Bomb-Making Material In Student's Car
A mountain student is suspended after bomb making materials and a weapon were discovered inside his vehicle at Swain County High School.Investigators say mailboxes along Alarka Road were blown up this week. One mailbox had been hit really hard and smashed. The guy around the corner from us. His mailbox is totally gone, said resident Cindy Grant. The investigation led police to the high school, where they discovered several items inside a student's vehicle in the parking lot.It was found that it obtained a shotgun, some ammunition and some remnants of what they were making their explosive devices out of, said Steve Claxton with the Swain County School system.Claxton says according to school policy, the student was immediately suspended for 10 days. He says additional penalties could come pending the outcome of an investigation. The sheriff's office says fellow students were never in danger and there was no lockdown. But their parents were notified to let them know what had happened.Neither the sheriff's office nor the school system is releasing names at this point.Charges are pending an investigation by an independent special prosecutor in Raleigh.A Swain County deputy and a Bryson City police officer also had their mailboxes vandalized.By Rex HodgeFollow Rex on Twitter @RexHodgeWLOS

Dramatic Evidence Presented In Murder Trial
Dramatic evidence was presented Friday in the murder trial of a Graham County man. Clifford Williams is charged with fatally shooting Shannon Sawyer in 2009. Sawyer's body was found inside a barrel in a Tennessee sinkhole in 2011. Jurors were taken to see that barrel in Robbinsville.
Williams was in a relationship with Brittany Moose at the time of murder. She also faces first-degree murder charges in Sawyer's death. Williams' attorney says she's the one who pulled the trigger.
Our defense throughout this case has been, that while certainly unfortunate Mr. Sawyer was killed, it was not our client who did it, said Frank Lay.
A third suspect in the case, Stevie Lee Franklin, lived close to where Sawyer's body was discovered in Tennessee. Authorities there charged him with abuse of a corpse. North Carolina authorities charged him with accessory to murder.
Prosecutors are presenting evidence in court. An expert witness testified about the barrel and why no fingerprints were lifted from it.
It was buried 35 feet in the ground. Had dirt all over it. It was dirty, said Shannon Ashe, a Special Agent with the State Bureau of Investigation.
Defense attorney Frank Lay is looking carefully at autopsy testimony.
Relative to the wound track that occurred from the shots, it is completely inconsistent with the testimony given my Miss. Moose. And we'll have some definite issues to talk about with that when the time comes, said Lay.
Brittany Moose's murder trial will take place after Williams' case is over. His trial resumes Monday morning.

The Bugling of the Elk in the NC Smokies!
The Bugling of the Elk in the NC Smokies!
Cataloochee Valley is one of the most remote and most beautiful areas of the park, and a unique place to explore both the natural and cultural history of the Smokies. Once a populous settlement and mountain community, Cataloochee Valley is perhaps now best known for elk, which were reintroduced in the valley in 2001 after disappearing from North Carolina in the late 1700s as a result of over-hunting and loss of habitat. Early morning and late evening are regarded as the best times for viewing the elk (usually as they graze along the roads and in the meadows). Other wildlife, including black bear, white-tailed deer and wild turkeys, also roam the area. Cataloochee Valley is rich in history; with original homesteads still standing (tour a school, churches, a barn, and several homes), learn what life was like for early settlers of the area. There's also plenty of hiking, camping and fishing to be had here, so make sure a trip to Cataloochee Valley is on your itinerary while visiting Haywood County.
