Tours, Loire, France
The world's most famous collection of palaces is in the Loire Valley outside of Paris in France. You’ll find the city of Tours is a very good home base for staying a few days, and from here you can easily explore the Loire Valley, and visit the many illustrious Château that are in the region. Most of the major attractions are within 30 to 40 minutes away from Tours – it's very convenient either by train or by private Tours company.
A big attraction of Tours are the large number of hotels available in a wide range of prices, and lots of restaurants – and the train station is right in the center of town, so it's real convenient for getting around. Tours is easy to reach from Paris by train. You can take the high-speed TGV from Montparnasse Station and it just takes an hour and 12 minutes with no change of train necessary, so that's very convenient. And the train station is right in the middle of town when you arrive in Tour, so everything is just in front of you.In the tangle of narrow streets branching off from the Place Plumereau, one finds many examples of fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth century houses, including a few with wooden fronts ornamented with roughly carved statuettes.
France: Normandy & the Loire
In this travel lecture, Steve Smith describes Normandy (D-Day beaches, Monet's gardens at Giverny, half-timbered Honfleur, and evocative Mont St-Michel) and the belle-époque châteaux of the Loire Valley (including Chenonceau). Visit for more European travel information.

Places to see in ( Tours - France )
Tours is a university town between France's Cher and Loire rivers. Once a Gallic-Roman settlement, today it's a university town and a traditional gateway for exploring the chateaux of the Loire Valley region. Major landmarks include the cathedral, Saint-Gatien, whose flamboyant Gothic facade is flanked by towers with 12th-century bases and Renaissance tops.
Tours is a city located in the centre-west of France. It is the administrative centre of the Indre-et-Loire department and the largest city in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France (although it is not the capital, which is the region's second-largest city, Orléans).
Tours stands on the lower reaches of the River Loire, between Orléans and the Atlantic coast. The surrounding district, the traditional province of Touraine, is known for its wines, for the alleged perfection (as perceived by some speakers and for historical reasons) of its local spoken French, and for the Battle of Tours (732). The city is also the end-point of the annual Paris–Tours cycle race.
Alot to see in ( Tours - France ) such as :
The cathedral of Tours, dedicated to Saint Gatien, its canonized first bishop, was begun about 1170 to replace the cathedral that was burnt out in 1166, during the dispute between Louis VII of France and Henry II of England. The lowermost stages of the western towers belong to the 12th century, but the rest of the west end is in the profusely detailed Flamboyant Gothic of the 15th century, completed just as the Renaissance was affecting the patrons who planned the châteaux of Touraine. These towers were being constructed at the same time as, for example, the Château de Chenonceau. When the 15th-century illuminator Jean Fouquet was set the task of illuminating Josephus's Jewish Antiquities, his depiction of Solomon's Temple was modeled after the nearly-complete cathedral of Tours. The atmosphere of the Gothic cathedral close permeates Honoré de Balzac's dark short novel of jealousy and provincial intrigues, Le Curé de Tours (The Curate of Tours) and his medieval story Maitre Cornélius opens within the cathedral itself.
Jardin botanique de Tours, the municipal botanical garden
Musée des Beaux-Arts de Tours
Hôtel Goüin
Tours is famous for its original medieval district, called le Vieux Tours. Unique to the Old City are its preserved half-timbered buildings and la Place Plumereau, a square with busy pubs and restaurants, whose open-air tables fill the centre of the square. The Boulevard Beranger crosses the Rue Nationale at the Place Jean-Jaures and is the location of weekly markets and fairs. Tours is famous for its many bridges crossing the river Loire. One of them, the Pont Wilson, collapsed in 1978, but was rebuilt just like it was before. Tours is home to François Rabelais University, the site of one of the most important choral competitions, called Florilège Vocal de Tours International Choir Competition, and is a member city of the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing.

River Cruise Advisor: A Journey Along The Loire River
The Loire is one of France's most beautiful rivers, but because of notoriously shallow depths, the river has been largely unnavigable for river cruisers - until recently. Strasbourg-based CroisiEurope developed a paddlewheeler that can propel itself along the Loire, and now for the first time ever, this beautiful river is possible to experience on a river cruise.

Tours in France is popular not only because it is on the Loire Valley route but also due to its historical attractions.
Tours is on of the oldest city in France.
Best known as the Garden of France, Tours, France shares real estate with the Loire River Valley, small, rolling hills, and incredible gardens. At times, the city has even been said to rival Paris in atmosphere and charm. Indeed, its many shops, metropolitan centers, and great monuments, museums, and attractions definitely give its bigger rival on the Seine a run for its money. In Tours, you’ll have a hard time running out of things to do—its prime location gives you a great starting point from which to explore the entire Loire Valley.

Loire Valley Cycle Trip Jun:Jul17
Cycle and lightweight camping trip in the Loire Valley.
If I was offering advice to anyone else contemplating this trip - I'd say start in Nantes (the route from Nantes to St Nazaire includes a long canal and 10km of heavy industry) and travel east to Nevers. I had to cope with headwinds for the whole route. So - check the long distance forecast - because headwinds are difficult when you're trying to shift a loaded bicycle and keep up a steady cadence, even on the flat. The route from Nantes eastwards is very pretty and there are some lovely campsites en route.

Tours, the principal city of the department of Indre-et-Loire (formerly Touraine) in the Loire Valley, has a well preserved cultural heritage which rests easily against its modern, vibrant and dynamic image of today. It has been a seat of learning since the middle ages and carries on this fine tradition through its university today. The city has much to offer the first time visitor and although small enough to walk its modern tramway transport system allows for easy and inexpensive access to many of its landmarks and tourist sites.
You can sample the old Tours (Vieux Tours) by visiting the popular Place Plumereau with its carefully restored half-timbered townhouses. The area is packed with cafes/bars and restaurants of every kind and everything from aperitif to late night coffee is catered for.
A stroll through the old quarter of Tours, day or night, offers many distractions and delights. Rue Colbert which lies midway between Place Plumereau and the cathedral is gaining a reputation as one of the most fashionable streets in the city for its young population.
There are many opportunities for shopping in Tours with modern centres such as Galeries Lafayette on Rue Nationale and Printemps on Boulevard Heurteloup but to find the more interesting shops you have to head up to the old quarter and the streets around Rue du Commerce and Rue Colbert.
You could spend weeks here and still not sample all the culinary delights the city has to offer. One of our favourites restaurants is 'Le Chien Jaune' which is conveniently situated near the tourist office and railway station
Another good value restaurant is 'Le Bord'o' on Rue de Bordeaux which is the pedestrian street off to the left as you leave the railway station - here you can enjoy the 'plat de jour' or simply have a snack and you'll normally find some thing for the kids. Another great place for kids (and adults) is 'Mamie Bigoude' a great creparie on Rue de Châteauneuf. The inside is so funky that you have to explore.
For those who wish to seek out the culture of the city there are many fine monuments and museums. The Cathedrale St-Gatien with its flamboyant Gothic facade is an imposing piece of architecture both by day and by night. Musee des Beaux-arts is a fine provincial museum in the Palais des Archeveques and is worth a visit to view its rooms, furnished to suit the dates of the paintings on display, alone. There are works by Rembrandt, Degas and Houdon to be savoured.

Chinon, Loire, France travel video
Driving through the main shopping lane of the historic town of Chinon, in the Loire, France, gives us a quick preview of the lanes in which we'll soon be taking a little walk. It's primarily a pedestrian zone but our tour van has permission to bring us in here and then drop us off – very convenient for us.
We took a short drive uphill in our tour van and stopped for an overview of the Old Town – a spectacular vista down below, all those slate roofs on top of buildings dating back 400, 500 years old in some cases. There are remains of a large castle up on the hill also overlooking the town.
Road Trip: Destination Loire Valley
Road Trip: Destination Loire Valley
One of the best things about the Languedoc region in France is our centralized location and ease of road trips. One of our favorite short road trips is the magnificent Loire Valley with her rich landscape and romantic chateaux. The area also has been touched by many historical figures from Richard the Lionheart to Joan of Arc and Leonardo da Vinci. While each chateau deserves her own story we will just share few to wet your appetite to see more.
