Day 1: After checking in at the visitor’s center and a quick stop at Lake of the Clouds, we parked at Little Carp River parking lot. We hiked west along the North Country Trail/Little Carp River Trail to Lake Superior, then northeast for a short distance before heading back southeast on the Big Carp River Trail to BC-8 where we camped for the night. 8+ miles.
Day 2: We continued east on the Big Carp River Trail and then followed the Correction Line Trail to Mirror Lake, stopping to camp at SML-1. 7+ miles.
Day 3: We left Mirror Lake south on the Little Carp River Trail which took us back to our starting point at the parking lot. 4+ miles.
We had plenty of wet and muddy trail, but overall it was an awesome section for a weekend trip. October in the Porkies is spectacular!

Big Carp and Little Carp River loop over Labor Day Weekend 2018. 23 miles over 3 planned days, wound up being 2 days in reality due to muddy trails and getting soaked in the middle of a river crossing by a passing thunderstorm.

Back Country Yurt Life Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park Ontonagon Michigan Lake Superior
Recently, we stayed at the East 4 Back Country Yurt in the Porcupine Mountains Wildlife State Park near Ontonagon Michigan. This video is a virtual tour of the Yurt we reserved and what is all available to better immerse yourself in this experience.
As we approach, you will see parking is fairly nearby the East 4 Yurt where we stayed. You will have to do a small hike to the Yurt and for the West Yurt, it is a short distance farther through the woods. Once you navigate the narrow trail into the site, you will see a green metal bear box for your supplies. Although sightings at the campsite are rare, bears are in the mountains so you will need to take all precautions to keep your food items in the bear box at all times. Some items are provided in the box but we brought most of our items in.
You see a picnic table on site and a firepit. There is no grill. PLEASE note that you will need to bring in your own firewood which will have to be purchased in the area and approved by the rangers to prevent the spread of invasive species. You also will need a grill grate for the top of the firepit for cooking-a tripod cooking stand or metal cooking grate will work. Otherwise, you will need to get creative like us! You can learn from our inexperience!
There is a steep trail leading down to Lake Superior from the Yurt which is located on a small ridge. Be careful going down the path as it is slippery and rugged. The view is breathtaking as you are surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature. Dense wood and the sound of crashing waves provide the backdrop to this Yurting experience.
Inside the Yurt you will see there are two sets of bunk beds to accommodate up to 4 people. A small rustic table and chairs, a wood stove, and a few important amenities are provided as well. There is also a few guest journals that catalog others who have enjoyed this Yurt. Take a few moments to read these passages to add more life to your trip.
You will need to walk a short distance for restroom facilities so keep that in mind when planning. There is no running water and no electricity in the Yurt. Come prepared to have a more pioneering experience by bringing plenty of water and lighting.
We hope this short video is enjoyable and this virtual helps you decide if this experience is one you too would love to enjoy. If you have any questions, please feel free to comment! Please Subscribe, Like, Comment, and Share our channel and videos! Thanks for watching
