The comedy It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) included several scenes shot in Santa Monica, including those along the California Incline, which led to the movie's treasure spot, The Big W. Iron Man features the Santa Monica pier and surrounding communities as Tony Stark tests his experimental flight suit.
History of Santa Monica, California
Santa Monica was long inhabited by the Tongva people. Santa Monica was called Kecheek in the Tongva language.
The first non-indigenous group to set foot in the area was the party of explorer Gaspar de Portolà, who camped near the present-day intersection of Barrington and Ohio Avenues on August 3, 1769. Named after the Christian saint Monica, there are two different accounts of how the city's name came to be. One says it was named in honor of the feast day of Saint Monica (mother of Saint Augustine), but her feast day is May 4. Another version says it was named by Juan Crespí on account of a pair of springs, the Kuruvungna Springs (Serra Springs), that were reminiscent of the tears Saint Monica shed over her son's early impiety
In Los Angeles, several battles were fought by the Californios.
Following the Mexican–American War, Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which gave Mexicans and Californios living in state certain unalienable rights. US government sovereignty in California began on February 2, 1848.
In the 1870s the Los Angeles and Independence Railroad, connected Santa Monica with Los Angeles, and a wharf out into the bay. The first town hall was a modest 1873 brick building, later a beer hall, and now part of the Santa Monica Hostel.
It is Santa Monica's oldest extant structure. By 1885, the town's first hotel was the Santa Monica Hotel.
Amusement piers became enormously popular in the first decades of the 20th century and the extensive Pacific Electric Railroad brought people to the city's beaches from across the Greater Los Angeles
Around the start of the 20th century, a growing population of Asian Americans lived in and around Santa Monica and Venice. A Japanese fishing village was near the Long Wharf while small numbers of Chinese lived or worked in Santa Monica and Venice. The two ethnic minorities were often viewed differently by White Americans who were often well-disposed towards the Japanese but condescending towards the Chinese.

Planning a trip to Los Angeles? Make sure to allot plenty of time for Santa Monica Beach. Between the beach itself, the boardwalk, the pier, the aquarium, the carnival games, and the famous solar-powered Ferris wheel, there's plenty to see and do there. Learn more about it in this travel video.
If you’re visiting in the summer -- or really any time of year -- a trip to Los Angeles wouldn’t be complete without some beach time, and the Santa Monica State Beach is one of the most popular beaches.
It may not be a private, secluded beach, but the lively atmosphere more than make up for that.
Biking, tennis, basketball, swimming, surfing, and beach volleyball are all popular here -- and you can rent everything you need and even take lessons right on the beach.
If you’re not into athletics, relax in the ocean breeze and work on your tan -- or visit Chess Park, where you can play regular chess or act as a game piece on the giant chess board.
The Santa Monica Beach is also great if you’re traveling with children; the beach is safe and clean with playgrounds scattered throughout. You also can’t miss Santa Monica Pier, where you’ll find carnival games, treats and rides -- including a solar powered Ferris wheel that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. While you’re on the Pier, check out the Aquarium for an up-close look at some of Santa Monica Bay’s native marine life.
No matter what sort of beach day you’re looking for, Santa Monica Beach offers the classic American beach experience!

Santa Monica Pier - Things to Do in Santa Monica | California Travel Tips
In this episode of California Travel Tips, I'll show you the sights and attractions of Santa Monica Pier — one of the best things to do in Santa Monica! Santa Monica Pier is one of the West Coast's oldest pleasure piers, dating back to 1909. Pacific Park is one of the best Santa Monica attractions, serving up all kinds of family fun — from carnival-style boardwalk amusements to fast moving roller coasters. It's the West Coast's only amusement park located on a pier.
Be sure to ride on the Pacific Wheel — the world's first solar-powered Ferris wheel — then hop aboard the West Coaster, which travels 35 miles per hour around the pier. At the Playland Arcade, you can play vintage video games or get your fortune told by Zoltar, a famous icon from the movie Big.
While you're touring Santa Monica Pier, be sure to take a spin on the 1922 carousel, which was featured in Paul Newman's movie, The Sting. Featuring 44 hand-carved horses, the Santa Monica Pier carousel is located inside the historic Santa Monica Loof Hippodrome, which was built in 1916. Downstairs, at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium run by Heal the Bay, you can get a close-up look at moon jellies, moray eels and other Pacific ocean sea life.
Most Santa Monica Pier restaurants serve up typical fun park fare — ranging from funnel cakes and churros to Dippin' Dots and Icees. There are several full service restaurants on the pier, or you can head down to the Santa Monica boardwalk for a Hot Dog on a Stick, an icon here since 1946. (This was the first restaurant in the famous chain.)
Bring your circus dreams to life at the Trapeze School of New York, or rent a bike for a leisurely ride to Venice Beach. The South Bay Bicycle Trail in Santa Monica is the world's longest beach cycling path, stretching 22 miles from Torrance to Malibu.
Santa Monica Muscle Beach dates back to the 1930s. This outdoor gym, which was a favorite hangout for Jack LaLane, is credited as being the birthplace of America's fitness boom. All of the equipment here is free to use, from the rings and bars to the tightropes. The Muscle Beach in Venice Beach now caters to the weight lifting crowd.
Just across the way is International Chess Park, which boasts a human-size chessboard and a variety of free permanent tables.

Santa Monica State Beach is a California State Park operated by the city of Santa Monica.
The beach is located along Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica. It is 3.5 miles long and has parks, picnic areas, playgrounds, restrooms, as well as manned lifeguard stations, the original Muscle Beach, bike rentals, concessions, a few hotels, a bike path, and wooden pathways for warm days and beachgoers with disabilities. Visitor activities include volleyball, surfing, stand up paddleboarding, and swimming. Smoking at the beach is prohibited.
At the foot of Colorado Avenue, through the famous arch and sign, lies the historic Santa Monica Pier, which dates from 1909. The pier has a National Historic Landmark -– the 1922 Looff Hippodrome Carousel.
A few steps south of the Pier volleyball courts is the International Chess Park. The public chess tables—and a human-scale chessboard set into the sidewalk—draw a wide assortment of players.

Los Angeles City Tour & Attractions in California USA

Driving on Santa Monica Boulevard from beginning to the end. Dash Cam Tours ????
Drive through Los Angeles in GTA V:
This video tour was recorded on Friday, July 26, 2019
Santa Monica Boulevard is a major west-east thoroughfare in Los Angeles County.
It runs from Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica near the Pacific Ocean to Sunset Boulevard at Sunset Junction in Los Angeles.
It passes through Beverly Hills and West Hollywood.
A portion of it is designated as California State Route 2.
The western terminus of Santa Monica Boulevard is at Ocean Avenue near the Pacific Ocean. From there until the San Diego Freeway (Interstate 405), Santa Monica Boulevard is a densely urban commercial street. It assumes the designation California State Route 2 between Centinela Avenue at the Santa Monica–Los Angeles border, and the Hollywood Freeway (U.S. Route 101).
The portion between Centinela Avenue and Lincoln Boulevard in Santa Monica was also originally part of California State Route 2.
From Centinela Avenue, Santa Monica Boulevard heads northeast through the wealthy areas of West Los Angeles, Westwood, Century City, and Beverly Hills before entering the decidedly urban West Hollywood.
Santa Monica Boulevard, being a major street, is for most of its length at least four lanes wide.
Most of the Westside car dealerships are located on Santa Monica Boulevard.
After Sepulveda Boulevard, Santa Monica Boulevard passes by Century City and its shopping center, and intersects with Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
After intersecting with Wilshire in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica Boulevard continues northeast towards West Hollywood, spanning Beverly Boulevard and Melrose Avenue.
At Holloway Drive, in the middle of West Hollywood, Santa Monica, now north of Melrose Avenue turns to run east.
In West Hollywood, between Doheny Drive and Fairfax Avenue along Santa Monica Boulevard, bronze name plaques are embedded in the sidewalks as part of the West Hollywood Memorial Walk.
The original southern end of California State Route 170 was at the intersection with Highland Avenue. Santa Monica
Boulevard merges on its eastern end with Sunset Boulevard in the Sunset Junction neighborhood of Silver Lake.
The south roadway of Santa Monica Boulevard, often called Little Santa Monica Boulevard in Beverly Hills, runs parallel to the state highway (north) roadway of Santa Monica Boulevard from the city's west limit to Rexford Drive.
After Rexford Drive, Little Santa Monica turns east, becoming Burton Way. Burton Way merges into San Vicente Boulevard at its intersection with La Cienega Boulevard.
It is noted that the south roadway of Santa Monica Boulevard in Beverly Hills is a city street while the north roadway of Santa Monica Boulevard is a California state highway, each roadway handling bi-directional traffic.
Due to the length of its name, Santa Monica Boulevard is often abbreviated to Sta Mon Blvd. for mailing purposes, specifically by the United States Postal Service.
