Darjeeling Sandakphu Trek - The best trekking destination in Darjeeling, India. | #sandakphutrek
When people hear about Darjeeling, most think of the famous tea plantations. If they know more about the area, they might think of Darjeeling as a jumping off point for mountain treks in Sikkim. Little do people know that just a short drive from Darjeeling lie some of the greatest trails in India. Several days of hiking/walking/trekking around Darjeeling will leave you with a positive lasting impression of this natural dreamland.
Where else in the world can you get a sweeping view of four out of the five highest peaks in the world? From the summit of Sandakphu (3636 meters / 11,929 feet), Mount Everest (8848 meteres), Kanchenjunga (8586 meters), Lhotse (8516 meters), and Makalu (8481 meters) can be seen in all their majesty. Each of our treks visit Sandakhpu – the highlight of trekking in Darjeeling.
Singalila National Park is a nature lover’s paradise. Feel the cool mountain air as you are surrounded by rhododendron, orchid, pine and bamboo trees. In fact, there are over 600 varieties of orchids in the area! These lush forests are home to a diverse group of wildlife. Dispersed along the trails, you might run into the elusive red panda, leopard, barking deer, Himalayan black bar, serow, takin, and countless other wonderful species.
As is the case with all treks, you will have an authentic cultural experience with the locals in each passing village. Eat the same food as those who live in the area, while learning about their customs, culture, and everyday lifestyle. The mountain views are part of the adventure, but spending time with Gurung, Rai, Limbu, and other fascinating ethnic groups adds much cultural value to the journey. Also, nothing beats finishing a long day of trekking and being greeted with a hot plate of dal bhaat (traditional meal) and a glass of chhang (local rice beer).
Ashmita Trek and Tours offers trekking packages for all types of trekkers. Even if you have no trekking experience, we will show you the time of your life on a beautiful mountainside trail. Besides, none of the trails in Darjeeling are too strenuous for even a beginner.
The best time to trek in Darjeeling is during the spring time (March to May) and autumn (September to November), though we do lead treks throughout the year. However, the eerie cloud patterns and lack of tourists make trekking during the summer months quite an experience. Also, winter offers cooler temperatures, but bright blue skies.

TREKKING TO TIGERHILL - DARJEELING, INDIA // CHALLENGE 365
So we decided to make the walk to Tiger Hill in Darjeeling for the 'view'. Unfortunately by the time we got there, there wasn't much of a view left!
Still the walk was loads of fun and glad I did it!
For anyone that wants to see the view of the surrounding mountains, the best time to go is for sunrise - just get a jeep instead!

Darjeeling, India - Travel Guide and Attractions
Check out my Darjeeling travel guide here - | Have Facebook?
Darjeeling, India, is located in the very Northern part of the West Bengal state. Coming from Kolkata, it's hard to believe that Darjeeling is actually in the same state, it's such a vastly different place.
In order to get to Darjeeling, India, it's easiest to take the train to the nearest station which is located at New Jalpaiguri (known just as NJP by the train code). There's little to do in NJP, but from right outside the train station you can then board to a shared jeep and for 200 Rupees, you can take the jeep straight to Darjeeling. The jeep normally takes about 4 hours to reach the town and they will often stop for a few bathroom and snack breaks. The ride to Darjeeling is very windy and very uphill into the mountains, so if you get sick easily, be sure to take motion sickness medication. You will have some amazing views on the road!
Darjeeling, India, is an old hill station that offers beautiful views of the Himalayas. It's a small town and unlike other huge Indian cities, it's much quieter, peaceful, and it's a very nice place to just explore on foot (though not all the attractions are accessible on foot). So after arriving in Darjeeling, I first set off to explore the Chowrasta Square, which is a non-vehicle area with shops restaurants and cafes. There are also many trails leading from the square to other parts of the town. I explored a few of the footpaths leading in various directions to discover Buddhist Tibetan temples and other residential areas.
Probably the most famous thing about Darjeeling, India, is its production of tea; It's one of the most famous places in the world for tea. The climate, elevation, and rich Himalayan soil make it prime growing conditions. Surrounding Darjeeling you'll have a chance to see rolling tea fields and if you have time you can even visit a tea farm such as Happy Valley. Don't forget to buy plenty of tea in Darjeeling before you depart.
At the top of the main hill in Darjeeling is the Mahakal Temple, one of the most famous Hindu / Buddhist temples in the city. The temple is fully decorated by Tibetan colorful flags and there are lots and lots of monkeys, that can at times be aggressive. You can also walk around the area and explore the cave. Just be careful of the scammers in this area that try to ask you for donations. Another one of the most famous attractions in Darjeeling, India, is the Darjeeling Himalayan railroad which is better known as the Toy Train. It's an old locomotive train that runs of burning coal. You can go to the railroad station and purchase tickets daily for the joy ride, which is a 1.5 hour circuit that takes you on a leisurely ride from Darjeeling to Ghoom, the highest elevation railroad station in all of India. The railroad is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Tibetan Refugee Self Help Center is a center for Tibetan refugees where you'll find handicrafts and other things to purchase. When I went it was quite quiet and there actually wasn't much to do there. Other really popular attractions in Darjeeling, India, include the Himalayan Zoo and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, which are located on the same compound and accessed with the same entrance ticket fee. The zoo was interesting and included a snow leopard and lots of red pandas. The mountaineering institute is a museum that houses many artifacts from Himalayan mountain climbing expeditions.
While many choose to wake up and go to Tiger Hill for the sunrise of the beautiful Himalayan mountain range, I was so cold that I didn't wake up and just stayed on the balcony of my hotel to view the gorgeous sunrise over the mountains. Darjeeling, India, is a beautiful little town and you'll have a great and relaxing time when you travel there!

DARJEELING & SIKKIM PART 1 OF 5
The forgotten history of Darjeeling.
Darjeeling hill town is located at an altitude of 6,710ft in north east India and is part of the state of West Bengal. The nearest airport is Bagdogra and the nearest major railway junction is New Jalpaiguri (NJP). It takes about 4 hours to reach Darjeeling from both these locations by car. Private taxis (available at NJP and Bagdogra), shared taxis (available at NJP) and bus (from Siliguri bus stand, only 8kms from NJP) are the main public transports to reach Darjeeling from NJP station or Bagdogra airport.

Within Darjeeling town area, you can walk to visit several tourist attractions. Plenty of taxis (which are private commercial vehicles of various types - small & large) are available at the stands. They offer both local sightseeing tours as well as point-to-point transfers. You can also get shared taxis (mainly Jeep type vehicles) at the stands, but they are mostly available for transfers and sometimes for tours.

Darjeeling is a town and a municipality in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is located in the Lesser Himalayas at an elevation of 6,700 ft (2,042.2 m). It is noted for its tea industry, the spectacular views of Kangchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain, and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Darjeeling is the headquarters of Darjeeling district which has a partially autonomous status within the state of West Bengal. It is also a popular tourist destination in India.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway connects the town with the plains and has some of the few steam locomotives still in service in India.
The recorded history of the town starts from the early 19th century when the colonial administration under the British Raj set up a sanatorium and a military depot in the region. Subsequently, extensive tea plantations were established in the region and tea growers developed hybrids of black tea and created new fermentation techniques. The resultant distinctive Darjeeling tea is internationally recognised and ranks among the most popular black teas in the world.
Darjeeling has several British-style public schools, which attract pupils from India and neighbouring countries. The varied culture of the town reflects its diverse demographic milieu consisting of Nepali, Sherpas, Lepcha and other mainland Indian ethno-linguistic groups. Darjeeling, alongside its neighbouring town of Kalimpong, was the centre of the Gorkhaland movement in the 1980s. The town's fragile ecology has been threatened by a rising demand for environmental resources, stemming from growing tourist traffic and poorly planned urbanisation.
Darjeeling is a small town and the salubrious climate means walks around town are an extremely enjoyable means of getting around. For longer trips, taxis are available in stands near the entrance to the Mall.
Taxis and travel agents sell various tour packages based on points which are simply the number of attractions covered. A 7-point package includes seven places to visit such as the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute/Zoo, Cable Car, Peace Pagoda, etc and takes about 5 hours to complete with the driver waiting at each attraction. Price in April 2014 was Rs. 1,200 for a dedicated car. Numerous taxis also sell Local Sightseeing trips on a shared basis with up to 10 travelers, in a Tata Sumo or Mahindra Bolero SUV.
Point-to-point dedicated taxi rides start at Rs. 150 for even short distances. The most economical way is to flag a shared taxi. Rides are Rs. 10 for short distances and Rs. 20 for longer distances. Traffic jams are common especially around the mall and bus station areas. It may be easier to walk rather than sit in a crowded taxi.
A great way to spend a day is to take a shared-jeep to Ghoom (the next town up the ridge), visit some monasteries there and walk back to Darjeeling via some of the villages.

Exploring parts of Gangtok | Our First Trip TOGETHER ♥
We planned an impromptu trip to the Himalayas and it was so special for a 100 reasons!
We only booked one way tickets, no itinerary, packed minimal clothing(I swear I wore the same pants for 7 days hahaa ) and lots of enthusiasm. It was so much fun inspite of all the mishaps ( I fell sick because of the ghats & felt nauseous during the entire trip).
Our initial plan was to also visit Kalimpong, and stay there for a couple of days but that requires a few more days on hand, which we didn't have. So we stuck to just exploring Gangtok as much as we could.
I had great fun vlogging and editing this video. Watch and let me know what you think too! Love love x
