RC Big Ship - Jeremiah O'Brien - Liberty Ship from World War II
SS Jeremiah O'Brien is a Liberty ship built during World War II and named for American Revolutionary War ship captain Jeremiah O'Brien (1744--1818). Now based in San Francisco, the O'Brien is a rare survivor of the 6,939-ship armada[3] that stormed Normandy on D-Day, 1944,[4][5] and one of only two currently operational WWII Liberty ships afloat of the 2,710 built during the war (the other being the SS John W. Brown based in Baltimore).

[edit] History
Built in just 56 days at the New England Shipbuilding Corporation in South Portland, Maine, and launched on 19 June 1943, this class EC2-S-CI ship not only made four perilous round trip wartime crossings of the Atlantic and served on D-Day, the vessel later saw sixteen months of service in both the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean calling at ports in Chile, Peru, New Guinea, the Philippines, India, China, and Australia.
The end of the war caused most of the Liberty ships to be removed from service in 1946 and many were subsequently sold to foreign and domestic buyers. Others were retained by the U.S. Maritime Commission for potential reactivation in the event of future military conflicts. The O'Brien was mothballed and remained in the National Defense Reserve Fleet in Suisun Bay for 33 years. In the 1970's, however, the idea of preserving an unaltered Liberty Ship began to be developed and, under the sponsorship of Rear Admiral Thomas J. Patterson, USMS, (then the Western Regional Director of the U.S. Maritime Administration) the ship was put aside for preservation instead of being sold for scrap. In a 1994 interview printed by the Vintage Preservation magazine Old Glory, Patterson is alledged to have claimed the ship was steamed to her anchorage in the mothball fleet (unlike the many that were secured as unservicable and towed into storage), and frequently placed at the back of the list for disposal, which undoubtedly contributed to her survival.
Possession of the O'Brien was taken in 1979 by the National Liberty Ship Memorial, an all volunteer group, to be restored; at which point she was virtually the last Liberty at the anchorage. Amazingly, those who volunteered to resurrect the mothballed ship were able to get the antiquated steam plant operating while the vessel remained in Suisun Bay, and after more than three decades of sitting in rusting idleness, the O'Brien's boilers were lit; and on 21 May 1980, the ship left the mothball fleet -- the only similar vessel ever to do so under her own power[citation needed] -- for San Francisco Bay, drydocking, and thousands of more hours of restoration work. The ship then moved to Fort Mason, on the San Francisco waterfront just to the west of Fisherman's wharf. There the O'Brien became a floating museum dedicated to the men and women who built and sailed the ships of United States Merchant Marine in WWII. Licenced to carry tours around San Fransico bay, it was suggested that the ship be restored to ocean going specification, and after efforts in securing sponsorship this was accomplished in time for the 50th D-Day Anniversary Celebrations in 1994. The ship makes several passenger-carrying daylight cruises each year in the San Francisco Bay Area, and occasional voyages to more distant ports such as Seattle and San Diego.
Footage of the ship's engines was used in the 1997 film Titanic to depict the ill-fated ship's own engines.

Building the Liberty Ships During World War II -- Birth of Victory 1945
The Kaiser Shipyards were seven major shipbuilding yards located on the United States west coast during World War II. Kaiser ranked 20th among U.S. corporations in the value of wartime production contracts.[1] The shipyards were owned by the Kaiser Shipbuilding Company, a creation of American industrialist Henry J. Kaiser, who established the shipbuilding company around 1939 in order to help meet the construction goals set by the United States Maritime Commission for merchant shipping.
Four of the Kaiser Shipyards were located in Richmond and were called the Richmond Shipyards. Together, these four Kaiser Shipyards produced 747 ships, including many of the famous Liberty ships and Victory ships—more than any other complex in the United States. Only one of these ships, the SS Red Oak Victory, survives. Kaiser also produced the Casablanca-class escort carriers.
Three other shipyards were located across the Columbia River from each other at Ryan Point in Vancouver, Washington and in the St. Johns area of Portland, Oregon as part of the Oregon Shipbuilding Corporation group, and at Swan Island in Portland.[2]
Henry Kaiser was known for developing new methods of ship building, which allowed his yards to outproduce other similar facilities and build 1,490 ships, 27 percent of the total Maritime Commission construction. Kaiser's ships were completed in two-thirds the time and a quarter the cost of the average of all other shipyards. Liberty ships were typically assembled in a little over two weeks, and one in less than five days.[3]
Kaiser Shipyards shut down at the end of the war. The Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park was dedicated October 25, 2000 on the site of one of the shipyards in Point Richmond.
enry Kaiser had been building cargo ships for the Maritime Commission in the 1930s, partnering with Todd Pacific Shipyards and the Bath Iron Works. When orders for ships from the British government, already at war with Germany, allowed for growth, Kaiser established his first Richmond shipyard begun in December 1940.[4]
In April 1941 the Maritime Commission requested an additional Kaiser yard, to be used for Liberty ship construction, and after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Kaiser started third and fourth yards, building troop transports and tank landing ships (LSTs), respectively. His son, Edgar Kaiser, Sr was appointed Vice-President and General Manager of the shipyards.
Kaiser set several records:
The Liberty ship SS Robert E. Peary was assembled in less than five days as a part of a special competition among shipyards.
At the Oregon Shipbuilding Yard on the Columbia River, near Portland, the Victory ship SS Joseph N. Teal was built in ten days in fall 1942.
The Oregon Shipbuilding Yards were responsible for 455 ships.
Kaiser recruited from across the United States to work in his yards, hiring women and minorities.

USS Portland (LPD 27) Commissioning Ceremony
The Navy commissioned its newest amphibious transport dock ship, USS Portland (LPD 27), April 21 at the Port of Portland, Marine Terminal 2 in Portland, Oregon.
The future Portland is the 11th San Antonio-class ship. These ships are designed to support embarking, transporting, and landing elements of more than 800 Marines with both a flight deck, which accommodates CH-53E Sea Stallion, and MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft, and a well deck, which can launch and recover landing craft and amphibious vehicles.
San Antonio-class ships are versatile players in maritime security with the ability to support a variety of amphibious assault, special operations or expeditionary warfare missions, operating independently or as part of amphibious ready groups, expeditionary strike groups, or joint task forces. In addition to performing their primary mission, San Antonio-class ships have conducted anti-piracy operations, provided humanitarian assistance and supported foreign disaster relief operations around the world.

I headed to Bourbon Street in Downtown immediately upon arrival. Just today because this Halloween festivities. Already in the early evening, but the street is not enough because phosphoric acid is to break dineul people came to enjoy the festival. Super hero, Al Capone, cartoon characters, all the characters of the world seems to have everything gathered. The street performances by two starts is also one of the places in the city like a musical. The people in the street will start shaking your body in line with the music. As such festival is the best opportunity you can also showcase their talents in front of all-you-can given rise to many popular performers of the street. This costume seems to attract the attention of toxic people. Just the traditional costumes of the Indians who lived on the Mississippi River downstream or chess. Now it seems that you can see as much as Indians but disappeared in Halloween festivities. I feel like a neon sign in the distance are the best props for Halloween festivities. The degree to start the night drew on deep colorful street parade was not visible that end. In the old days the Celts of Europe do indeed surprising that only a small customs around the world enjoy now, Halloween festival to appease the souls of the dead. I met an elderly couple who spend time in this special place. Halloween in New Orleans everyone a chance to relax and forget about the present. While my wife tells me that says one-year opportunity to spend a fun time just forgot who received breast cancer treatment. Who will play whether totally forgot where I am. The first night in New Orleans flows do with Halloween festivities.

Holiday Salute 2019: A Tribute to Our Armed Forces
It's our station's annual tradition that recognizes service members and military families across Hampton Roads: the 34th Annual Holiday Salute!
With this year's edition, Mike Gooding takes an in-depth look at Newport News Shipbuilding’s holiday gift to the nation: the new aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy. Additionally, he'll visit with the Naval Station Norfolk-based Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 28, the Dragon Whales, who are deploying this Christmas season. Plus, Mike will introduce us to the non-profit community organization Troopster, which is sending more than 1,000 care packages to the USS Abraham Lincoln this year.
Nicole Livas will bring us the story of the Tegna Foundation, a charitable giving division of 13News Now’s parent company. The Foundation picked two worthy Hampton Roads organizations to receive major grants because of the great work they do with military families: Comfort Crew and the Military Child Education Coalition.
Finally, Philip Townsend takes a look back through the 34-year history of Holiday Salute, bringing back clips from the past, and -- most notably -- bringing back a very special guest: the founder and creator of Holiday Salute, former 13News Now reporter Joe Flanagan!
