Group A at MACBA Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, 19-07-2018
Japanese experimental duo formed in 2012 by Tommi Tokyo (synthesizers, drum machines and vocals) and Sayaka Botanic (violin, sampler and cassette tapes). Their early shows came as a shock to most spectators, non-stop waves of avant-garde noise, intensely emotional poetry reading and performance arts such as half nude live-painting.
They have self-produced/released 3 albums and a remix single by Tom Furse from The Horrors (3rd album was later released on Mecanica Records) and played their first full European tour incl. TodaysArt, Soy Festival and RIAM in the autumn 2015.
Since early 2016, the duo has been based in Berlin where they are further developing their musical and visual materials. They have performed at local CTM Festival, Krake Festival as well as Many other European Festivals such as OFF Festival, Donaufestival, Roskilde Festival and Le Guess Who?, just to name a few. In 2017 their Mannequin Records debut 12 came out.
Their approach to djing is similar to how they make music, creating and mixing completely different sounds and juxtaposing Tommi and Sayaka's contrasting tastes. Their unique palette of sounds combines industrial/minimal synth/rhythmic noise with contemporary classical music and soundtracks from 60-80's films. Their experimental DJ-set at Atonal Berlin '16 and mixtape for Brvtalist are all archived on Soundcloud.

WALKING TOUR [2018.03] MACBA (Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art) by Richard Meier
MACBA Barcelona
MACBA - Barcelona, Spain
The Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona building is the work of North American architect Richard Meier. Designed in 1990 and built between 1991 and 1995, it was conceived as an assemblage of several prisms (with a base of 120 x 35 metres at its base, a height of 23 metres) and takes up 14,300 m2 of floor space in total. The centre is a cylindrical volume that cuts through all the floors – from the basement to the roof – and organises the exhibition areas along a longitudinal axis over three floors, starting with the ground floor.
Richard Meier’s architecture is fundamentally a formal reinterpretation of rationalism, with references to the masters of the modern movement, particularly Le Corbusier. The building is shaped by a combination of rectilinear and curved elements, a geometry that is softened by the external light that penetrates into the building through open galleries and large skylights.
The main entrance is located somewhere near the centre of the made façade, at the same point that is also the start of a passage connecting to the garden behind the building and splits the ground floor into two areas: on one hand, the private areas, the bookshop and the museum store; on the other, the lobby that leads to the exhibition rooms (with a floor area of 4,980 m2).
The private section of the building, which can be accessed from the west façade, contains the reception area for the museum offices, a loading dock and 1475 m2 of office space distributed over seven levels. The technical installations and reserves area is located in the basement, which takes up 2,250 m2 of the building. There is no public access to level 1, except for the Auditorium.
Natural light enters the building, be it through the apertures in the corners, the curtain walls, or the skylights in the ceilings. Some structural elements are separated from the line of the façade and the building envelope in order to allow continuous overhead lighting. This concept also applies to the atrium, which the building’s quintessential space for interaction. It has been resolved as covered gallery, parallel to the façade, which filters and distributes light throughout the three levels that people move through in the museum. The atrium also links the three floors through a series of access ramps and a passage leading to the exhibition rooms.

Interview with Jaume Plensa at Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA)
Sculpture is the best way to ask a question, explains Spanish conceptual artist and sculptor Jaume Plensa. The main obsession for me was to try to understand the relationship between individuality, single, and the community, the totality.
Reflecting on the major retrospective at Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA), Richard Gray Gallery partnered with Frieze to produce an interview with Jaume Plensa, discussing his practice and philosophy for making work. The work is so strongly related with your personal life, that it is moving, following you, in some way, he says. I’m from the Mediterranean, which means that for me I have to touch, to caress even ideas. Ferran Barenblit, Director of MACBA, explains that curating Plensa’s exhibition has created a dialogue between the artist’s works and the museum’s history of showing conceptual art.
Jaume Plensa’s retrospective at MACBA exhibited from December 1, 2018 until April 22, 2019.
