75 Anniversary of the Leningrad Blockade
Today, Saint Petersburg (former Leningrad) commemorates one of the most terrifying dates in its history: the beginning of the 872-day blockade by Nazi forces. Around 600,000-1,500 000 people didn't survive the blockade, dying from hunger, cold and diseases. The Soviet people showed real heroism and zest for life being able to withstand all the horrors until help finally came.

New Delhi: India and Russia have signed a pact to jointly build the last two units of the Kudankulam nuclear reactor. Making the announcement during his joint statement with President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the seven-decade India-Russia ties, which he said, has stood the test of time. PM Modi, who also addressed an elite group of Russian industry leaders, said defence should be a key area in Indo-Russian collaboration and the government had approved a policy to allow Indian companies to manufacture defence equipment with foreign players. The Prime Minister is on a three-day tour to St Petersburg, where he had bilateral meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his team.
Here are the Top 10 facts in this big story:
We've adopted a declaration that will link both nations' economic progress and will act as an important driver amidst global turmoil, PM Modi said in the joint statement with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
India and Russia signed five agreements after the bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin. PM Modi said trade with Russia - which currently stands at $7.8 billion - will be raised to $30 billion over the next five years.
In his address to the industry leaders in Russia, PM Modi said, Trade, commerce, innovation and engineering are of immense importance in this era. The Prime Minister is the Guest of Honour at this year's three-day Saint Petersburg Economic Forum -- Russia's answer to Davos.
The last two units of Kudankulam nuclear power plant will be built with Russian collaboration. Russian firm Atomstroyexport will work with India's Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd to build units 5 and 6, which will have a capacity to produce 1000 MW of electricity each.
Russia also reaffirmed its strong support to India's candidature for a permanent seat in the reformed UN Security Council and a membership in the Nuclear Supplier Group and other non-proliferation regimes.
India will become a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation - a five-nation political, economic, and military bloc - within a week, President Putin said. The SCO was founded in 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
India and Russia are looking to improve the declining trade ties and the unease triggered by shifting global alliances. A traditional ally of India, Russia has lately veered towards China and Pakistan.
In an interview to news agency Press Trust of India, President Putin said Russia does not have any tight military relationship with Pakistan, and asserted that its close friendship with India cannot be diluted.
PM Modi met Mr Putin at the sprawling Konstantin Palace, the Russian President's official residence. Later, President Putin will host PM Modi at a private dinner. He started the day by paying respects to the 500,000 Russians killed in Leningrad during World War II at the Piskaryovskoye cemetery.

BTR-50PUM
The BTR-50 (BTR stands for Bronetransporter (БТР, Бронетранспортер), literally armored transporter) is a Soviet amphibious armored personnel carrier (APC) based on the PT-76 light tank. The BTR-50 is tracked, unlike most in the BTR series, which are wheeled.
The BTR-50 was developed in 1952 and entered service with the Soviet Army in 1954. It was first shown in public in November 1957. It served in the motorized rifle regiments of tank divisions and mechanized brigades in the Soviet and East German armies.[1] A typical mechanized brigade consisted of three battalions, each of which had 30 APCs and a command vehicle. They were replaced in front line service by the BMP-1 IFV.
BTR-50PUM is Finnish varianet, upgraded BTR-50PU fitted with the equipment of the R-145BM (BTR-60 variant) and smoke grenade launchers, one NSVT 12.7 mm heavy machine gun and additional armor.
BTR-50PUM1 is Finnish variant, modernized PUM with western radio sets.
ZSU-57-2
The ZSU-57-2 Ob'yekt 500 is a Soviet self-propelled anti-aircraft gun (SPAAG), armed with two 57 mm autocannons. 'ZSU' stands for Zenitnaya Samokhodnaya Ustanovka (Russian: Зенитная Самоходная Установка), meaning anti-aircraft self-propelled mount, '57' stands for the bore of the armament in millimetres and '2' stands for the number of gun barrels. It was the first Soviet mass-produced tracked SPAAG. In the USSR it had the unofficial nickname Sparka, meaning twin mount, referring to the twin autocannon with which the vehicle is armed.
Based on past experiences with SPAAG designs, Soviet engineers designed a vehicle that used a modified T-54 chassis, with four twin road wheels per side instead of five, and much thinner armour. The vehicle was armed with twin 57 mm S-68 autocannon in a new, large, rotating, open-topped turret. The ZSU-57-2 consists of three compartments: driver's in the front, fighting in the middle and engine-transmission at the rear. The hull is more spacious in comparison with the T-54 because of the thinner armour and has different locations for some equipment. The general layout, with transverse mounting of the engine, is the same.
The twin S-68s are recoil-operated and weigh 4,500 kg. Their construction was based on two 57 mm S-60 AA autocannons. The guns have a recoil of between 325 and 370 mm. The individual weapons cannot be swapped from one side to the other as they are mirror images. Each air-cooled gun barrel is 4365 mm long (76.6 calibers) and is fitted with a muzzle brake.
The guns firing together are capable of firing up to 210–240 fragmentation and armour-piercing tracer (AP-T) shells per minute, with a practical rate of fire of between 100 and 140 rounds per minute.
T-34-85
Introduced in 1944 as a counter to the German Panther and Tiger 1, the T-34/85 was one of the best tanks to fight in World War II. Nearly 50,000 were built between 1944 and 1958 and it was produced in larger numbers than any other World War II tank.
The T34-85 mounted an S-53 85mm gun carried in a three-man turret.
Finnish use: Seven tanks were taken to Finnish use during Continuation War. First T-34/76 was taken to Finnish use in October of 1941. The last of these tanks remained in Finnish use until year 1961. The tanks were both captured in combat and brought from Germany.
Parola Armour Museum
Parola Tank Museum, Armoured Vehicle Museum is a military museum located 110 kilometres north of Helsinki in Parola, near Hämeenlinna, Finland, a few kilometres from the Finnish Army Armoured Brigade training unit. It displays various tanks, armoured vehicles and anti-tank guns used by the Finnish Defence Forces throughout their history. A rare exhibit is an armoured train used in World War II. The museum was opened on June 18, 1961, when there were 19 tanks and 12 anti-tank guns on display.

Russia/Moscow (Alexander Gardens) by night Part 8
Welcome to my travelchannel. On my channel you can find almost 1000 films of more than 70 countries.
See the playlist on my youtube channel.Enjoy!
Alexander Gardens (Russian: Александровский сад) was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow, Russia. The park comprises three separate gardens, which stretch along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for 865 metres (2,838 ft) between the building of the Moscow Manege and the Kremlin.
After the Napoleonic Wars, Tsar Alexander I ordered architect Osip Bove to reconstruct parts of the city which had been destroyed by French troops. Bove laid out a new garden from 1819-1823, on the site of the riverbed of the Neglinnaya River, which was channeled underground.
Upper Garden
Towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame brought from the Field of Mars in Leningrad. Created in 1967, it contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War at the kilometer 41 marker of Leningradskoe Shosse, the nearest point the forces of Nazi Germany penetrated towards Moscow. Post Number One, where the honor sentinels stand on guard, used to be located in front of Lenin's Mausoleum, but was moved to the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier in the 1990s. The middle section of the upper garden contains a faux ruined grotto built underneath the Middle Arsenal Tower. Although not constructed until 1841, this was part of Bove's original design. The garden's cast iron gate and grille were designed to commemorate the Russian victories over Napoleon, and its rocks are rubble from buildings destroyed during the French occupation of Moscow.
In front of the grotto is an obelisk erected on July 10 1914, a year after the tercentenary of the Romanov dynasty was celebrated. The monument made of granite from Finland listed all of the Romanov Tsars and had the coats of arms of the (Russian) provinces. Four years later, the dynasty was gone, and the Bolsheviks (per Lenin’s directive on Monumental propaganda) removed the imperial eagle, and re-carved the monument with a list of 19 socialist and communist philosophers and political leaders, personally approved by Lenin. Originally in the Lower Garden, it was relocated to its present location in 1966. There is discussion to remove Lenin's and reinstall an obelisk duplicating the original.
The wrought iron grille, enclosing this part of the garden, has a design of fasces, which are intended to commemorate the military victory over Napoleon.
The northern part of the garden is adjacent to the large underground shopping complex at Manege Square.
Middle Garden
The most prominent feature of the Middle Garden is the outlying Kutafya Tower of the Moscow Kremlin. There is an entrance to the park opposite the tower directly to the Moscow Metro system.
Lower Garden
Laid out in 1823, the Lower Garden stretches to the road leading to the Borovitskaya Tower, one of two vehicular and pedestrian entrances to the Kremlin.Wikipedia

St. Petersburg, Russia Flashback meets Park City Real Estate
The photos in this video were taken in November 1972. I was a student at the University of Copenhagen and was fortunate to have the opportunity to visit St. Petersburg and Moscow. Times have certainly changed!
St. Petersburg was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great and became the capital of Russia. It was often called the Venice of the North. The name St. Petersburg was changed to Petrograd in 1914 then to Leningrad in 1924 and back to St. Petersburg in 1991. The capital was moved to Moscow in 1918 as the result of the Revolution. On November 17, 1917 the Battle Cruiser Aurora fired a blank that signaled the storming of the Winter Palace and the start of the Revolution. Located on the Neva River, St. Petersburg has a number of famous landmarks including Peter and Paul Fortress and Cathedral, the Winter Palace, Palace Square, Alexander Column, Hermitage Museum, Pushkin Palace, Arts Square, Admiralty Building, Kazan Cathedral and Catherine the Great's Summer Palace. The buildings are decorated to celebrate the 1917 revolution. During World War II, the city withstood a 900 day siege from the advancing German army and survived.
Peter and Paul Fortress and Cathedral is the burial place of all of the Russian Emperors and Empresses from Peter the Great to Alexander lll, and the fortress held as inmates Dostoyevsky and Trotsky.
The Hermitage's collections include works by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian, a unique collection of Rembrandts and Rubens, many French Impressionist works by Renoir, Cezanne, Manet, Monet and Pissarro, numerous canvasses by Van Gogh, Matisse, Gaugin and several sculptures by Rodin.

*Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev (Russian: Дми́трий Анато́льевич Медве́дев); born 14 September 1965 is the tenth and current Prime Minister of Russia, incumbent since 2012. He previously served as the third President of Russia, from 2008 to 2012.
Born to a family of academics, Medvedev graduated from the Law Department of Leningrad State University in 1987. He defended his dissertation in 1990 and worked as a docent at his alma mater, now renamed to Saint Petersburg State University, where he taught civil and Roman law until 1999. Medvedev's political career began as the election campaign manager and later an adviser of St. Petersburg Mayor Anatoly Sobchak. During this time, Medvedev befriended Vladimir Putin. In November 1999, Medvedev was hired in the Russian presidential administration, where he worked as deputy chief of staff. In the 2000 Presidential elections, Medvedev was Putin's campaign manager. On 14 November 2005, Medvedev was appointed First Deputy Prime Minister and was tasked with overseeing National Priority Projects. He also worked as the Chairman of Gazprom's board of directors, a post which he held until 2008.
On 10 December 2007, Medvedev was informally endorsed as a candidate for the forthcoming presidential elections by four political parties: United Russia, Fair Russia, Agrarian Party of Russia and Civilian Power, and was officially endorsed by United Russia on 17 December 2007. Medvedev's candidacy was backed by the popular outgoing President Vladimir Putin, giving a significant boost to his popularity. The 2008 presidential election, held on 2 March 2008, was won by Medvedev with 70.28% of the popular vote, and he was inaugurated on 7 May 2008. Although he did not run for a second term as President, Medvedev was appointed Prime Minister by Putin, who won the 2012 presidential election. On 26 May 2012 he also was appointed officially as the Leader of United Russia Party.
Widely regarded as more liberal than his predecessor, Medvedev's top agenda as President was a wide-ranging modernisation programme, aiming at modernising Russia's economy and society, and lessening the country's reliance on oil and gas. During Medvedev's tenure, Russia emerged victorious in the 2008 South Ossetia war and recovered from the late-2000s recession. Recognising corruption as one of Russia's most severe problems, Medvedev has launched an anti-corruption campaign and initiated a substantial law enforcement reform. In foreign policy, his main achievements include the signing of the New START treaty, a reset of the Russia -- United States relations which were severely strained following Russia's war with Georgia, as well as increasing Russia's cooperation with the BRICS-countries, as well as the Russia's admission into the WTO in 2011.
