BHTV: Western North Carolina is a Top Mountain Biking Destination
One of the most popular ways to live an active and healthy lifestyle in our region is by cycling. Whether mountain or road biking, folks love to get out and take full advantage of our gorgeous terrain. In fact, National Geographic Adventure has named our region a top mountain-biking destination, and even said we were quickly becoming the Boulder, Colorado of the Southeast—with better riding.

“My name is Jordan Salman, owner of The Hub, here in Brevard, North Carolina, located at the entrance of Pisgah National Forest and really close to Dupont State Recreational Forest. We love seeing families out enjoying bike rides in our area. My husband and I take our three-year-old out to ride the trails, and we just love spending time outside together.
“Our shop is a great place to start your mountain bike ride, rent one of our nice demos, and go experience the Pisgah trails,” says Salman. “We keep six beers on draft in our Pisgah Tavern. It's a fun place to gather after, before a ride, go for a hike, talk about your adventure.
“The best thing about the cycling around Brevard, North Carolina is the diversity,” says Salman. “We have world-class road cycling on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We have family-friendly trails in Dupont State Forest that were purpose-built. We have rugged, epic mountain biking in Pisgah. We have it all.”
Our agents are intimately familiar with the communities they work in. They dedicate their time to the nonprofits. They play in these mountains.
“My name is Claudia Nix. I am co-owner of Liberty Bicycles with my husband, Mike. Our business is 33 years old this year. I've been involved in advocacy work for almost 40 years.
“Liberty Bicycles is based here in Asheville, and the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, which I formed in 1974, reaches beyond Asheville,” says Nix. “We are a Western North Carolina club. We have a chapter in Haywood County called Bicycle Haywood. We have folks in Henderson County, Transylvania County, Yancey County, all over Western North Carolina where we hold rides. One of my favorite rides is in Haywood County along Highway 215 in Canton. It goes out along the river, and then climbs up to Sunburst, and then continues climbing onto the Blue Ridge Parkway, where you can end up making a loop by coming back on 276. It's a delightful ride, and offers a lot of variety.”
“Hi, my name is Sam White. I'm the general manager at Liberty Bicycles here in Asheville, North Carolina. We're located right here close by the Blue Ridge Parkway, so we got access to some of the best riding around.”
“We have people come into the store, really from all over the United States, all over the world,” says White. “No matter the season—whether it's spring, fall, summer—the riding is great. Many people come through here in the late-winter into early spring from the Northeast and in Canada, get out of the snow pack, come do some riding.”

Blue Ridge Parkway Quarter Unveiled
ASHEVILLE, N.C. State and federal officials joined the public downtown on Thursday for the unveiling of the Blue Ridge Parkway quarter.
Kids got free commemorative coins. Rolls of coins worth $10 were available for cash exchange.
The quarter features the North Carolina state flower and a parkway tunnel.
The tunnel is not a specific tunnel but instead a depiction of a tunnel meant to remind people of traveling the parkway.
Girl Scout Julie Remington, 10, of Asheville, participated in the ceremony. And she got a coin.
I really was happy about it because being some of the first people to get it is a really big honor, she said.
North Carolina Lt. Governor Dan Forest joined David Croft of the U.S. Mint in unveiling the quarter.
Sharing the history of America and all the national park sites with the country is very important, Croft said. And the most important thing in my opinion is sharing it with the younger people of the country they get a free quarter. It's something they will remember and treasure for the future and it helps educate people on all the natural beauty of the country.
Parkway Superintendent Mark Woods said he was pleased with how the quarter turned out.
It's a tremendous event, he said. A great opportunity to not only reflect on the history of the past and the present but really look to the future of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Asheville Savings Bank will exchange cash for rolls of the new quarters Friday at the Enka and Reynolds branches and Monday in Brevard, Fletcher and Marion.
That might be the best way to see one of the quarters. They worth the same as any other quarter but collectors probably won't spend them.
Remington said her coin is a keepsake.
I am going to save it and pass it on to my children, she said.

BHTV: Hiking in Our Outdoor Playgrounds across Western North Carolina
Today, we're headed outside to take a hike and breathe some of this fantastic, fresh mountain air. We were recently chosen as one of the greenest and healthiest cities in the United States because of our air quality and the stress-free attitude that we have here.
BHTV: Western North Carolina is a Top Mountain Biking Destination:

BHTV: Asheville Parks, Part 2 – Carrier Park, Asheville's Most Popular Park:
With some of the highest peaks in the east, and miles of trails, visitors from all over the world come to Western North Carolina to explore this gorgeous landscape. And locals enjoy the areas and outdoor playground right in their backyards.
“I am the Trails and Outreach Coordinator for Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy,” says Peter Barr. “What we do is we protect land and water resources in Western North Carolina. We do this by placing conservation easements on land and [by] acquiring land for the benefit of the public and to preserve the beauty of our region.”
Consistently, the real estate market shows that people will pay more for property that's located close to open space. But of course, that's not the only reason to protect this open space.
“I decided to move to Western North Carolina because it is, without question, the most beautiful region in our entire state,” says Barr. “My wife and I visited Western North Carolina, in the mountains, to hike for about 7 or 8 years before we moved up here. We always knew that one day we wanted to live here, and we finally fell in love with it so much that we decided to make it our home.”
“I've been hiking since I could walk,” says Chris Neumann, founder of the Asheville Hiking Group. “I grew up in Waynesville, and then moved over to Asheville. I started the Asheville Hiking Group in February of 2008. Since then, we've amassed over 1800 members. I've led over 700 hikes, and we've got members everywhere from Eastern Tennessee to the Piedmont of North Carolina to South Carolina. We even have some in Virginia. Personally, I like the waterfall hikes. There's so many around.
“The trails in the area—basically, the mountains are just beautiful here,” says Ben Dickert, outdoor specialist at Mast General Store. “You got tons of different rivers around you can go hiking by. We've got local trails all around here, that’s just thousands of miles. Basically, Asheville is surrounded completely by national forest, several trails that are even close by. You've got the Blue Ridge Parkway, and then the Mountains to Sea Trail, which parallels the Parkway. So that offers close-by hiking year round. Especially when the Parkway's closed, it's great—you go walking up and down the road. It's just, overall it's just pretty. People are nice, the culture is nice, and overall just a fun place to live.”

Pisgah National Forest is a National Forest in the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina. It is administered by the United States Forest Service, part of the United States Department of Agriculture. The Pisgah National Forest is completely contained within the state of North Carolina. The forest is managed together with the other three North Carolina National Forests (Croatan, Nantahala, and Uwharrie) from common headquarters in Asheville, North Carolina. There are local ranger district offices located in Pisgah Forest, Mars Hill, and Nebo.
The Pisgah National Forest was established in 1916, one of the first national forests in the eastern United States. The new preserve included approximately 86,700 acres that had been part of the Biltmore Estate, but were sold to the federal government in 1914 by Edith Vanderbilt. Some of the forest tracts were among the first purchases by the Forest Service under the Weeks Act of 1911. While national forests had already been created in the western United States, the Weeks Act provided the authority required to create national forests in the east as well. Although tracts in the future Pisgah National Forest were among the first purchased under the Weeks Act, the very first to receive formal approval was the 31,000-acre (130 km2) Gennett Purchase in northern Georgia. On March 25, 1921 Boone National Forest was added to Pisgah, and on July 10, 1936, most of Unaka National Forest was added. In 1954 the Pisgah National Forest was administratively combined with the Croatan and Nantahala national forests, collectively known as the National Forests of North Carolina.[5]
American forestry has roots in what is now the Pisgah National Forest. The Cradle of Forestry, (Biltmore Forest School), located in the southern part of the forest, was the site of the first school of forestry in the United States. It operated during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The school was opened and operated at the direction of George Washington Vanderbilt II, builder of the Biltmore Estate in Asheville. The Forestry Education offered at Biltmore was taught by Carl Schenk. A native German, Schenk was referred to Vanderbilt when Gifford Pinchot resigned to operate the newly formed Division of Forestry. The Cradle of Forestry and the Biltmore Estate played a major role in the birth of the U.S. Forest Service. Today these lands are part of an educational and recreational area in Pisgah National Forest.[6]
Located on the forest property is the Bent Creek Campus of the Appalachian Forest Experiment Station, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

White Squirrels at rest and play
The white squirrels of Brevard, NC are a color variant of the Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) . They are not albinos. The coat is mostly white but there is a distinctive head patch and dorsal stripe and the eyes are black. If you look closely you can see several squirrels with different head, back, nose, and ear markings in the movie. The white variant makes up ~25% of our local gray squirrels, amounting to almost a thousand white squirrels in the Brevard city limits (3 square miles).
According to popular folklore, white squirrels arrived in Brevard from Florida. There a circus train crash released white squirrels of questionable origin who established a population in the surrounding Jacksonville area. A nearby resident delivered a pair to relatives in Brevard in 1949 who eventually released them.
Today, white squirrels with similar markings are found from Lake Toxaway to the west and Hendersonville to the east (a span of approximately 50 miles), interbreeding with native gray squirrels. They apparently spread from Brevard by either migration or trapping. These pictures were taken at or near our house, located about 10 miles from Brevard.
