monument in Utah (previous video) to Yosemite National Park in California (coming up next). We stopped at Great Basin National Park in eastern Nevada, and took a tour down into Lehman Caves. Then it was hours and hours on the Loneliest Highway in America across Nevada.

Great Basin National Park -- Adventure on America's Loneliest Road in Nevada
Great Basin National Park is a real stunner located on I50 -- America's Loneliest Road -- in Nevada's Basin and Range. The scenery ranges from the desert floor, to centuries old bristlecone pines, to pristine glacial lakes, to wonderful waterfalls, to a palatial glacial cirque, to towering mountaintops. The hikes vary from easy to strenuous. In fact, the Wheeler Peak hike looks easy until you're actually on the trail. After a mile, the surface becomes broken rock, then (at least when we were there in July) a little snow. The last mile of very sharp switchbacks take you straight up to the peak. The reward, as you'll see in this video, is enormously worth it, but it's best for people who are fit and can cope with the reduced oxygen at 13,159 feet. When you visit, absolutely set aside time for the Lehman Cave tour, too. The stalactites, stalagmites and shield formations rival the finest sculpture and the park service tour guides are cheery and knowledgable. Camping in Great Basin National Park was a thrill that we plan to repeat next summer and every time we find ourselves on America's Loneliest Road. Lehman Caves
On a recent camping vacation at Great Basin National Park we took a tour of the Lehman Caves. Lehman Caves is filled with stalactites, stalagmites, columns, draperies, flowstone, helectites, and very rare shield formations (they look like drums or jellyfish). Many years ago people were allowed to take souvenirs so that's why there's some broken structures in the photos. Music is Neptune by Gustav Holst as performed by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra.
