Maasin Cathedral - Southern Leyte
Maasin Cathedral is a Philippine church that serves as the seat of the diocese of Southern Leyte. It is located in Maasin, the capital city of the province of Southern Leyte in the Eastern Visayas Region. Aside from the province of Southern Leyte, the towns of Matalon, Bato, Hilongos, Hindang, Inopacan and Baybay in the province of Leyte are part of the diocese. The cathedral is known for housing images that date to the Spanish colonial period. Its patron saint is Our Lady of the Assumption.
The cathedral is found in the city of Maasin. Nearby is the pilgrimage site Monte Cueva, known for its living stones that drip water.
The cathedral is a brick structure with a towering ceiling. A number of statues of different saints are displayed in the church, with the image of Our Lady of the Assumption as the centerpiece.
Among these santos are antiques that date back to the Spanish colonial era.
A church was first built on the site of the current church in 1700. This was a temporary structure made of nipa which was built by the Jesuit missionaries. It was destroyed during an attack on Maasin by Muslim pirates in 1754.
The next year, Maasin achieved the status of a town. The Augustinian priests took over the administration of the church in 1768. Reconstruction of the church took place in 1771. Unfortunately, Muslim invaders destroyed the church again in 1784 . This time, due to the initiative of a priest named Fr. Serapio Gonzales, a new structure was built out of coral rocks and hard stones. This was destroyed by fire in 1839. The church passed into the hands of Franciscan missionaries in 1843, and in 1882, Fr. Jose Paco rebuilt the church once more. After the Philippine Revolution against Spanish domination, the church was abandoned by the missionaries and regular clergy took over the parish. Until 1910, the area which is now the diocese of Maasin was part of the diocese of Cebu. From 1910 to 1937, it belonged to the Diocese of Calbayog, then from 1937 to 1968 it was made part of the diocese of Palo, Leyte.
In 1968, the church was rebuilt once again and declared a Cathedral when the Diocese of Maasin was created on August 14, 1968. Southern Leyte then became a diocese in its own right under the Archdiocese of Cebu. The Most Rev. Vicente T. Ataviado, D.D. from Sorsogon was its first Bishop. The diocese started out with 28 parishes; by 1997, the number of parishes had grown to 41. Ataviado died in March 1997 and was succeeded by Bishop Precioso D. Cantillas, SDB, D.D. from Cebu the following year.
