Monjeau Lookout: Lincoln National Forest, Ruidoso, New Mexico,
October 30, 2019
Monjeau Lookout is a famous landmark on the Smokey Bear Ranger District built originally in 1936 and then reconstructed in 1940 as part of a Civilian Conservation Corps project. This site is a wonderful and adventurous place to visit. Roads leading up to the site are dirt and can be steep in places. Visit during the summer months as the road leading to it closes during the winter with the advent of snow. Monjeau Lookout is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

Lincoln National Forest - My Trip to New Mexico
This is a great time of year to visit Southern New Mexico. On May 15-16, 2015 I headed to the Sacramento Mountains in the Lincoln National Forest to camp beneath the ponderosa pine and Douglas fir trees. In recent years May has often been a dry month with some Memorial Day weekends closed to public use because of the high fire danger. That was not the case this year.
I always enjoy the road to Sun Spot and took a short hike along the trail at Bluff Spring where years ago we set up camp and saw a black bear.
I was anxious to drive up to Sierra Blanca to check out the 2012 fire. It will be interesting to see what happens in this area in the future. If climate predictions are correct there will not be enough rain in the mountains over the next century to grow back all the Douglas fir and ponderosa pines. In that case we would see more junipers and oaks.
The highlight of my two day trip was visiting a Mescalero Apache family hosting a coming of age ceremony for their teenage daughter. I was the only white man there during the lunch hour and had Indian fried bread and an Indian taco with some Apaches who came in from work in the forest. I felt honored to be there and will always treasure that experience.
On my way home I visited White Sands National Monument. It was windy and near the end of this video you can see sand moving from the top to the bottom of a dune in little waves.
I am looking forward to my next trip in June to pick cherries in the canyon along the road to Cloudcroft.

Driving from Alamogordo, New Mexico to the Lincoln National Forest and mountains in the East
Driving from Alamogordo New Mexico toward the mountains in the East on Hwy 82 that passes through the Lincoln National Forest. The villages passed by are High Rolls, Cloudcroft and Mayhill, NM. The high efficiency Atkinson engine with unequal strokes of the Prius occasionally sounds like a small diesel engine :) Luckily weather was nice and after the hot and dry as bone desert experience this was a very pleasant surprise :) Ion Action Camera was mounted on Nose Cone of Toyota Prius :)

Thunderstorm over Ruidoso New Mexico 8-15-2014
Taken from Lincoln National Forest, above Lower Eagle Creek.
I sped the video up in between strikes, and slowed down the actual lightning.
Storm sound clip: 2_Minute_Thunderstorm-Mike_Koenig-574654058
Shot with a Pentax K3, Video Mode, 30fps, 1080p. Seems it doesn't handle the extreme brightness, as it scans the sensor in bits and pieces. My other guess; it records video in H264 codec, and relies on adjacent frames to build a video. Got to play with that... get it right.
But overall I love the camera. Haven't compared this flaw with other cameras, they may have the same problem.
