North West India: Rajasthan part 2 (Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Kumbalgarth and Pushkar (fair)
Part 2:
North India, a videoreport of our journey through Rajasthan. The most colourful state of India.
Jaisalmer: The walled city as a whole is a landmark with its many beautifully carved facades, narrow, winding streets and intimate bazaars. The fort is one of the oldest and largest of Rajasthan. Moreover, it is inhabited, what a journey through this medieval neighborhood is an experience like in a thousand and one nights.
Six kilometers north of the city lie the cenotaphs, monuments of the cremation of the maharajas.Mandawa. It is a very nice town. Time seems to have stopped here.
In the Thar desert we visit a little village and meet a old musician who play two flutes simultaneous.
Jodhpur, also known as the blue city. From the fort, you can clearly see why Jodhpur has been nicknamed the 'blue city', many houses are painted blue. The color blue actually means that the house is owned by a Brahmin; a person of a higher 'caste', or class. Nowadays everyone in Jodhpur may paint his house blue. The color blue would repel insects.
Kumbhalgarh Fort is a Mewar fortress on the westerly range of Aravalli Hills. Less known and visited then other fortresses in Rajasthan but very interesting. It is a World Heritage Site included in Hill Forts of Rajasthan. Built during the course of the 15th century by Rana Kumbha and enlarged through the 19th century.
In the environment of Kumbhalgarh we visit a small rural village; a unique opportunity to meet locals and smoke the pipe with them.
We end this part of our video report in Pushkar. What to say about Pushkar. Each year in the month of Karthik, a spectacular 10-day fair called the Pushkar Fair is organized in the desert town of Pushkar. During this time huge numbers of camels, horses, cows, goats and sheep collect here and then are then traded by their owners. With the sudden appearance of these hundreds of men, women and animals in the otherwise quiet town of Pushkar, the desert seems to come alive and becomes filled with colour, music, laughter and enjoyment. Men can be seen wearing their vibrant traditional turbans that are an integral part of their attire and the women are equally decked up from head to toe in their multi-coloured lehengas with glittering bangles, necklaces, silver waistbands, anklets, and flamboyant chunnis.

Border 1997 | Block Buster Hit Hindi Movie | Sunny Deol | Sunil Shetty | Akshaye Khanna
Border 1997, All time Hit Bollywood movie,
The film opens before the declaration of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. At a forward operating airbase, Indian Air Force Wing Commander Anand Andy Bajwa, setting his stopwatch, waits for the air raid siren to go. As the siren goes, he sprints towards his MiG-21, armed, fuelled and ready for takeoff. Bajwa and his air force wingmen soon take off to an unknown airbase in Rajasthan. Once there, he is briefed by his superior that he and his squadron are assigned to the Jaisalmer sector and have to fly the outdated Hawker Hunter Ground attack planes (with no night vision capabilities) to support the Indian Army. He is soon joined by his brother-in-arms army Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri (played by Sunny Deol) as they meet on a courier flight and speak about the possibility of the opening of the Western front in light of the East Pakistan conflict. Kuldip takes up command of a company of the 23rd Battalion Punjab Regiment, arguing the light defence being assigned to the military post of Longewala. He meets his second-in-command 2nd Lieutenant Dharamveer Bhan (Akshaye Khanna) (who happens to be the son of a 1965 Indo-Pakistani War veteran who was killed during that war) and the Company JCO Naib Subedar Mathura Das (Sudesh Berry). The company moves to a remote outpost in the deserts of Rajasthan and begin to expand the rudimentary Border Security Force (BSF) post and does observation of the area up to the international border with Pakistan. They meet the post's BSF commandant Bhairon Singh (Sunil Shetty), a deeply patriotic man who expresses his love for the desert.
During a night patrol, Kuldip, Dharamveer and Bhairon Singh come across a suspicious bunch of locals who turn out to be insurgents having informed the identities of the company to the Pakistani military. The trio get into a brief firefight killing all but one of the insurgents when Dharamveer hesitates to shoot the surviving insurgent, as he has never killed anyone. Kuldip severely derides him and shoots the insurgent himself, prompting Dharamveer to vomit. A badly shaken Dharamvir is comforted by Bhairon Singh and the two reminisce about their personal lives. Dharamveer recounts how he met his fiancée Kamla (Pooja Bhatt), a lively girl from his native village whom he had fallen for and how he got his mobilization orders on the day of his engagement to Kamla. Bhairon Singh recounts his wedding night, his first night with his bride (played by Sharbani Mukherjee), when he was called back to post and how he bids a tearful goodbye to his newly-wed wife Phool Kanwar.
The unit is joined by the charismatic Subedar Ratan Singh (Puneet Issar), a man of insatiable appetite and wit, with two 106mm jeep-mounted RCL guns to serve as an anti-armour unit. The company wireless operator picks up a spy transmitting from a nearby area and Dharamveer sets out to investigate. He ambushes the spy and kills the man, bringing the body back to the post to prove that he has overcome his fear of killing. The unit settles down to wait for the enemy as they keep track of the developing events on the radio. The Indian army starts moving forces to nearby locations preparing to attack if Pakistan tries to open the Western front. This gives hope of soon-to-come action for the men tired of the long wait in the hot and desolate desert. Naib Subedar Mathura Das is granted leave to attend to his wife (who is ailing with cancer) and children. The men receive letters with news from back home and talk among of themselves of the people they left to serve their country.
During production and filming, both the Indian Army and Air force was responsible for its generous contribution in providing vehicles, rifles and machine guns as well as uniforms and tactics used by Pakistani Army during the Battle of Longewala. T-55 tanks resembled Chinese origin Pakistani Type-59s, weapons of the 70s era like Bren machine guns and SLRs as well as Air force Planes like Hawker Hunters and MiG-21s were shown. All the actors especially Sunny Deol, Sunil Shetty, Akshaye Khanna and Jackie Shroff were nostalgic and felt elated and honored to be a part of such an epic war movie.

Dance, sex, dance. The hopes & fears of Muzaffarpur's red light sex slaves (RT Documentary)
There is a street in the Indian city of Muzaffarpur, where men come to watch girls sing and dance… but not only. Beyond the front rooms of its establishments, much darker business is conducted, including prostitution and people trafficking.
Today’s ‘dancers’ are the legacy of bygone days, when Hindu priests invited young girls to a big dance and then chose the best to become servants to the gods. These girls were called ‘devadasi’. They would sing and dance as part of temple worship for the rest of their lives. In reality, they were often sexually exploited by the priests and fell into prostitution. When the British abolished this religious institution, the former ‘devadasi’ moved from the temples to the streets.
Muzaffarpur’s red light district is home to more than 2,500 sex workers. The young women that ‘sing and dance’ have ended up here for different reasons. Some have severe family problems, some have been sold, beaten, and coerced, and some are even following in their mothers’ footsteps. All share one thing in common: they are trapped in a horrific life they despise.
No one here openly calls herself a prostitute. Most of the young women are mothers as a result of plying their trade. Poverty and stained reputations present nearly insurmountable barriers to escape. Most have given up on themselves, but still have hope for their children. A special school has been set up to take care of the sons and daughters of mothers who work at night. One prostitute named Nadzhma hopes that with a proper education her children will rise from the surroundings they were born into and, perhaps, pull her out as well.

जैसलमेर---The Golden City - Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer is the largest district of Rajasthan and third largest in the country in area.
Jaisalmer District lies in the Thar Desert, which straddles the border of India and Pakistan. It is bounded on the northeast by Bikaner District, on the east by Jodhpur District, on the south by Barmer District, and on the west and north by Pakistan.
NewsX Video: Sex tourism in North East
Police in the North East are worried about an increase in prostitution in the region. They say sex rackets are being operated from private apartments and residential areas making it difficult to control the menace.
#Remembering1971 Battle of Longewala:
#Remembering1971 Battle of Longewala: On 14 Dec 1971, a Pak armoured regiment had advanced on Longewala, north-west of Jaisalmer during the night, with an aim to capture Ramagarh. At first light, OTU Hunters from Jaisalmer went into attack and flew 18 sorties against tanks and vehicles during the day.
An Army AOP pilot in his Krishak aircraft served as FAC for the Hunters. Nineteen tanks were destroyed and a few damaged, thanks to the Chinese-built T-59 tanks being very vulnerable to 30 mm Cannon fire. This vital action by Hunters broke up the enemy's initial thrust and had favorable strategic implications.

India Vlog: Agra Fort, Baby Taj, Taj Mahal Sunset!
February 14, 2015
instagram.com/timandglo
We were up early to catch our 6:00 am train from New Delhi Railway Station to Agra Fort Railway Station in Agra, Uttar Pradesh! Agra is home to what is arguably India's most famous cultural site: Taj Mahal! We didn't actually visit Taj Mahal on this day, opting to save it for a sunrise visit the following day. But we visited a couple other amazing places in Agra, which provided stunning view of Taj Mahal!
We booked our train tickets online before we arrived in India. You can create an account with IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation), which runs India's train e-ticketing system at You'll need an IRCTC account to book trains on sites like ClearTrip and MakeMyTrip. Hint: You don't need an Indian telephone number to register an account. Just make one up. ;)
We sat in the AC Chair Car Cabin, which was extremely comfortable. Cozy seats and free water, newspapers, and a hot meal!
Once in Agra, we took a rickshaw to the Radisson Blu. This is a beautiful hotel close to the east gate of Taj Mahal. They provide an excellent buffet breakfast!
We paid 1,850 rupees for an all day 4x4 car rental and guide, which we split with our friends. We used the car to see three sites: Agra Fort, the Tomb of I'timad-ud-Daulah (aka. baby Taj or little Taj), and Mehtab Bagh.
Of all the forts we saw in India on this trip, Agra Fort was our favorite! You can get amazing views of Taj Mahal from Agra Fort! Baby Taj is also worth a visit!
Finally we went to to Mehtab Bagh, a park located across the river from Taj Mahal. The way the light hits the Taj during the sunset is very romantic.
Traffic leaving Mehtab Bagh was horrible! It literally took an hour to drive a couple hundred meters. You've been warned. :p But it's worth it! :)
We were exhausted, so we had dinner at the restaurant in the lobby of Radisson Blu. We went for hearty burgers. Glo had chicken burger and Tim had a buffalo burger. Because cows are sacred in India, beef burgers are impossible to find. Fortunately, our chicken and buffalo burgers were delicious!
We hope everyone had a happy Valentine's Day!!
As always, thank you for watching!!

India - Jaisalmer - Fort Palace - Temple - Patawa Havelis - 2017. in 4K
Jaisalmer Fort is one of the largest fully preserved fortified cities in the world. It is situated in the city of Jaisalmer, in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is a World Heritage Site. It was built in 1156 AD by the Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal, from whom it derives its name. The fort stands amidst the sandy expanse of the great Thar Desert, on Trikuta Hill. Before the days of the British Raj, the fortress city served as a refuge and way-station for caravans and travelers along the Silk Road. Its ramparts served as the backdrop for many battles in past centuries when the Silk Road still served as one of the main trade routes between East and West.
The fort's massive yellow sandstone walls are a tawny lion colour during the day, fading to honey-gold as the sun sets, thereby camouflaging the fort in the yellow desert. For this reason, it is also known as the Sonar Quila or Golden Fort. The fort is located along the southern edge of the city that bears its name, and is perhaps one of the more striking monuments in the area, its dominant hilltop location making the sprawling towers of its fortifications visible for many miles around.
In 2013, at the 37th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Jaisalmer Fort, along with 5 other forts of Rajasthan, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the group Hill Forts of Rajasthan.
The fort was built by Rawal Jaisal in 1156 CE.[citation needed] Jaisal conspired with the Sultan of Gaur to dispose his nephew Bhojdev from his territory. The other important event of the fort was during 1276 when King Jetsi strengthened the fort against the invading Sultan of Delhi. The 56 bastions were manned by 3,700 soldiers. After eight years of invasion and siege, the Sultan's army finally breached and destroyed the castle. Bhatis took control of the fort, but had no means to repair it. In 1306, Dodoo was elected the Rawal for his bravery for ejecting the Rathors. He subsequently took up the work of repairing and strenghening the fort.
During the medieval period, the city's location along the Silk Road enabled it to serve as a major center of international trade, and as a warehousing facility for such trade. As such, it facilitated trade and commerce between Persia, Arabia, Egypt, Africa and China.
With the advent of British rule, the emergence of maritime trade and the growth of the port of Bombay led to the gradual economic decline of Jaisalmer. After independence and the Partition of India, the ancient trade route was totally closed, thus sealing the fate of the city. Nonetheless, the continued strategic importance of Jaisalmer was demonstrated during the 1965 and 1971 wars between India and Pakistan Although at one point the entire population of Jaisalmer lived within the fort, it today has a resident population of about 4,000 people who are largely from the Brahmin and Daroga communities. They are mostly descendants of the workforce of the Bhati rulers of Jaisalmer which was permitted to reside within the fort's premises. With an increase in population, people gradually relocated to the foot of the Trikuta Hill and the town of Jaisalmer spread out from the fort.Haveli is generic term used for a traditional townhouse and mansions in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh usually one with historical and architectural significance. The word haveli is derived from Arabic haveli, meaning partition or private space popularised under Mughal Empire and was devoid of any architectural affiliations. Later, the word haveli came to be used as generic term for various styles of regional mansions, townhouse and temples found in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh.
Multistorey structures and balconies during Mauryan Empire, 3rd century BCE.
The traditional courtyard homes in South Asia is built on the ancient principles of Vastu Shastra, which state that all spaces emerge from a single point, that is the centre of the house. Courtyards are common feature in south Asian architecture. The earliest archaeological evidence of courtyard homes in the region dates back to 2600–2450 BCE. Traditional homes in South Asia are built around courtyard and all family activities revolved around chowk or courtyard. Additionally, the courtyard serves as a light well and an effective ventilation strategy for hot and dry climates of South Asia. During medieval period, the term Haveli was first applied in Rajputana by the Vaishnava sect to refer to their temples in Gujarat under the Mughal Empire and Rajputana kingdoms. Later, the generic term haveli eventually came to be identified with townhouse and mansions of the merchant class.
