* Please see date note below * We took a day trip down Loch Shiel, the fifth longest loch in Scotland, from Glenfinnan to Acharacle. I used to work on this loch, so I was kinda expecting it to be good. But some stuff just amazed me. You want to see eagles? Jim Michie will show you eagles! Thanks must go to Jim, his company Loch Shiel Cruises, and his crew aboard the lovely boat Sìleas. Then a lovely lunch at the Loch Shiel Hotel in Acharacle, and back up the loch. What's not to like :)

This recent video shows two importanrt sites.
Firstly the landing place where, with a few companions, Charles Edward Louis Philippe Casimir Stuart ( Bonnie Prince Charlie) landed on July 25th 1745 and raised his standard with aim of taking the crowns of England and Scotland (to which he had a legitimate claim). This venture ended in disaster at Culloden (near Inverness) in April 1746 when his army was heavily defeated by a British (Hanoverian) army under General Cumberland.
Secondly, the viaduct (ralway bridge) isa fascinating pice of civil engineering dating from the very early 20th century and is made entirely of concrete, itself a revolutionary product of its day. Over this magnificent edifice trundles the Jacobite ((Harry Potter') steam train twice a day during the summer season.
A very popular visitor attraction between Fort Willaim and Mallaig.

Sanna Beach to The Glenfinnan Monument - The West Scotland Adventure - Stage 09
* Tarmac Tourism // Asphalt Adventures // Road Reviews * Stage 9 would see us driving from Sanna Beach to The Glenfinnan Monument, along the B8007, A861 and A830, a distance of 56 miles.
Sanna Beach can be found in Sanna Bay on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, a short drive from Ardnamurchan point to the south, where we finished our previous stage, and Sanna Point to the north.
On a clear day it is possible to see the Scottish islands of Rhum, Muck, Eigg and Canna from the beach with the possibility of also seeing whales and dolphins. Other wildlife in the area also includes; sea eagles, otters and pine martens.
The Glenfinnan Monument can be found on the shore of Loch Shiel and was built in 1815 on the site where Bonnie Prince Charlie first raised his forces in preparation for the Jacobite Uprising on the 19th August 1745.
The monument is a tribute not only to the Jacobite clansmen who died during the uprising, but also to Alexander Macdonald of Glenaladale, who is the man who commissioned Scottish architect James Gillespie Graham to design the monument. The statue that sits atop the monument was not added until 1835.
The monument is 18 metres tall and its construction was only made possible by the building of the nearby road, now known as the A830, in 1812 which was commissioned by a man known as Thomas Telford that stretches from Fort William to Arisaig.
Also nearby are the Glenfinnan Viaduct and the island that was used as the filming location for the Triwizard Tournament in the Harry Potter film series.

A trip around loch shiel yesterday in the Scottish Highlands
Scottish Highlands in Winter - Glenfinnan to Glencoe
On Friday 2nd February 2019, Peter Adams and I headed North to catch the Northern Lights and Milky Way, we stopped off at Mallaig to catch this event at Skye.
We wild camped for the night to allow us an early start.
At 7am, tent all packed away, we drove back towards Fort William, stopping off firstly at Glenfinnan to photograph the Glenfinnan Monument and Glenfinnan Viaduct (the one that the Harry Potter Hogwart's Express crosses daily in the summer months).
Of course, this was the depth of Winter and the snow on the mountains coupled with blue sky and sunshine made the perfect conditions for taking photographs.
After Loch Shiel and Glenfinnan we spotted at Loch Eil and the Corpach to photograph the wreck with Britain's highest mountain behind it.
Then onto Loch Leven where The Pap of Glencoe was reflecting beautifully.
We stopped off at Achnambeithach for some more reflections, this time of the Aonach Eagach Ridge and Bidean Nam Bian.
Next up, The Black Rock cottage with the Buachaille Etive Mor bringing up the rear.
Finally the view from the Loch Tulla Viewpoint with Ben Dorain finishing the magical journey.
All put to the song The Atholl Highlanders as performed by The Black Watch during their 2018 homecoming parade through the city of Perth.

Do YOU fly or want to fly a remote controlled aircraft in the UK?
To avoid injuring or killing people first and foremost, but also therefore becoming the person who causes a huge shake up in who can and cannot legally operate Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems, (RPAS) make sure you know UK CAA airspace regulations with regard to RC aircraft under 20Kg.
Here's a basic summary of the ones to keep in mind:
• The maximum permitted altitude is 400 feet (120 metres) above ground level
• The maximum distance RPAS can be flown from the operator is 500 metres
• The minimum visibility needs to be 5 km
• RPAS must be flown in line of sight of the operator
• An RPAS cannot be flown at night without special permission from the CAA
• Permission must be obtained from the owner of the take-off point
• An RPAS cannot be flown within 50 metres of structures, vehicles or people that are not under the control of the person in charge of the aircraft
• An RPAS cannot be flown over or within 150 metres of any built up area

Sea Kayak - Glenfinnan to Isle of Muck
A late August 215 paddle starting at the Glenfinnan Memorial at the top of Loch Shiel and ending on the Isle of Muck. Our route took us the length of Loch Shiel on which we had interesting 40mph gust’s blowing from behind, a quick visit to St Finnans Chapel on Eilean Fhianain and our first night on the shore of the loch. The following day we followed the river Shiel (very scenic and a favoured fishing spot) ending at the infamous spillway connection (where I fell out) and into Loch Moidart, finally reaching the coast and turning left into open water at Eilean Shona.
We then headed West along the coast until we reached Kilmory Beach where we had a another night camping and complaining about midges. In the morning we did our 8 mile open water crossing to the Isle of Muck. We were just a few miles East of Ardnamurchan Point which is well known for being the most westerly point on the British mainland and for picking up large Atlantic swell, but this was a relatively good day with smooth, moving hills of water gently lifting and lowering us out of sight of each other.

Winter Loch Shiel Lochaber Scottish Highlands Scotland
Tour Scotland Winter video of Loch Shiel on ancestry visit to Lochaber in the Scottish Highlands. This Scottish loch is the location of the fictional Black Lake near Hogwarts in the film versions of the Harry Potter series. It is also the fictional birthplace of Connor and Duncan MacLeod from the Highlander series. The loch was also used in the filming of the movie The Master of Ballantrae starring Errol Flynn.
