13 Observation tower on Wielka Sowa
Wielka Sowa, which means the Great Owl, is the highest mountain in the Owl Mountains. Its height is 1014 metres. Originally, there used to be a wooden tower on its top, whose construction was initiated by the Owl Mountains Society in 1885. The cornerstone was laid on 20 September 1885. It was the highest wooden observation tower in the Owl Mountains. Due to high costs of the upkeep and maintenance, the tower had to be dismantled in 1904, but plans for a new one were already underway. Only this time it was to be made of concrete.
The new tower was built on the very peak of the mountain, some 30 metres north of the original location. It is 25 metres high with a radius of 8 metres at the base and 4 metres at the top. The construction was also initiated by the Owl Mountains Society. Unfortunately, subsequent political instability and the two World Wars eventually led to its decay. Although every then and again a hope for renovation appeared, all that could be accomplished for long years was just temporary, provisional repairs to keep the tower from collapsing.
It was only in 2006 that the local authorities, who are the legal owners of the tower, managed to undertake a major renovation. The tower affords an extensive view in each direction. Looking from the observation deck, you can enjoy a panorama of both the Sudetes and Kłodzko Land. On a clear day the view extends as far as the towns of Sobótka and Świdnica and Mount Śnieżka, even though it lies 60 kilometres away. The tower is open for use by visitors.
