Little River Canyon National Preserve (Fort Payne)
The preserve sits at the southern edge of the #Cumberland #Plateau, a distinct physiographic region just to the west of the main #Appalachian #Mountain uplift. Composed of sandstone and other sedimentary rocks, this area has been eroded by water over millions of years to create a landscape of ridges, outcroppings, and gorges known as a #dissected #plateau. #Little #River #Canyon is one of the most spectacular landforms in this region, carved into the flat top of #Lookout #Mountain and reaching depths in excess of 600 feet in some sections. It is one of the #deepest #canyon systems east of the #Mississippi #River and the deepest in the state of #Alabama.

Little River Canyon, Alabama, United States 2002
Little River Canyon National Preserve is a United States National Preserve located on top of Lookout Mountain near Fort Payne, Alabama, and DeSoto State Park. The canyon was historically called May's Gulf, gulf being a common term throughout the Cumberland Plateau for this sort of feature (e.g. Savage Gulf in Tennessee, or Trenton Gulf nearby in Georgia, now renamed Cloudland Canyon). The canyon is sometimes said to be the deepest canyon in the United States east of the Mississippi River.

This is the only video that I could find with a decent view of Shigley's Hole on the DeSoto Scout Trail in Little River National Preserve. This is a great swimming hole in the summer and just an all around inspiring place. There are so many cool spots just a few feet from the trail. Check out the facebook page for news on improvements to the trail and to download updated maps.
58 Little River Canyon National Preserve Discovering Alabama
Alabama’s Little River Canyon has been called the Grand Canyon of the South. And, indeed, it is one of the most dramatic physiographic features in the South.’ In 1985, Discovering Alabama featured Little River Canyon in one of the series’ earliest shows, drawing public attention to the unique natural attributes of the canyon and helping to win protective National Preserve status for a part of the canyon. In this program Discovering Alabama marks its 20th year anniversary by returning to Little River Canyon to examine the canyon’s current status and consider its future. Our visit to Little River Canyon
Little River Canyon
Recorded October 26, 2019
This video covers my scenic autumn visit to the Little River Canyon National Preserve on top of Lookout Mountain near Fort Payne, Alabama. The preserve protects what is sometimes said to be the nation's longest mountaintop river, the Little River. The undammed river is said to be among the cleanest and wildest waterways in the South. Sandstone cliffs tower up to 600 feet above the narrow canyon floor and are frequently visible from the 23-mile scenic parkway which is featured in this video. Little River Falls is located within the preserve and marks the beginning of the Little River Canyon. Grace's High Falls, which falls into the side canyon created by Bear Creek is Alabama's highest waterfall at 133 feet. Other overlooks visited in this video are Lynn Overlook, Hawks Glide, Canyon View, Wolf Creek Overlook and Eberhart Point Overlook.
After leaving the preserve I drive 39 miles south to Gadsden, Alabama to visit Noccalula Falls which plunges 90-feet into the Black Creek Gorge.

Little River Canyon National Preserve is a United States National Preserve located on top of Lookout Mountain near Fort Payne, Alabama, and DeSoto State Park. Created by an act of Congress in 1992, the nearly 14,000-acre (5,700 ha) preserve protects what is sometimes said to be the nation's longest mountaintop river, the Little River. Prior to being assigned to the National Park Service, the canyon area formed the southmost unit of Alabama's DeSoto State Park.

Little River Canyon Overlook - Fort Payne Alabama
This is one of the overlooks on Little River Canyon Rim Parkway (Alabama State Route 176) outside of Fort Payne, AL. Me and a friend were riding KLR650's on a 1,500 mile ride and this was one of the highlights.
Little River Canyon
This is a personal project to test new gear that I shot at Little River Canyon which is located in northeast Alabama just east of Fort Payne. This river is one of the nation's longest rivers that flows across a mountain top. It changes elevation from 1900 feet above sea level to 650, creating a spectacular gorge system.
I hiked the Little River National Preserve for two days after a heavy spring rain which put river flow at a nice level. The canyon walls are nearly vertical making travel to the gorge floor difficult except for a few locations. This is one of the best outings I have had in a while as I was awed by the primeval feeling I experienced while exploring the gorge.
