Design & Innovation | MAK FUTURE LAB
Cross-Border Cooperation between Design Institutions Transitioning to the Digital Age
At the beginning of the year, the MAK FUTURE LAB introduces the cross-border project “Design and Innovation,” whose aim is to create a Slovak–Austrian research cooperation between leading institutions of design and applied art in Bratislava and Vienna, with the goal of exploring contemporary design strategies.
The newly conceived MAK DESIGN LAB takes a holistic approach to this theme complex: objects from historical collections and contemporary artefacts produced by local and international designers enter into intensive dialogue, exploring—through this trans-disciplinary, trans-epochal approach—both design’s potential and the transformation it is currently undergoing.
Within the framework of the project, the Slovak Design Center is founding a research and development lab—a new department whose preliminary tasks include the creation of a materials library and the innovative, multi-medial presentation of objects from collections. Accompanying the project, the VŠVU (Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Bratislava) and Die Angewandte (University of Applied Arts Vienna) are offering their students a research-oriented specialization. From the beginning, young academics and artists will thus enter into dialog with experts participating in the project.
To kick off the project, the following panel members discuss the synergetic yet critically reflective relationship between design and innovation:
Vlasta Kubušová, crafting plastics studio (Bratislava/Berlin)
Ruth Mateus-Berr, die Angewandte – University of Applied Arts Vienna, Institute of Arts and Society, Social Design
mischer'traxler studio (Vienna), designer duo and VIENNA BIENNALE 2019 curators
Mária Rišková, Director Slovak Design Center (Bratislava)
Moderator: Christoph Thun-Hohenstein
Project partners: SCD – Slovak Design Center, Bratislava, MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art, Vienna, VŠVU – Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Bratislava, die Angewandte – University of Applied Arts Vienna
The new research cooperation receives support within the framework of the EU program INTERREG V-A Slovakia–Austria.

300 Jahre Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur

With its wide-ranging jubilee exhibition 300 YEARS OF THE VIENNA PORCELAIN MANUFACTORY, the MAK is drawing attention to the history and significance of the second-oldest porcelain manufactory in Europe. Founded in May 1718 when the imperial privilege for porcelain production was granted to Claudius Innocentius Du Paquier, the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory set new aesthetic standards over the following decades. Some 1 000 objects from the holdings of the MAK as well as national and international collections offer a formidable overview of Viennese developments in the context of Asian precursors and European competitors.

I am pleased to present you my Youtube channel Simona Cochi The Austrian Way (following up “The Italian Way” Edition of 255 video shoot in Milan).
Today the14th of may 2018 is the first announcement step about this newmedia project designed specifically to devote my attention to Austria.
The purpose of this media is to showcase internationally the virtues and related endownment of Vienna.
The Austrian capital city as charmed me intensely after a one year and half of researches on Luxury and historical European capital cities.
My playlists will consider the same topics from a Lifestyle and Fashion/Design point of views.
All the videos will be in english language with a bit flavour of Italian Style.
This editorial project has been conceived on my return to Milan (September 2017) after a year and a half of work and research in different european fashion and design cities and in some new luxury retail outposts. London, Bicester, Oxford, Manchester, Copenhagen, Dublin, Vienna, Ibiza they all gave me he opportunity of discovering different brands, retail trends, customer care approaches, promotional tecniques, dominant styles and aesthetic standards.
SAGMEISTER & WALSH: BEAUTY | MAK Vienna
With their exhibition project SAGMEISTER & WALSH: Beauty, Stefan Sagmeister and Jessica Walsh make a visually impressive multimedia plea for us to take delight in beauty. Spreading across the entire MAK, their exhibition investigates why people feel attracted to beauty, how they can deal with it, and which positive effects beauty can have. With the aid of examples from the fields of graphic design, product design, architecture, and city planning, Sagmeister & Walsh demonstrate that beautiful objects, buildings, and strategies are not only more pleasing, but actually more effective, and that form does not merely follow function, but in many cases actually is the function.

Schreibschrank von Koloman Moser | Ein Möbel malen? (english subtitles)
(Sebastian Hackenschmidt)

Koloman Moser, Secretary Desk
The secretary desk designed by Koloman Moser for the mother of Fritz Waerndorfer (1868–1939)—who, alongside Josef Hoffmann and Moser himself was one of the cofounders of the Wiener Werkstätte in 1903—is one of the first pieces of furniture that the Wiener Werkstätte set about realizing. This object, reminiscent of Biedermeier secretary desks, consists of a smooth-sided cube on short legs tapering towards the floor and is equipped with a drop-down writing surface. The surfaces of this desk are done according to the idea of planar ornamentation: every single surface is decoratively framed and hence defined as such. Two further examples of this freestanding desk type with a pull-out seat are known: today, one of them is at Stoclet House in Brussels, while the other is held by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. (english subtitles)
(Rainald Franz)

Large Bowl from a Hunting Service | Where Does Leaf and Strapwork Come from?
Not only were carpets adapted for European consumers. Since the 17th century, the early European porcelains competed with their Chinese archetypes imported by the East India Companies. In the course of the 18th century, the imperial court had preferred porcelain tableware. In 1718, the court war agent Claudius Innocentius du Paquier founded the first Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur [Vienna Porcelain Manufactory] with the imperial privilege awarded to him by Emperor Karl VI
and with porcelain workers and painters lured from Meissen. The production of complete porcelain table sets already began in Vienna in the 1720s. One of the earliest service sets, the so-called Jagdservice [hunting service], was probably manufactured for Emperor Karl VI or the Prince of Liechtenstein. Like the “Savonnerie Paravent Panels”, it features naturalistic animal representations. (Rainald Franz)

Virtual Reality trifft angewandte Kunst – MAK FUTURE LAB
Eine Podiumsdiskussion im Rahmen des MAK FUTURE LAB
anlässlich des Ausstellungsexperiments KLIMT’S MAGIC GARDEN: A Virtual Reality Experience by Frederick Baker

CHINESE WHISPERS
Recent Art from the Sigg Collection
WED, 30.01.2019–SUN, 26.05.2019
An exhibition by the MAK, Vienna in dialogue with the collector Uli Sigg and in cooperation with the Kunstmuseum Bern and the Zentrum Paul Klee
With CHINESE WHISPERS: Recent Art from the Sigg Collection a comprehensive exhibition on Chinese contemporary art is coming to Vienna. Uli Sigg has been following the development of contemporary art in China since the late 1970s. In the mid-1990s, he started putting together the world’s most significant and representative collection of Chinese art. A business journalist, entrepreneur, and Swiss ambassador to China, North Korea, and Mongolia (1995–1998), he had the chance to take a look behind the scenes of the social and economic developments dedicated to both tradition and the future, as China’s vision of a new Silk Road shows. Cultural and sociopolitical values form the frame of reference of the MAK exhibition. The museum creates a discursive platform by contrasting works from the Sigg Collection with objects from the MAK Collection. This interplay highlights China’s contemporary art production as well as its aesthetic or iconographic references. The historical object becomes a vision machine for the contemporary.

(Johannes Wieninger)

Sailboat by an Island | Japanese paper: Production and Uses
East Asian landscape painting does not seek to represent reality; instead, viewers are inspired to embark on an imaginary journey. In form and thematic content, these pictures follow a tradition that extends far back in history and radiated from Chinese art academies to neighboring countries. Various styles reached Japanese painting schools in a series of waves, which made it difficult for a “traditional Japanese style” to develop. Scientific and artistic contacts between Europe and China in the 18th century also influenced Japan, and around the year 1800 experiments with Western perspective found their way into painting. James Turrell – MAKlite reloaded
The exceptional permanent outdoor installation MAKlite by the world-famous American artist James Turrell fills the MAK with an inner light which simultaneously illuminates the historistic façade of the building at Stubenring.
In close cooperation with the artist, the latest LED technology was applied to the lighting technology, developed by the Florentine artificial lighting specialist Targetti. Using the current technical possibilities, Turrell expanded the original color range to a multifaceted luminous play of colors. The reprogramming now comprises ten instead of the original four colors and can be seen in the evenings from sunset till midnight and in the mornings from 5 a.m. till sunrise.
As part of the VIENNA ART WEEK, on the evening of 21 November 2018 MAKlite was presented in this refined version with cutting edge technology for the first time.
Our special thanks go to all donors who through the initiative of the
MAK ART SOCIETY have made this project possible.
JAMES TURRELL: Magician of Light
James Turrell (* 1943) is one of the most important artists of our time. For more than half a century, he has been working with light and space, creating works of art that confront the viewer with the limits and possibilities of human perception. Dispensing almost entirely with materiality and objectuality, through physical precision he masterfully blends reality and virtuality. He gives space to light itself, creating apparently hovering spaces out of light.

KOLOMAN MOSER
Koloman Moser’s oeuvre continues to exert a lasting fascination. As a universal artist Moser masters the disciplines of painting, graphic art, arts and crafts, and interior design as well as fashion and scenography. To an impressive extent Moser embodies the Gesamtkunstwerk or total work of art as advocated by the Vienna Secession. He is considered one of the most important pioneers of Viennese Modernism, one of the most influential artists of Viennese Art Nouveau, and is—alongside Gustav Klimt and Josef Hoffmann—one of the leading artists of Vienna’s artistic renewal.
