The Capri Collection has turned 70!
For this special anniversary of this world-famous fashion item with the legendary slit, the Museum TIM invites visitors on an exciting journey through time, back to the beginning of the fashionable career start of the Capri pants. The exhibition bends the bow from the studio of the young fashion designer Sonja de Lennart in Munich of the postwar time up to the first tourists waves over the Brenner Pass on Italian beaches in the 1950s and on to Hollywood.
The museum visitors can tour the fashion house of the post-war period, in which they will encounter numerous prominent Capri pants wearers. Several pieces from the first collection of Sonja de Lennart testify to the fashionable ideal and women images, along with hopes and dreams of that time and impressively convey the spirit of an entire generation.
The TIM took over the exhibition from the birthplace “Levi Strauss Museum in Buttenheim.

At the time Sonja de Lennart invented the Capri Pants, Capri wasn't the Island as we know it today. At that time, Capri had a very dark history. Capri was dominated by the Capri Mafia Camorra, the Catholic Pope, the Fascists, Mussolini and his Blackshirts, Censorship, Nazis, and, in addition to a landing U.S. Army, there was certainly no women anywhere on the Island hopping around in Capri Pants....there was not even a Capri Pant invented! In reality, the women of Capri were dressed in black, much like all women of the South of Italy....
Ahead of her time, with her daring creations at a time when the so-called average woman wore the military look, Sonja de Lennart initiated a cultural fashion revolution and changed the societal role of woman around the world forever...especially at a time when only actresses like Marlene Dietrich and Katherine Hepburn and other femme fatales wore man style pants. At a time, when men were forbidden to accompany a woman in pants in public (if they did, they would have been arrested in post war Germany); and when Catholic Schools forbade girls to wear pants, or when the Israelian singer, Esther Ofarim, as well as the wife of Mr. Townsend and the actress Senta Berger were forbidden to enter a hotel wearing pants [until the 1970s], or when the London Harrods threw women who wore pants out of Harrods, or when the German Parliament threatened to throw women out if they would appear in pants. Sonja de Lennart, as a rebellious young girl, was indignant—like so many women—that it was forbidden for women to wear pants. And, even though she loved Marlene Dietrich and her man-style pants, the style was simply impossible for Sonja with her petite 5 ft. 1 in./1.52 cm stature (which happens to be the same petite stature as Lady Gaga and Elizabeth Taylor).
Her first Capri pant creation was the Winter Style Capri pant (see photo of Austrian actress, Erni Mangold) that Sonja started creating before the end of WWII and which she perfected after her dramatic flight in Bavaria. Only later was the Summer Style added; then, when Sonja could indeed travel for the first time to Capri—taking her Capri Pants and wading through the water, which resulted in Sonja cutting the pants shorter as well as becoming a little bit tighter—the Summer Style was born (modeled by actress Mady Rahl).
Sonja de Lennart's cousin in Beverly Hills, movie producer, and friend of Gregory Peck brought the first American clientele to Sonja de Lennart and made her name well known in the movie circles of Hollywood. Soon after came major movie companies, prominent opera directors, costume designers, and notables from all over the world who traveled to Europe to acquire Sonja de Lennart's design. Among those were Ingrid Bergman, Gary Cooper, Maria Schell, Curd Jürgens, and Klaus Kinski as well as nobles like the Countess of Stauffenberg; the Woolworth heir, Sunny von Bülow; Princess Auersperg and Queen Soraya Esfandiary, the wife of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, The 5th Dimension, the actresses Mady Rahl, Erni Mangold, Maria Perschy, Margot Hielscher, Nadja Tiller, and many others.
The Capri collection (Capri Skirt, Capri Blouse, Capri Belt) was used by Paramount's head designer, Edith Head, for the Audrey Hepburn movie, Roman Holiday. Not only because of Sonja de Lennart's growing fame, but because Paramount had to use frozen (war) monies in Europe; thus, they used it for the production of a movie that had to be shot primarily on European locations, along with a European actress. In fact, it was the iconic Hepburn who ultimately made Sonja's creation world-famous—the stylish Capri pants, worn by Ms. Hepburn in the movie, were as if they were created exclusively with her in mind.
The Cult & Jeans Levi Strauss Museum (awarded the European Museum of the Year Award) opened the Exhibition about the lifework of Sonja de Lennart, the inventor of the Capri Pants. The Exhibition is named, Short, Saucy, and Cult - Sonja de Lennart and the Capri Pants. The Opening Event took place on March 11, 2014, in Buttenheim.
Historical Facts and Correction of Libeling Circulations
Boutique shop owners on the Island of Capri initiated a group called, Capri Excellence, invented a story in order to change historical facts. Now it was no longer Pucci who was inaccurately credited, but now it should be the 17 Century Culotte men pants. Director, Dr. Roppelt, of the famous Cult & Jeans Levi Strauss Museum stated: ...this is ridiculous, neither culottes nor Putipù dancer pants or Fisherman pants are Capri Pants.
1. In the meantime, the lawyer apologized on the behalf of Ms Settani (owner of La Parisienne) and their Association for this absurd story and confirmed that they will never libel the inventor of the Capri Pants and assassinate Sonja de Lennart's character again. 2. Also, Emilio Pucci's company confirmed toward New York Times that Pucci has falsely been credited in regard to Sonja de Lennart's accomplishment.
