Kinetic Edinburgh II .mp4
to see a preview of my new work go here:
Short video of Edinburgh in winter produced by Walid Salhab, Lecturer in Media Practice, Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh.
Following the international interest generated by Kinetic Edinburgh I, Walid decided to further trial his time lapse/top motion techniques in another short film which celebrates the beauty of Edinburgh during the festive season.
Kinetic Edinburgh II showcases many interesting areas of Edinburgh and allows the viewer to see these locations through fresh eyes. The film moves from the magnificence of the Dome encased in its illuminated decorations to the coolness of Portobello promenade, and from dusk at Granton Harbour to the lights of the big wheel and the carousel at Winter Wonderland.
Kinetic Edinburgh is made up of a minimum of 10,000 individual photos all pieced together to create the illusion of movement.
Walid has used Kinetic Edinburgh II as part of his own-going research in practical media. The knowledge and skills he has acquired as part of this process are being fed into his teaching. The film is also helping him develop techniques that will be used in his up and coming short film 'Avaritia'. The trailer for 'Avaritia' will be released very soon.
Kinetic Edinburgh is Walid's Christmas present to the residents of Edinburgh and to all the people around the world who love the city.

Cockenzie Chimney Demolition - HD Drone Footage - ScottishPower
Cockenzie's iconic chimneys were demolished by controlled explosion on Saturday 26th September changing the skyline around East Lothian and the Forth forever.
We captured the moments leading up to the button press, speaking to former workers at the station and local residents before the chimneys were brought together for the first and last time.
Originally operational in the summer of 1967, Cockenzie was officially opened on the 24th May 1968 by the Secretary of State for Scotland, The Rt. Hon. William Ross. The Power Station generated more than 150 Terawatt Hours (TWh) of electricity in its lifetime, enough to power the average annual electricity needs of more than 1 million homes every year during its 45 years of operation. In total, it is estimated that more than 10,000 people have been employed at Cockenzie, during construction and operation, with many thousands of other jobs supported in the wider supply chain and local area.
When Cockenzie opened in 1967, it was the largest power station in Scotland and Britain was still 2 years away from natural gas being used in electricity generation. Coal accounted for approximately 72% of the fuel input used for electricity generation in Britain, compared to approximately 20.5% in 2014.
In an average year the station would receive approximately 800 train loads of coal, meaning that up to 36,000 freight trains stopped at Cockenzie’s coal handling plant to make deliveries over the lifetime of the station. The last delivery took place at 3pm on Saturday 9th March.
Designed by Sir Robert Matthew (who also designed Edinburgh Airport and the Royal Commonwealth Pool), and famous for its distinctive twin chimney stacks, the station was built with a generating capacity of 1,200MW, comprising four identical units, each capable of generating 300MW. Due to strategic investment and high levels of maintenance, the station comfortably outlived its original estimates of a 25-30 year life cycle.

Edinburgh Cycle Lanes Top 10: No.4
A rundown of the 'top' 10 cycle lanes in Edinburgh, UK.
Just a very basic example of what is wrong with so many of the cycle lanes of the UK, so not just an Edinburgh problem. The lanes aren't in any way protected, so often end up parked in (the hashed lines marking out this one means it is not mandatory for traffic to stay out of it - mind you, the traffic is also ignoring double yellow lines).
This particular lane combines a constant parking problem with and awful patched up and worn surface. A joy to cycle on...
Edinburgh - Time lapse Part 1
