Valley Thingvellir (Þingvellir) has enormous historical importance for Iceland. In the 930 years it took place here the first meeting of the Icelandic parliament - the Althing, which is one of the oldest parliamentary institutions of the world, who sit today. The name refers to the location of the event Thing - assembly Vellir - valley.
Althing was held here until the end of VXIII century. Also in this place June 17, 1944 it was announced the full independence of the Republic of Iceland. Currently, MPs sitting every day in Reykjavik moving on holidays just to Thingvellir.
The original settlers of Iceland, mainly exiles from the Scandinavian countries had enough of governments kings or earls. On top of that they liked to put on her, which often ended in bloodshed. To solve this problem, earnestly sought for the place that will be able to accommodate the thousands of people, cattle, and ensured good acoustics. This place has just been found in the valley Oxary on the northern shore of the biggest lake in Iceland Thingvallavatn.

He currently serves as the office park ranger and is a summerhouse, Prime Minister of the country.
In Thingvellir is also a gap which is the boundary between two tectonic plates: the Eurasian and North American.
Here, too, it is the largest lake located on an island Thingvallavatn, with an area of 83.7 km2 and a depth of up to 114m. The bottom of the lake is unstable, earthquakes cause raising or lowering the level of flowing to the size of the lake.
Despite the very low temperatures, created in 1928 Thingvellir National Park, characterized by a rich flora and fauna. There is here more than 150 species of plants, approx. 50 species of invertebrates and many species of fish, including trout. The lake is popular with anglers, but before fishing it is necessary to purchase a permit.
In 2004 Thingvellir National Park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Iceland Walking Tour - Golden Circle [4K]
This is a sightseeing tour of the Golden Circle in Iceland. The Golden Circle consists of Iceland’s three most popular tourist attractions: Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir geothermal area and Þingvellir national park. These places are about an hour and a half drive from Reykjavik city and are close enough for you to be able to do the full tour in 5 hours by car. The Golden Circle derives its name from Gullfoss Waterfall, which means Golden waterfall in Icelandic. Highlights of the tour:
00:00 - We start the tour in Þingvellir. Heads up for the squeamish, many places in Þingvellir were used for executing people in the past. We have just passed Langistígur (the Walk of Death), where prisoners took their last steps down into the canyon you are now looking at, which is called Stekkjargjá canyon. Some people were hanged here in the canyon, others decapitated.

00:40 - You can see how much it has snow recently. I’m standing about 2 meters above the path.
04:45 - This is Öxarárfoss waterfall. It is said some pioneers once dropped an axe into the frozen river, thus naming it “Axe river”. Öxarárfoss basically means “Axe river falls”.
08:10: Some parking space closeby. Take notice there is a fee of about 750kr.
14:40 - Underneath the ice here is a pool of water called Drekkingarhylur (drowning pool). Women used to be put in a bag and drowned here.
16:00 - The flag marks the location of Lögberg (Law Rock). This is believed by some to be the location where the Althing parliament gathered centuries ago.
18:35 - You are now in Almannagja canyon. This canyon marks the boundary of the Mid-Atlantic rift, which is the space between the North American and Eurasion tectonic plates. Big stuff we are talking about here.
22:33 - Looking over Þingvallavatn lake. The largest natural lake in Iceland.
30:23 - Þingvallakirkja church can be seen in the distance.
33:55 - Silfra fissure. It is filled with meltwater from Langjökull glacier. Many have gone diving or snorkeling here.
34:54 - Peningagjá, it is customary to throw a coin into the water for good luck or to make a wish, you can see the bottom of the water is filled with coins.
35:00 - You are now in Haukadalur valley, where we will be hiking to see the hot springs. There is no entrance fee.
38:28 - People are gathering around Strokkur geyser (the Churn). It erupts every 5 to 10 minutes. Lets wait for it.
42:06 - There it goes again.
43:55 - This spring is called Blesi (Blaze).
44:20 - Downhill you can see the Great Geysir. Supposedly it blasted water some 60-80 meters into the air but it has now been dormant for decades.
45:00 - Konungshver, the Royal Spring. Named after the Danish King Christian IX, who visited the Geysir area in 1874.
45:22 - We will now climb up mount Laugafell to take a view over the area.
56:08 - Finally to end the Golden circle tour we will see Gullfoss waterfall (Golden falls). The waterfall can be visited 24/7 free of charge.
58:31 - There it is. The waterfall consists of two drops, the first 11 meters and the second 21 meters. We will now take a look at it from different angles.

Reykjavík is the capital and largest city of Iceland and with an urban area population of around 200,000, it is the home of the vast majority of Iceland's inhabitants. It is the centre of culture and life of the Icelandic people as well as being one of the focal points of tourism in Iceland. The city itself is spread out, with sprawling suburbs. The city centre, however, is a very small area characterized by eclectic and colourful houses, with good shopping, dining, and drinking. There is no need to tip anyone, despite all too many restaurants and shops having tip jars besides their cash register. Off-road driving is illegal and huge fines are imposed when you are caught.
0:01 Thingvellir National Park
Thingvellir is a favourite stop among travellers along the Golden Circle route. It has been a National Park in Iceland since 1930 and was named a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2004. When Viking settlers arrived in the 10th century it was the site they chose as the meeting place of Althing, the world’s oldest parliament.
The location may seem a bit out of the way, but the unique geology created a natural amphitheatre perfect for public speaking including the high rock wall of Logberg, where the laws of the land would be recited from memory.
Aside from its historic interest, Thingvellir holds a special appeal for nature lovers. It is the visible site of the mid-Atlantic Ridge where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, and are being pulled apart at a rate of 2 centimetres per year, creating the Thingvellir Rift Valley. The geology here is not only interesting to learn about but also spectacular to behold.
In winter if also offers a great view, especially after dark when the Northern Lights reign supreme on the sky. When snow covers the lave field and the days are short, the landscape becomes almost surreal and offers some great photo opportunities. Thingvellir has been a favorite spot among professional and amature photographers for years, and for a good reason.
1:29 Strokkur Geyser
A favorite stop along the Golden Circle is the highly active Geysir Hot Spring Area with boiling mud pits, exploding geysers and the lively Strokkur which spouts water 30 metres into the air every few minutes. The newly opened Geysir Center offers exhibits and informative presentations year round. Geysir Hot Spring Area is one of the most popular tourist stop in Iceland.
The geothermal field is believed to have a surface area of approximately 3 km². Most of the springs are aligned along a 100m wide strip of land running in the same direction as the tectonic lines in the area, from south to southwest. The strip is 500m long and culminates near what once was the seat of the lords of Haukadalur.
The area became active more than 1000 years ago and comprises more than a dozen hot water blow holes. Although Geysir is less active these days, it did lend its name to hot springs all over the world. It was the first geyser described in a printed source and the first known to modern Europeans.
The oldest account of Geysir in Haukadalur Valley date back to 1294, earthquakes in southern Iceland caused changes in the geothermal area and created several new hot springs. Researches in the 19th century showed that Geysir could reach the height of 170 meters! Seismic actvity in the area has effect on Geysir and after being dormant for years, Geysir was revived by an earthquake in 2000 and erupted for a couple of times a day for a few years. Now, Geysir is mostly dormant, though other hot springs in the Geysir geothermal area are quite active.
A truly unique experience offered is Geysir or ‘hot spring bread’, where visitors assist a chef to boil eggs outside in a hot spring, and dig up rye bread that has been ‘baking’ underground for 24 hours.
2:19 Gullfoss Waterfall
A ride along the Golden Circle in the south of Iceland reveals the breathtaking Gullfoss Waterfall where traversing a narrow path provides close-up views of the massive, two-tiered waterfall below. In winter the view is spectacular when the waterfall freezes over into undulating waves of glistening ice. On sunny days visitors are treated to thousands of rainbows, a natural reaction with the clouds of spray from the tumbling falls.
