The Loneliest Road in America Highway 50 Nevada Adventure
Few places in the U.S. lower 48 states are as remote as the stretch of Highway 50 that runs through the Basin and Range of Nevada. The highway is so far off the beaten path, Life Magazine nemed it The Loneliest Road in America. Driving it west from the Utah state line, we really didn't see a lot of other vehicles. What we did see, however, was wonderful. We occasionally passed through old mining towns with names like White Pine, Eureka and Austin that had a mix of saloons, trinket shops, empty storefronts and mine tailings and abandoned mining equipment that hinted at their storied pasts. We camped in a dusty campsite that had natural hotsprings we could soak in just east of Austin. Exploring the area in our Subaru Outback -- you must have an off-road capable vehicle if you go off the highway -- we were astonished to drive 50 miles to Belmont, Nevada, only to find the designated ghost town was full of friendly and/or quirky people (mostly RVers and ATVers) preparing to celebrate the Fourth of July with a parade and other festivities on the town's unpaved main street. We also marveled at ancient, Native American petroglyphs, wild horses and mules, and the wide open sky, which is a stunner day and night. Larry Richardson created this video using a Sony FDR-AX53 camcorder for 4k video and Apple iPhone 7 for HD video. The video was edited on a Mac Book Pro using Apple Final Cut Pro X software.
The Loneliest Road in America: U.S. Route 50 in Nevada
U.S. Route 50 stretches over 3,000 miles from Ocean City, Maryland in the east to Sacramento, California in the West. Originally part of the U.S. Highway system created in 1926, it was a major transportation route until the creation of the Interstate Highway system in 1956. In 1986, Life Magazine nicknamed the Nevada portion of Route 50 “The Loneliest Road in America,” noting that it is “America minus tourist traps” with only three small towns in 400 miles of empty desert.
I wanted to experience “The Loneliest Road in America” for myself, so I drove west to east from Carson City to the small town of Baker near the Nevada-Utah border. While it is true that the route is pretty desolate, its winding mountain passes and long, open stretches of desert valleys tell the story of a time in American history dominated by Manifest Destiny, Westward Expansion and a Gold Rush. U.S. Route 50 parallels the iconic Pony Express route and you can visit the remains of a few outpost stations to this day. Just off Route 50 in the east, in between the cities of Ely and Baker, lies the beautiful Great Basin National Park – home to the mesmerizing Lehman Caves.

America's Loneliest Highway Is Not Highway 50. (HD, Go Pro)
Highway 50 in the US is not the most remote or loneliest highway in the US, Indian route 59 in Arizona is far less traveled.
Highway 50 is well know at this point and is a well traveled road by many tourists. It is a great drive and I have done it but I would not call it lonely.

Mylungpuppy is the channel of musician Ron Anderson.
I have been making avant-music for over forty years in a number of different projects; PAK, The Molecules, RonRuins, Oblique Quartet and numerous collaborations and solo. I combine composition and improvisation exploring the regions where they intersect. Sometimes my music is brutal, but I’m not afraid of melody, in general my work is pretty much out there.
The main focus of my channel is music, but I also make vlogs on various subjects, cycling, touring and traveling, vegan food, rare vinyl LPs, audio field recordings, etc. Because not everyone is going to be interested in all the subjects covered on this channel, I have made playlists so you do not have to search through videos to find what you are looking for.
I try to answer questions and respond to as many comments as I can, any and all feedback from you is welcome.
I'm trying to make at least one or two new videos a week.
US Highway 50, Loneliest Road in America
I drove from Sacramento CA to Colorado Springs CO taking US Highway 50. The section of highway between Silver Springs NV to Ely, NV is often called the loneliest road in America. I drove near 350 miles, mostly have the road all by myself. It is a long drive, but I do enjoy the quiet time to immerse myself to the natural beauty . Hope you can take this drive, when you have the opportunity.
Loneliest Road in America
Recorded June 4, 2019
The most famous segment of U.S. Highway 50 is largely useless, running through Nevada about 100 or so miles south of Interstate 80, which is what sane people use today to travel the state. And yet this 287-mile stretch of highway has attained legendary status as the Loneliest Road in America. The designation was made by Life magazine in 1986 and has stuck, in good part because Nevada tourism authorities recognized what the acolytes of ruin porn have long known about the strange magic desolation works on the human spirit. There are, today, Loneliest Road signs along the road, and some stores in the sparse towns along Route 50 display I survived Route 50 signs in windows covered with geologic layers of grime.
Shortly after sunrise I depart Ely and set out across Nevada on this desolate stretch of highway. The index below contains the details of my adventure...

Timelapse Drive - US Route 50 Nevada Loneliest Highway
This is a timelapse drive along US Route 50 from Fernley to Ely Nevada. The drive takes about 5 hours, but for this video it's compressed down to 9 and a half minutes. A bit of electronica music accompanies the video to set the mood. Once we get out of Fallon, you'll see why it's called the loneliest highway. Filmed by Michael Adams. Enjoy the scenery.
Not quite sure why all the thumbs down, maybe because it's the crap music I chose...and these people don't have volume controls on their speakers or haven't found the mute button on the video...or maybe it's just too damn fast.
Nevada Road Trip - A Journey down America's Loneliest Road
Join us on a journey down what Life Magazine called the loneliest Road in America in their July 1986 article about the stretch of HWY 50 between Salt Lake City and Sacramento. 30 years later #TravelNevada asked us to come out and experience it for ourselves.
What we found was a photographer's paradise, full of random pull-offs and unexpected beauty. As the name kinda indicates there wasn't much traffic on this road, but like any good road trip, if you have good company inside the car and cool stuff to see, that's all you need.
Most scenes we shot on or near HWY 50 - or - on or near HWY 80 in Northern Nevada.

Did We Finish The Highway 50 Challenge in Nevada? - Road Trip Vlog 20
Visiting Fallon, Fernley, Dayton and Carson City, Nevada to finish our Highway 50, The Loneliest Road in America Challenge. See it at:
After leaving Austin, Neek, Sar and I drove back on to Highway 50 and motored through the expansive beauty of Nevada. It was around 2pm and while we had driven through half of The Loneliest Road in America, we still had four more stamps to get to complete our booklet and receive our certificate of completion. We were a bit concerned that since some of the places that do stamping might close at 5pm, we would have to hurry to reach our goal.
110 miles (180 kilometers) later, we reached our next destination, the town of Fallon. It is called the Oasis of Nevada and can trace its roots back to the California Gold Rush as well as the Pony Express. There is agricultural importance there due to the Newlands Project at the turn of the century, the first land reclamation project in the United States through which diverted water from the Truckee and Carson rivers gave life to Fallon ranches.
Currently, Fallon is the headquarters for the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center, known better as TOPGUN. While the Grimes Point Petroglyph Trail seven miles to the east containing carvings by native peoples as much as 8,000 years old sounds fascinating, we only had time to stop at a Maverik gas station to get our stamp. We saw some interesting looking casinos in town, but once we got our stamps we hit the road!

Strange Creepy Town Near Area 51 - Semi Abandoned Town in Nevada Desert - The REAL Loneliest Road!
I decided to finally take a remote back-road trick route I'd always wanted to try bypassing Tonopah on the way up from Las Vegas to Reno, Nevada. Wow, what a strange trip! A little single lane road in the middle of nowhere complete with a bizarre, sort of spooky and creepy (in a way), semi-ghost town! One of the oddest abandoned places we've seen in our years of desert travel. In over 2 hours of driving we saw not ONE other car...nor a single human being. Even when driving through the little town itself. Abandoned cars, trucks..even abandoned soda machines! But not a soul did we see! Haha..I thought being so close to area 51...maybe the aliens abducted everyone! Looks kinda like Fallout New Vegas or Nuketown. a scene straight from GTA! This is why we LOVE Nevada!! No place like it on Earth! ~Kenneth King Bear

Great Basin National Park -- Adventure on America's Loneliest Road in Nevada
Great Basin National Park is a real stunner located on I50 -- America's Loneliest Road -- in Nevada's Basin and Range. The scenery ranges from the desert floor, to centuries old bristlecone pines, to pristine glacial lakes, to wonderful waterfalls, to a palatial glacial cirque, to towering mountaintops. The hikes vary from easy to strenuous. In fact, the Wheeler Peak hike looks easy until you're actually on the trail. After a mile, the surface becomes broken rock, then (at least when we were there in July) a little snow. The last mile of very sharp switchbacks take you straight up to the peak. The reward, as you'll see in this video, is enormously worth it, but it's best for people who are fit and can cope with the reduced oxygen at 13,159 feet. When you visit, absolutely set aside time for the Lehman Cave tour, too. The stalactites, stalagmites and shield formations rival the finest sculpture and the park service tour guides are cheery and knowledgable. Camping in Great Basin National Park was a thrill that we plan to repeat next summer and every time we find ourselves on America's Loneliest Road. Larry Richardson created this video for RichardsonArtPhotographyStore.com using an iPhone 7 and iMovie.
