Convict Mines Historic Site - Lime Bay State Reserve
Between 1833-1848, this site was a convict probation station and the site of Tasmania's first operational coal mine, serving as a place of punishment for the worst class of convicts from Port Arthur. The area of ruins that you see in the video is the remains of the barracks which housed up to 170 prisoners, as well as the chapel, bakehouse and store. Four solitary cells were deep in the underground to punish those who committed further crimes at the mines.

A weekend camping adventure down at the beautiful Lime Bay State Reserve. You don't need a national parks pass nor do you need to book in order to camp here BUT...it gets VERY busy over the tourist season which is why we decided to camp when it cooled off. Looking forward to more winter trips!

Lime Bay Conservation Area
Lime Bay is an idillic beach-side camping area located near the atmospheric convict ruins of the Coal Mines Historic Site north-east of Hobart on the Tasman Peninsula . The campground has shady unpowered campsites suitable for tents, camper trailers and caravans and also has beach access for your 4x4 to launch a boat. There is a local store located 20min drive away if supplies are needed.

One of Tasmania's 60 great short walks, The Coal Mines Historic Site was Tasmania’s first operational mine, established as a much-needed local source of coal, but also as a place of punishment for the ‘worst class’ of convicts.
Along with the Port Arthur Historic Site, the Coal Mines Historic Site is included in the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage property.
A visit to the Coal Mines is a fascinating and rewarding adjunct to any visit to the Port Arthur Historic Site.
The Site is open every day, entry is free and no bookings are necessary.
After visiting The Coal Mines it is worth checking out Lime Bay only about 10 minutes away.

Tasmania's Convict Coal Mine
Fascinating and lonely convict ruins at Saltwater River, Tasman Peninsula, close to Port Arthur.
Mining was commenced in 1834 during the regime of Captain Charles O'Hara Boot and at the peak of production some 500 tonnes of coal per year were sent to Hobart.
There are a total of ten walks in the area, each has its own specific interests, but this video covers just the main buildings and ruins in the convict precinct.

The Cascades Female Factory, Hobart, Tasmania
Here is Carina just after a tour around the Cascades Female factory in Hobart. It was a very enlightening (and emotional) tour. This was a place where female convicts were incarcerated on arrival in Tasmania. And life was not pretty for them!
