Much of the city is at some risk from lava flows from Mauna Loa. The majority of human settlement in Hilo stretches from Hilo Bay to Waiākea-Uka, on the flanks of Mauna Loa.
Hilo is home to the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, ʻImiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaiʻi, as well as the Merrie Monarch Festival, a week-long celebration of ancient and modern hula which takes place annually after Easter. Hilo is also home to the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporation, one of the world's leading producers of macadamia nuts. The town is served by Hilo International Airport.[3]

Hurricane Lane is currently a very powerful tropical cyclone approaching the Hawaiian Islands, the strongest hurricane in the central Pacific since Ioke in 2006, and the first Category 5 Pacific hurricane since Patricia in 2015. The twelfth named storm, sixth hurricane, and fourth major hurricane of the 2018 Pacific hurricane season, Lane originated from a tropical wave that began producing disorganized thunderstorm activity several hundred miles off the southern coast of Mexico on August 11. Over the next four days, the disturbance gradually strengthened amid favorable weather conditions and formed a tropical depression early on August 15. Twelve hours later, the depression intensified into Tropical Storm Lane. Gradual strengthening occurred for the next day and a half which resulted in Lane reaching hurricane status by August 17. Lane then began a period of rapid intensification, becoming a high-end Category 2 hurricane on the same day. Lane continued to rapidly intensify, reaching Category 4 status twelve hours later. Lane reached its initial peak with winds of 140 mph (220 km/h) and a pressure of 948 mbar (27.99 inHg) on August 18. On August 19, Lane crossed into the Central Pacific basin, where it encountered increasing wind shear, subsequently weakening the storm. However, on August 20, Lane re-intensified into a Category 4 hurricane, and reached Category 5 intensity early on August 22.

If you are renting a vehicle, your hosts encourage you to rent locally, and recommend to rent an AWD vehicle or 4x4 - it will give you far more flexibility for your island adventures; scaling the Mauna Kea summit, visiting Waipio Valley and some of the wilder beaches and beauty spots.
The home is set on a traditional Hawaii bumpy lava-rock trail - 0.5 miles off paved road in one direction and 0.7 miles in the other, so your 4x4 will make the drive home easier.

Harpers Rental in Hilo rent new 4x4s - we've had good rental experiences with them. The the bigger car rental companies rent soft-top jeeps which are great fun for island driving (be sure to book them well in advance).
A TV and DVD player are available and, usually, access to wireless internet and Netflix, although the last two are dependent on the local service being available and are not always reliable. There is excellent 4G service in the area and most smart phones work to pick up wireless internet independent of the WiFi.

Hawaii is the most recent of the 50 U.S. states (joined the Union on August 21, 1959), and is the only U.S. state made up entirely of islands. It is the northernmost island group in Polynesia, occupying most of an archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean.
The Hawaiian Islands (Hawaiian: Mokupuni o Hawai'i) are an archipelago of eight major islands, several atolls, numerous smaller islets, and undersea seamounts in the North Pacific Ocean, extending some 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometres) from the island of Hawaiʻi in the south to northernmost Kure Atoll
The Hawaiian Islands have many earthquakes, generally caused by volcanic activity. Most of the early earthquake monitoring took place in Hilo, by missionaries Titus Coan, Sarah J. Lyman and her family. John Buck is a dynamic artist widely known for his carved wood and bronze sculptures and large woodblock prints that incorporate a variety of diverse imagery. Recently, the artist has been creating largescale mechanical kinetic sculptures. On the event of MAM’s 40th anniversary, the museum will realize its longstanding desire to host a solo exhibition of Buck’s work. The scale of his sculptural work requires an installation in two of MAM’s larger spaces, the Carnegie and the Aresty galleries. The exhibition includes a mix of sculptures and prints on loan from the artist, paired with select works borrowed from the collections of the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation. The exhibition will premier Buck’s most recently completed kinetic sculpture State of the Union.
State of the Union includes a host of signs and signifiers that convey a dense narrative typical of Buck’s signature approach. Motors engage leather belts and carved gears. Cogs spin. Wheels turn. Heads rotate and rock. Figures move in elaborate gestures. Objects come closer then move away. Motion, however, is only the most immediate sensory experience. His sculptures, comprising a vast array of objects and symbols, offer profound and layered messages often with a pointed social or political undertone.
Art historians and critics often attempt to include artists in particular art historical movements, but the challenge of how to frame Buck’s significant production is self-evident. MAM curator emeritus Stephen Glueckert states, “using monikers such as ‘modernist’ or ‘post-modernist’ can seem really silly when thinking about Buck’s work…I would most humbly assert that he is an artist who tries to be realistic in telling a more accurate story… that the artist’s shapes, forms, and motion can tell a more engaged and encompassing story than words in history books. Artist’s stories are sometimes laced with irony. This is especially true in the language he uses…I think of him as ‘a realist’.”
Buck’s love of materials, attention to composition, and sensitivity to surface and color are all the characteristics that reflect his obsessive thinking process. The artist states, “The nature of my sculptures is that they are compositions that balance the weight of form and imagery. I think of my carvings as being somewhat matter-of-fact. If there is any appeal to this, it is due to the nature of the wood. The unfinished wood has a warm glow resembling flesh.”
Greg Kucera, whose gallery represents the artist in Seattle, states, “Buck uses jelutong wood as his primary material. It is a soft, white wood culled from Malaysian farming operations. Too soft to have any value as a building material, it is perfectly suited to the furniture maker and wood sculptor. The process of its own making becomes very apparent in the finished piece. Each hack mark and chisel cut remains visible.”
Buck’s artwork, however, is not constructed for the sake of formality. Even though it is obvious that he enjoys the materials and creative process, his sculptures and prints address very real concerns. His work has a profound directness that targets casual inhumanity, outright stupidity, or gross negligence. While these kinetic works feel playful, Buck elucidates his observations of the fragility of the human condition and his feeling of helplessness about the impending consequences of human action.
Buck has created acting and moving instruments with a potent message. Like many storytellers and balladeers, the artist has a soft side and a dark side. That contrast of light and dark is something that seems completely consistent and natural in Buck’s work. From Daumier and Goya to Picasso, artists have wrestled with depicting current social and political affairs, seeking to offer commentary and resolution through their artwork. In our time, Buck takes on this important role. But for artists like Buck, this is not a choice; it is an imperative.
Buck was born in Ames, Iowa, and received his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri. He went on to study at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine and received his MFA from the University of California, Davis. He has lived much of his life between two homes, one in Bozeman and the other on the Big Island of Hawaii. Montana is fortunate to have Buck as a supportive and inspirational presence in the state. Buck and his wife, sculptor Deborah Butterfield, were awarded the Governor’s Arts Award in 2010.
Buck’s work has been widely exhibited throughout the United States and is included in numerous private and public collections, including Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, Art Institute of Chicago; the Brooklyn Museum, Contemporary Arts Center in Honolulu, Denver Art Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Seattle Art Museum, and the Missoula Art Museum.
THE CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR RAILROAD TRAIN FILM VISTA DOME ADVENTURE 70922
The Burlington Route, Rio Grande, and Western Pacific Railroads produced this tourism promotional film in the 1950's to highlight the California Zephyr luxury train, running between Chicago and San Francisco. The California Zephyr (the CZ, or Silver Lady) was a passenger train operated by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy (CB&Q), Denver & Rio Grande Western (D&RGW) and Western Pacific railroads, all which dubbed it the most talked about train in America on March 19, 1949, with the first departure the following day. It was scheduled to pass through the most spectacular scenery on its route in the daylight. The original train ceased operation in 1970, though the D&RGW continued to operate its own passenger service, the Rio Grande Zephyr, between Salt Lake City and Denver using the original equipment until 1983. Since 1983 the California Zephyr name has been applied to the Amtrak service, which operates daily and is a hybrid of the route of the original Zephyr and its former rival, the City of San Francisco.
The original California Zephyr operated over the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad from Chicago to Denver, Colorado, the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad between Denver and Salt Lake City, Utah, and the Western Pacific Railroad from Salt Lake City to Oakland, California. Cars owned by different railroads ran together; cars cycled in and out for service, repairs, and varying passenger loads with the seasons.
The first train was named in San Francisco by Eleanor Parker while California Lieutenant Governor Goodwin Knight, mayor of San Francisco Elmer Robinson, and WP President Harry A. Mitchell looked on. For the inaugural run in 1949, every female on the train was given silver and orange orchids flown from Hilo, Hawaii. The car hostesses were known as Zephyrettes.[3]:68
In summer 1954 the schedule for 2,532 miles Chicago to San Francisco was 50hr 50min. An eastbound California Zephyr through Ruby Canyon saw the train's first birth on March 1, 1955, when Reed Zars was born.
The Zephyr was not immune to falling passenger travel in the 1960s. The Western Pacific applied to discontinue its portion in 1966 but the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) refused after public outcry. The D&RGW made the same request in 1969 and in 1970 the ICC permitted Western Pacific to end its portion, provided the D&RGW and Burlington provide some semblance of [service] between Chicago and Ogden, Utah. The last westbound California Zephyr to the west coast left Chicago on March 22, 1970 and arrived in Oakland two days later. The California Zephyr had operated for 21 years and 2 days. East of Salt Lake City the train was reduced to a tri-weekly schedule, operating as California Service on the Burlington and as the Rio Grande Zephyr on the Rio Grande. The Rio Grande portion of the train was extended beyond Salt Lake to Ogden, Utah, allowing Nevada and California passengers to connect to the Southern Pacific Railroad's City of San Francisco. This continued until the creation of Amtrak on May 1, 1971.
The brainchild of Velma McPeek, the Burlington's Supervisor of Passenger Train Services, the Zephyettes were train hostesses who performed a wide variety of roles, from tour guide to first aid responder to babysitter. After debuting on the Denver Zephyr in 1936, they served on the California Zephyr from 1949 until it was discontinued in 1970. Described by former Zephyrette Julie Ann Lyman as the railroad's answer to the air line stewardess, the various duties of the position included welcoming passengers, making announcements, sending telegrams, making dinner reservations, and generally serving as a liaison between the train's passengers and its crew. At any one time, there were 10 or 11 Zephyrettes who were actively employed. When Amtrak revived the California Zephyr in 1983 it invited a former Zephyrette, Beulah Bauman, to christen the train.
A pair of the Western Pacific's Budd Rail Diesel Cars (RDCs), replacements for the Royal Gorge (trains No. 1 and 2), also picked up the name Zephyrette. From September 15, 1950 to October 2, 1960, they were in service between Oakland, California, and Salt Lake City, a distance of 924 miles (1,487 km),[8] which made the route the longest RDC service in the United States
