Sri Lanka (from the Sanskrit Venerable Island[citation needed]), officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (pronounced /ˌʃriːˈlɑːŋkɑː/, Sinhala: , Tamil: இலங்கை; known as Ceylon (/sɪˈlɒn/) before 1972 and as Taprobane (/təˈprɒbəniː/) in ancient times), is an island country in South Asia, located about 31 kilometres (19.3 mi) off the southern coast of India. It is home to around twenty million people.
As a result of its location in the path of major sea routes, Sri Lanka is a strategic naval link between West Asia and South East Asia.[citation needed] It has also been a center of the Buddhist religion and culture from ancient times as well as being a bastion of Hinduism.[8] The Sinhalese community forms the majority of the population; Tamils, who are concentrated in the north and east of the island, form the largest ethnic minority. Other communities include Moors, Burghers, Kaffirs, Malays and the indigenous Wanniyala-Aetto people.
The country is famous for the production and export of tea, coffee, coconuts, rubber and cinnamon - which is native to the country.[9] The natural beauty of Sri Lanka's tropical forests, beaches and landscape, as well as its rich cultural heritage, make it a world famous tourist destination.[citation needed] The island also boasts the first female Prime Minister in the world, Sirimavo Bandaranaike.[10]
After over two thousand years of rule by local kingdoms, parts of Sri Lanka were colonized by Portugal and the Netherlands beginning in the 16th century, before control of the entire country was ceded to the British Empire in 1815.[citation needed] During World War II, Sri Lanka served as an important base for Allied forces in the fight against the Japanese Empire.[11] A nationalist political movement arose in the country in the early 20th century with the aim of obtaining political independence, which was eventually granted by the British after peaceful negotiations in 1948.
Every year on or about April 13 Sinhala and Tamil people celebrate Sinhala and Tamil New Year Festival, and Muslims celebrate Ramadan. Esala Perahera (A-suh-luh peh-ruh-ha-ruh) is the grand festival of Esala held in Sri Lanka. It is very grand with elegant costumes. Happening in July or August in Kandy, it has become a unique symbol of Sri Lanka. It is a Buddhist festival consisting of dances and richly decorated elephants. There are fire-dances, whip-dances, Kandian dances and various other cultural dances. The elephants are usually adorned with lavish garments. The festival ends with the traditional 'diya-kepeema'. The elephant is paraded around the city bearing the tooth of Buddha. However the new year for tamils have been established as being on January 14 from this year.
Most Sri Lankan cities and towns are connected by the Sri Lanka Railways, the state-run national railway operator. The first railway line was inaugurated on April 26, 1867, linking Colombo with Kandy. The total length of Sri Lankan roads exceeds 11,000 kilometres (6,840 mi), with a vast majority of them being paved. The government has launched several highway projects to bolster the economy and national transport system, including the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway, the Colombo-Kandy (Kadugannawa) Expressway, the Colombo-Padeniya Expressway and the Outer Circular Highway to ease Colombo's traffic congestion. There are also plans to build a major bridge connecting Jaffna to the Indian city of Chennai.
The Ceylon Transport Board is the state-run agency responsible for operating public bus services across the island. Sri Lanka also maintains 430 kilometres (270 mi) of inland waterways. It has three deep-water ports at Colombo, Trincomalee and Galle. There is also a smaller, shallower harbour at Kankesanturai, north of Jaffna. There are twelve paved airports and two unpaved airstrips in the country. SriLankan Airlines is the official national carrier, partly owned and operated by Emirates Airline. It was voted the best airline in South Asia by Skytrax. SriLankan Air Taxi is the smaller, domestic arm of the national carrier, while Expo Aviation and Lankair are private airline companies. The Bandaranaike International Airport is the country's only international airport, located in Katunayaka, 22 kilometres (14 mi) north of Colombo.

Galle Face Green, Colombo, Sri Lanka
This is Galle Face Green, Colombo, Sri Lanka on Sunday 11 November 2018. In some countries it is Remembrance Day but here, it is generally otherwise. These are the ordinary people of Colombo with their cares and worries suspended for a Sunday. Most jobs carry no pensions and, therefore, old age poverty is a problem. The people respond to this by placing themselves in proximity to relatives who are still working. The lack of private sector pensions fuels crime and delinquency but the authorities here support a negative conditioning social policy which results in widespread grievances. What makes it worse is that the people in power are themselves corrupt and the underlings know this. Anyway, this is Galle Face Brown on Remembrance Day 2018 while the locals wait for whether or not Bill Gates will snuff them all out with his beloved vaccinations. Amen.
Amazing Srilanka - City Balangoda බළන්ගොඩ
Balangoda is a large town in Ratnapura District, Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka, governed by an urban council located 143 kilometres (89 mi) away from Colombo and 43 kilometres (27 mi) from Ratnapura on Colombo - Batticaloa Highway(A4). It is one of the largest towns of the Sabaragamuwa Province. According to the 2001 census, Balangoda has a population of 16,875 and area of 16.2 km2 (4,000 acres).
Balangoda is notable due to the discovery of skeletal Hominini remains from the late Quaternary period (the earliest reliably dated record of anatomically modern humans in South Asia).[1][2] The town is also the birthplace of Balangoda Ananda Maitreya Thero[3] and Sirimavo Bandaranaike (the world's first female head of government) the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka (1960–65, 1970–77 and 1994–2000).[4][5]
Balangoda is situated in the hilly central region of central Sri Lanka on Sabaragamuwa Mountain Range. The main livelihoods of this region are farming (vegetables, fruits, and spices), rice cultivation for mainly local consumption, tea cultivation for international markets as a commercial crop and gem mining.

SRI LANKA WAR FRONT - PART 01
Pudukuduirippu Final Battle - 01
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) organization suffered a terrible blow in the area east of Puthukkudiyiruppu. In what may very well be the defining moment of the ongoing war the tigers have lost a vast array of illustrious fighting commanders as well as large numbers of cadres in a single set piece battle. More than 525 bodies of dead LTTE fighters have been recovered and a special military intelligence squad sent from colombo is busy identifying those killed. The LTTE keeps death silence over the debacle and its propaganda networks are keeping their fingers on the lips as well.
Over 250 terrorists were reported killed including senior LTTE rankers Theepan(LTTE's former 'Northern region' chief), Ruben, Nagesh, Gadaphi (former body guard of Prabakaran), Vidusha ('Malathi' female wing head), Durga ('Soothiya' female wing head) and Kamalini following pitched battles that ensued between troops and LTTE, East of Puthukkudiyirippu sources confirmed.
Although they are keeping silent, tiger officials are informing close family members of the other tigers about what has happened to their departed relatives. MI sources confirmed that a senior LTTE leader telephoned the elder brother of Colonel Theepan living in Canada and informed him of the tragic death of his brother. Among the fallen tigers Col Theepan is perhaps the single biggest loss to the movement since he had the respect among the hardcore carders as a good fighter. This LTE veteran hails from Kandawalai in Kilinochchi district and served as overall commander of the LTTE northern front fighting formations(mainly in the muhamalei nagerkovil defense line). Sivatheepan Thavabalasingham alias Theepan was also the de-facto deputy military commander of the LTTE after the demise of Balraj.
Among other senior tigers killed were the special commander and commander of the Jeyanthan infantry brigade, Keerthi and Nagesh.(The Jeyanthan brigade is raised from Eastern province cadres). Manickapodi Maheswaran alias Keerthi is a native of Arasaditheevu in Batticaloa district and served as intelligence chief for the east earlier. Selvaratnam Sundaram alias Nagesh is a native of Periyaporatheevu and has served as district military commander earlier.
Another huge loss to LTTE is that of Gaddafi also known as Viduthalai and Amuthan. This one-time chief bodyguard of Prabhakaran was later turn out to be a high ranking commander of the Imran-Pandian regiment. MI is now gathering information to decide whether this is the same Gadafi who's name is on the sam launchers found by the SLA few weeks ago.(DR has posted details about this few weeks back) Currently he was in charge of the tiger training academy.
The LTTE elite special forces division is named after former tiger leader Radha. This force was led by Silambarasan . He was killed. The deputy-commander of Radha regiment Anbu was also killed. Likewise Asmi the leader of Ponnamman mining unit was also died. The leader of Kittu artillery unit, Manivannan and chief of Kutty Sri mortar unit Gopal were also among the KIA.
An unconfirmed report states that S. Thangan , the deputy-political commissar and administrative officer under SP Thamilselvan has also killed. Among other senior tigers killed who have been identified are Ruban, Panjan, Aadithyan and Chitrangan. A senior sea tiger Mahindan has also been killed. Sources close to SLA has also revealed that more than 50 carders including several high ranking leaders were surrendered to the infantrymen of SLA. But this senario was not revealed due to sensitive matters.

Polonnaruwa and meeting a monk, Sri Lanka - Lions Club Youth Camp -
The Lions Club Youth Camp allows us to visit also another beautiful archaeological site: Polonnaruwa, but not only!
It also gifts us the possibility to meet a Buddhist monk and to ask him all the questions that we have about his religion.
In this episode I also do my best to convince a monkey to give me back a pair of sunglasses that it stole me.
Do you want to see if I manage?
Watch this video!!!
Australia0811 Travels - Horton Plains National Park, Sri Lanka
Horton Plains National Park is a protected area in the central highlands of Sri Lanka and is covered by montane grassland and cloud forest. This plateau at an altitude of 2,100--2,300 metres (6,900--7,500 ft) is rich in biodiversity and many species found here are endemic to the region. This region was designated a national park in 1988. It is also a popular tourist destination and is situated 32 kilometres (20 mi) from Nuwara Eliya and 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from Ohiya.
The original name of the area was Maha Eliya Thenna (මහ එළිය තැන්න - great open plain). But in the British period the plains were renamed after Sir Robert Wilmot-Horton, the British governor of Ceylon from 1831 to 1837, who travelled to the area to meet the Ratemahatmaya of Sabaragamuwa in 1836, in 1834 by Lt William Fisher of the 78th Regiment and Lt. Albert Watson of the 58th Regiment, who 'discovered' the plateau. Stone tools dating back to Balangoda culture have been found here. The local population who resided in the lowlands ascended the mountains to mine gems, extract iron ore, construct irrigational canal and fell trees for timber. A 6-metre (20 ft) pollen core extracted from a mire revealed that in the late quaternary period the area had a semi-arid climate and a species-restricted plant community. Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker had advised the British Government to leave all Montane Forests above 5000 ft. undisturbed and an administrative order to this effect had been issued in 1873 that prevented clearing and felling of forests in the region.
Horton Plains was designated as a wildlife sanctuary on 5 December 1969, and because of its biodiversity value, was elevated to a national park on 18 March 1988. The Peak Wilderness Sanctuary which lies in west is contiguous with the park. The land area covered by Horton Plains is 3,160 hectares (12.2 sq mi). Horton Plains contains the most extensive area of cloud forest still existing in Sri Lanka.[4] On July 2010, the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka which incorporates Horton Plains National Park, Peak Wilderness Sanctuary and Knuckles Mountain Range was inscribed on the World Heritage List.
