Great Getaways: Lumberman's Monument - Tawas, MI
From Great Getaways #913 Fall Color in Tawas Motorcycle Tour Tawas, Michigan

The Lumberman's Monument was erected in 1931 as a lasting memorial to the lumbermen that harvested Michigan's giant white pine. A 14 foot bronze statue overlooks the beautiful Au Sable River. The three figures represent various stages of the historic lumbering operation. In the center, the timber cruiser holds a compass, to his left, a sawyer holds an ax and cross-cut saw. On the right, is the river rat using a peavey.

Great Getaways: Tawas Bay Pedestrian & Bicycle Path - Tawas, MI
clip from the Great Getaways television program.

With the opening of a brand new section of paved, non-motorized trail way through Alabaster Township last fall, the Tawas Bay Pedestrian and Bicycle Path now extends some 10 miles along Michigan's Lake Huron shoreline. It offers a safe and scenic, off-highway route that shadows US-23 through Tawas and East Tawas, ending at one-of-a-kind Tawas Point State Park.
Let's Visit the Lumberman's Monument
This video shows the area around the Lumberman's Monument about ten miles (not exact I don't think) north of Tawas City, MI. I show the monument itself as well as views of the Au Sable River basin after going down about 260 steps. You can probably tell that I am out of breath at the end of the video as I had to go all the way back to the top!
Alabaster Fly Over
It took me all summer, but I was able to get at least one decent video of the Alabaster loading dock. I'm hoping to be back next weekend for a closer look. Original video had cooler music, but youtube copyright issues stopped it.

The park's expansive day-use beach offers acres of glistening white sugar sand, sprinkled with patches of dune grass and backed by low dunes on the Lake Huron side. Come to find out, Tawas Point apparently also happens to be one of the best locations in the country -- maybe in the world -- to experience the growing extreme sport of kite-boarding. The jewel of the park is Tawas Point Lighthouse, built in 1876. It is the only working model of Victorian-era light stations still in operation on the Great Lakes; and to walk through this historic structure and ascend its winding iron staircase is truly to step back in time.

Unbelievable Polar Bear Ice Swim PERCHVILLE, USA East Tawas Michigan #UpNorth
It's Always a Great Day #UpNorth On Cedar Lake at The Good Times Family Cabin and NETs Cancer Retreat in Oscoda Township Michigan along the historical Au Sable River Valley.
EAST TAWAS – Mother Nature pulled through at the last moment to ensure a comfortable experience was had by attendees of the 69th annual Perchville USA winter festival.
Bitter cold, poor driving conditions and significant snowfall pummeled the Tawases in the days leading up to Perchville. But, as the excitement rose for the event, so too did the temperatures.
There was still a chilly bite in the air on Saturday, but temperatures ultimately reached the mid-20s and the weather was much more pleasant than it had been in recent days. The event was graced with an even warmer day on the Feb. 3 festival finale.
Hosted by the Tawas Area Chamber of Commerce, the four-day celebration began on Jan. 31 with the Royal Feast at Mr. Jack’ss Sports Bar & Grill.
The DNR boat launch in East Tawas was a popular stop for festival goers, as well, with a huge crowd forming Saturday afternoon for the first round of Polar Bear Plunges.
Once again, the divers didn’t disappoint as they leapt into Lake Huron through a hole cut in the ice – while bringing along fun props and donning colorful wigs and costumes.
Overseen by members of U.S. Coast Guard Station Tawas, Polar Bear Plunge participants all earned a keepsake T-shirt to remember their brave act.
