BLAIRMORE GLEN
STONE CIRCLE
BRODICK
ISLE OF ARRAN
SCOTLAND
INTRO
HALF WAY BETWEEN BRODICK AND LAMLASH, IS BLAIRMORE GLEN STONE CIRCLE. THE SITE IS NEXT TO THE A841 ROAD, A PARKING AREA IS JUST BEYOND THE CIRCLE. THE RING IS ALSO KNOWN AS LAMLASH ROAD STONE CIRCLE AND WAS LIKELY CONSTRUCTED BY OUR ANCESTORS FROM THE NEOLITHIC OR BRONZE AGE.
OVERVIEW
FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF THE CIRCLE, IS A FOUR POSTER WITH AN OUTLINER STONE. THE FOUR LARGE GRANITE BLOCKS, HAVE FOUR OR FIVE SMALLER STONES IN THE CIRCUMFERENCE. THESE MINILITHS LOOK LIKE THEY ARE NOT CONTEMPORARY WITH THE FOUR POSTER.
RING
THE CIRCLE HAS A DIAMETER OF 5M. THE FOUR BOULDERS ARE BETWEEN 0.5M TO OVER 1M HIGH. THE SW STONE IS THE HIGHEST. THIS MAY BE A FEMALE STONE WITH ITS DIAMOND SHAPE. THERE ARE A FEW OTHER EXAMPLES OF FOUR POSTER CIRCLES ON THE ISLAND.
ARCHAEOLOGY
A SMALL, CENTRAL, CIST COVERED BY A STONE WAS FOUND. THIS WAS CUT OUT THE SOLID ROCK. IN 1861 THE CIST WAS EXCAVATED, IT CONTAINED FRAGMENTS OF BURNT BONE AND BLACK EARTH. IN THE SOIL ABOVE THE CIST, FLINT IMPLEMENTS AND FLAKES WERE UNCOVERED. AT PRESENT, NO TRACES OF THE CIST SURVIVE.
OUTLINER
THE OUTLINER MEGALITH IS OVER 1M HIGH & WIDE BY 0.5M THICK. IT IS NOT UNUSUAL FOR A STONE CIRCLE TO HAVE AN OUTLINER. NEXT TO THIS STONE IS A RING OF NINE OR TEN SMALL STONES. THESE DO NO SEEM TO BE NEOLITHIC OR BRONZE AGE.
OTHER
VERY PROMINENTLY IN THE BACKGROUND, TO THE NORTH, IS GOATFELL. THIS IS THE HIGHEST PEAK ON ARRAN. I THINK OUR ANCIENT ANCESTORS, DELIBERATELY PLACED THE CIRCLE AT THIS LOCATION. THERE IS A POSSIBLE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SKY, LANDSCAPE AND CIRCLE.
Standing Stones Of Arran
A collection of film clips from my adventure on Machrie Moor near the settlement of Machrie on the Isle of Arran, Scotland.
Arran or the Isle of Arran is an island off the coast of Scotland, in the United Kingdom. It is the largest island in the Firth of Clyde and the seventh largest Scottish island, at 432 square kilometres. Historically part of Buteshire, it is in the unitary council area of North Ayrshire.
Arran has been continuously inhabited since the early Neolithic period. Numerous prehistoric remains have been found. From the 6th century onwards, Goidelic-speaking peoples from Ireland colonised it and it became a centre of religious activity. In the troubled Viking Age, Arran became the property of the Norwegian crown, until formally absorbed by the kingdom of Scotland in the 13th century. The 19th-century clearances led to significant depopulation and the end of the Gaelic language and way of life. The economy and population have recovered in recent years, the main industry being tourism. There is a diversity of wildlife, including three species of tree endemic to the area. Wikipedia.

TORRYLIN CAIRN
LAGG
ISLE OF ARRAN
SCOTLAND
INTRO
ON THE SOUTH OF ARRAN, NEAR LAGG, IS THE REMAINS OF A NEOLITHIC CHAMBERED CAIRN. TORRYLIN IS IN THE CARE OF HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT SCOTLAND & IS SIGNPOSTED FROM THE MAIN ROAD. A 0.5M WALK FROM THE PARKING AREA, WILL TAKE YOU TO A MUCH DEPLETED, CLYDE CAIRN, WHICH IS STILL WELL WORTH A VISIT.
OVERVIEW
TORRYLIN WAS A PLACE OF BURIAL & CEREMONY FOR OVER A MILLENNIA.
THE MAIN FEATURE TODAY, IS THE WELL PRESERVED & EXPOSED FOUR COMPARTMENT CHAMBER. THE CHAMBER IS OVER 6.5M LONG X NEARLY 1M WIDE & EACH SECTION IS ROUGHLY 1.5M LONG. THE SITES OVERALL AREA IS ABOUT 20M
THE SLABBED CHAMBERS ARE ALIGNED NEARLY NORTH, SOUTH, IN THE DIRECTION OF AILSA CRAIG. THERE IS NO DOUBT, OUR ANCIENT ANCESTORS, DELIBERATELY CONSTRUCTED TORRYLIN’S CHAMBER, TOWARDS THIS MASSIVE GRANITE ROCK. IN THE GALIEC LANGUAGE (AILLSE CREAG) TRANSLATES AS THE ‘FAIRY ROCK’.
ARCHAEOLOGY
ARCHAEOLOGY AT TORRYLIN HAS UNCOVERED REMAINS OF SIX ADULTS, A CHILD & A BABY WHICH WERE MIXED UP & PUT IN THE SOUTHERN MOST CHAMBER. NONE OF THE REMAINS WERE A FULL SKELETON. BONES OF ANIMALS, WERE ALSO UNCOVERED, ALONG WITH A LUGGED BOWL & A SCRAPER MADE OF FLINT.
CLYDE CAIRNS
THE CLYDE CAIRNS WOULD HAVE A PAVED & CRESCENT SHAPED FORECOURT, SURROUNDED BY A FACADE OF STANDING STONES. AT TORRYLIN, NO REMAINS OF THIS CONSTRUCTION EXSISTS. ON THE FORECOURT IT IS LIKELY THE MAIN CENTRE OF CEREMONY TOOK PLACE.
FROM THE FORECOURT, THE ELONGATED SHAPED CAIRN COULD BE ENTERED, THIS WOULD HAVE HAD A LINTELED ROOF. TORRYLIN IS A TYPICAL, CLYDE DESIGN TYPE CAIRN, ERECTED AROUND 5,300 YEARS AGO. THEY ARE FOUND ON THE FIRTH OF CLYDE & SW SCOTLAND.
OTHER INFO
ANOTHER CAIRN NEARBY, CALLED ‘TORRYLIN WATER’ WAS OBLITERATED IN 1864. SEVERAL URNS WERE FOUND, UNFORTUNATELY THEY TURNED TO DUST. MANY AN ANCIENT SITE CAN BE FOUND ON THE ISLE OF ARRAN, MOST NOTABLY, MACHRIE MOOR, WITH ITS STANDING STONES & STONE CIRCLES.
Old Photographs Lagg Isle Of Arran Scotland

He was married to Effie Lawrie Brechin. In the First World War he served as Regimental Medical Officer first to the Welsh Guards then to the Irish Guards. He served in France and saw action both at Ypres and Passchendaele. He received the Distinguished Service Order for his actions. He was also Mentioned in Dispatches. After the war he joined Edinburgh Corporation as Clinical Medical Officer and ran various clinics relating to sexually transmitted diseases in the Old Town. In 1933 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He died on 25 March 1934. Stone circles that are more beautiful than Stonehenge HD 2017 HD
Stone circles that are more beautiful than Stonehenge 2016 HD
Stonehenge in the west of England is undoubtedly the king of stone circles - stone monuments originally set out in a way to form a circle or ellipse.
However, it's easy to overlook the dozens of other stone circles which can be found across the British Isles and even as far afield as Israel. We gathered some other stone circles - one of which is underwater - that demonstrate the diversity of neolithic monuments.

Lochranza
Perhaps the most attractive of Arran's villages, Lochranza is surrounded on three sides by hills and facing the imposing grey ruin of its castle placed dramatically on a shingle spit sticking into the Loch, a visit is an essential part of any trip to the Isle of Arran. The ferry route from Lochranza to Claonaig, provides a back door to the island. Of course there is also the Visitor Centre for the Isle of Arran Distillery. The distillery itself had begun production in 1995 and was the first (legal) distillery on Arran for 160 years. It can be found in purpose built premises at the southern end of the village.
Machrie Mor
One of the largest areas of reasonably level ground on the Isle of Arran, lies in a broad triangle to the south of the Machrie Water as it makes its way to the sea a little south of mid way down the island's west coast. People have been present in this part of Arran for up to 8,000 years, and for the last 6,000 of those years they have been living in ways that left a physical imprint on the landscape around them. At the heart of this wider ancient landscape, both physically and spiritually, is Machrie Moor. Here are the remains of no fewer than six closely grouped stone circles, while the immediately surrounding area comes complete with chambered cairns, a standing stone and more hut circles.
Eas Mors
Eas Mor is a waterfall on the island of Arran, Scotland. It is located on the Allt Mor north of Auchenhew Bridge near the village of Kildonan. The name is from Gaelic and means big waterfall. This forest walk climbs past a dramatic waterfall to reach a remote and peaceful hill loch. 2km, 1 hr moderate up/down hill walk on good track.
9 Oct 19 – Machrie Moor
Today the weather is no better, so time for an indoor day. We drove back up to Lochranza via the Machrie Moor parking. We followed the coastal road all the way and spent much of the time in water rather than beside it. The rain is causing the ground to saturate and flow straight into the sea via the quickest route. We arrived at the distillery and headed in for some lunch before our tour. The food was excellent as was the tour and the whisky. After the tour we headed for Lochranza Castle to take some video and photos. Then back to the distillery to collect a geocache and Lindsay wanted some Chocolate! Then we headed back off to our planned park up at Machrie Moor. Here we intended to stop and head for the stones in the morning. Nope! Lindsay was straight off to visit the stone s. Time to settle in and stay out of the weather.
10 Oct 19 – Crinan Canal
Today we had Rain, rain and more rain. We left Machrie Moor with the intention of heading for Glenashdale. We stopped instead at Eas Mors for a walk between the showers. Lindsay made it, back and legs made me turn around and head back. We then headed to Lamlash Point via the shops to restock. We lunched at Seal point and Lindsay walked to the end of the point. We decided it was time to catch a ferry. Arran is a great place but we needed to head for drier places. We caught the last ferry of the day. Good Bye Arran we will be back. We head to Crinan for a night stop via a takeaway that did Chinese and Indian food. Then chill and relax and work out what we are dong tomorrow before bedtime, with some Arran Chocolate before bed.
Currently we are Weekend Warriors. We plan to go full time in the future, however for now we continue our explorations.

GIANTS’ GRAVES
CHAMBERED CAIRNS
LARGYMORE
ISLE OF ARRAN
SCOTLAND
INTRO
THE GIANTS GRAVES ON THE SE OF ARRAN ARE TWO OF OVER TWENTY CHAMBERED CAIRNS ON THE ISLAND. THE MAJORITY OF THESE ARE THE ‘CLYDE’ DESIGN TYPE. HIGH ABOVE WHITING BAY IS TWO SITES 40M APART. ON MY FIRST VISIT IN 2006, THE CAIRNS WERE SURROUNDED BY TREES. THESE HAVE BEEN CUT DOWN IN RECENT YEARS. YOU CAN NOW ENJOY STUNNING VIEWS SOUTH, TO THE HOLY ISLE.
OVERVIEW
OUR ANCESTORS BUILT THESE CAIRNS IN 3300BC-3000BC WHICH IS EARLY NEOLITHIC. THE SITES WOULD HAVE BEEN USED CONTINUOUSLY OVER A LONG PERIOD, WITH RITUALS AND BELIEFS CHANGING. UNLIKE OTHER CAIRNS, THE GIANTS GRAVES WERE NOT SEALED PERMANENTLY.
THE CAIRNS WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY IMPORTANT TO THE PREHISTORIC PEOPLE OF ARRAN. AN EXTENSIVE COMMUNITY EFFORT WOULD HAVE BEEN PUT INTO ERECTING THESE LARGE MEGALITHIC SITES.
NORTH CAIRN
THE NORTH CAIRN IS THE BIGGER OF THE TWO, IT IS MUCH DEPLETED. IN ITS PRESENT FORM, IT IS UNRECOGNISABLE FROM ITS ORIGINAL DESIGN, BUT STILL WORTH A VISIT. THE 6M X 1M SIZED CHAMBER IS ALIGNED ROUGHLY NORTH-SOUTH. THE LARGE TILTED MEGALITH TO THE SIDE IS COVERED IN CARVED GRAFFITI.
THE ORIGINAL CONSTRUCTION FROM 5000 YEARS AGO MAY HAVE RESEMBLED A Y SHAPE OR A UTERUS. OUR ANCESTORS MAY HAVE USED THE CHAMBER AS A WOMB TOMB, WITH BIRTH & REBIRTH CEREMONIES. COMMUNICATION WITH THE ANCESTORS MAY ALSO HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN THIS MULTIFUNCTIONAL CONSTRUCTION.
IN 1902 THE NORTH CAIRN WAS EXCAVATED. THE FINDS UNEARTHED WERE LEAF-SHAPED ARROWHEADS, BURNT BONE, FLINT KNIVES AND POTTERY. A LAYER OF
CHARCOAL WAS ALSO FOUND IN THE CHAMBER.
DECEASED FAMILY MEMBERS COULD HAVE BEEN LEFT TO BE DE-FLESHED BY RAVENS IN THE SEMI-CIRCULAR FORECOURT AREA. PARTS OF THE SKELETON COULD HAVE BEEN PLACED IN CERTAIN AREAS OF THE CHAMBER. REMAINS WERE SOMETIMES BURIED WITH ARROW HEADS, KNIVES AND DECORATED POTTERY.
SOUTH CAIRN
THE SMALLER 4M LONG SOUTH CAIRN SITS AT A RIGHT ANGLE TO THE MAIN SITE. IT IS NEARLY ON A EAST-WEST AXIS WHICH SUGGESTS AN EQUINOX ALIGNMENT. HERE OUR ANCESTORS ORIENTATED TWO SITES TO ROUGHLY THE FOUR CARDINAL DIRECTIONS.
THE SOUTH CAIRN WAS EXCAVATED IN THE 1960’S. SOME OF THE FINDS WERE BURNT HUMAN BONE AND SHERDS OF POTTERY.
