By. Trahan Architects
The Louisiana State Museum and Sports Hall of Fame in historic Natchitoches merges two contrasting collections formerly housed in a university coliseum and a nineteenth century courthouse, elevating the visitor experience for both. Set in the oldest settlement in the Louisiana Purchase on the banks of the Cane River Lake, the design mediates the dialogue between sports and history, past and future, container and contained. The museum is configured to interpret athletics as a component of cultural history. While sports and regional history may appeal to different audiences, the exhibits and configuration explore interconnections between the two. The spaces flow visually and physically together, arranged to accommodate state-of-the-art exhibits, education, and assembly and support functions. The internal organization is an extension of the existing meandering urban circulation. The pathway branches throughout the first level galleries and classrooms, and winds its way upward, concluding at a veranda overlooking and reconnecting to the historic town square.
Historical pastiche is set aside in favor of a design language inspired by the riverfront setting and the 17th century bousillage found in the region. The exterior cladding of pleated copper panels alludes to the nearby plantations, controlling light, views and ventilation, and employing surface articulation rather than architectural ornamentation. The simple urban container contrasts with the sinuous entry and foyer within, highlighting the dialogue between the city and the natural environment.
The flowing interior emerges at the entry, contrasting with the patinated exterior shell, inviting the visitor within. The dynamic foyer reflects the carving of the ancient river's fluvial geomorphology. Sculpted out of 1,100 digitally milled cast stone panels, the shaped surfaces seamlessly integrate all building systems. Washed during the day by natural light from above, they also serve as screens for films and exhibits, further merging content and context.

The Discovery of a Prehistoric Caddo Dugout
North Americans often used dugouts like this one for transportation and as platforms for hunting and fishing. From AD 900 – 1200, the early Caddo people lived near the Red River. They travelled in dugouts to ceremonial sites along the river.
The Bald Cypress Caddo dugout displayed at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum carbon dates to A.D. 1005 – 1065, making it approximately 1000 years old. It measures 30 ft. 8 in., the longest excavated dugout west of the Mississippi River.
In 1983, John Paul Hobbs, Rose Mary, Kendall and Kevin Kelly discovered the LSEM dugout on the banks of the Red River, north of Mounds Plantation, a Caddo Ceremonial Site.
This is their story.

Spanish Lake Contamination, Limiting Incomes, Museum | 1/11/19 | LSWI
A story as familiar to Louisiana as our humidity continues to play out in an area about 30 miles southeast of Baton Rouge. The Spanish Lake sub basin, an ecological jewel, became the workplace of big oil over 80 years ago. One group says that Shell Oil Company drilling has caused salt kills and aquifer contamination. Shell saying it’s not their fault. Andre Moreau talks with Scott Nesbit, Wetland Ecologist, Specialist in the Field and Patrick Courreges, Dept. Of Natural Resources, about the situation.
A report is out this week putting a spotlight on a big number of people in the state who work hard at Low Paying jobs. They have little or no savings and are one emergency from falling into poverty. The ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) report details this information. Sarah Berthelot, Head of the Louisiana Association of United Ways, outlines the details and explains why it’s important that every Louisianan understand this news.
Completed in 1939 as part of the new deal’s public works projects, the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum in Shreveport is an architectural jewel built in the ultra-modern style of the time. The museum offers all sorts of fascinating dioramas depicting life in these lands across the centuries. Curator Nita Cole introduces us to many of the museum’s most fascinating exhibits, some of which are not actually dioramas at all.

Louisiana is a southeastern U.S. state on the Gulf of Mexico. Its history as a melting pot of French, African, American and French-Canadian cultures is reflected in its Creole and Cajun cultures. The largest city, New Orleans, is known for its colonial-era French Quarter, raucous Mardi Gras festival, jazz music, Renaissance-style St. Louis Cathedral and wartime exhibits at the huge National WWII Museum.
