Craft Beer Boom: Small breweries continue opening in Tri-State
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Cincinnati is returning to its roots, or hops.
Once known as the beer capital of the nation, with dozens of breweries, the Queen City is experiencing a rebirth of suds. It's part of a nationwide explosion in small, local, craft breweries. The Ohio Craft Beer Convention is in Cincinnati the week of February 6. At the Ohio Craft Brewers Association Convention, what better person to ask about beer than Jacob Beer!
Jacob Beer and the craft beer industry have grown up together. He's with NDL Keg, one of many beer suppliers at the convention. Jim Rack, of Rack Draft Services, makes beer taps, or faucets as they're known in the trade. Ohio has nearly 200 craft breweries. That's a 20 percent increase over a year ago.
One in Cleveland and three in Cincinnati, the new Madtree facility in Oakley, Rivertown, and Brink Brewing in College Hill. There were more than a dozen craft breweries in greater Cincinnati.
Jacob Beer said, No, it's better. You can taste the richness in the flavor, the hopes, the experimental styles that go into it.
The craft beer industry is growing so quickly there are banks which specialize in crafting loans.
Kate Smith with Live Oak Bank/Craft said, Craft is really important. She continued, But the push is towards craft and local. I'd say over the past 10 years its been completely different.
Craft breweries are defined as brewing fewer than six-million barrels of beer per year. All of Ohio's craft breweries combined don't come close to that.
Anheuser-Busch, by comparison, brews more than 100-million gallons annually.

Boozier Brews: New law lifts alcohol cap
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Ohio brewers get the go ahead for boozier beers.
A law that gets rid of the cap on alcohol content for beer takes effect Wednesday, August 31. Even on a Tuesday night, Madtree Brewing was packed. Soon the beer brewed could be stronger. A law that gets rid of the cap on alcohol content for beer is expected to help the booming craft beer business.
Ohio lawmakers followed the lead of other states, throwing out the 12% cap and giving craft brewers more room for creativity. There are plenty in Cincinnati.
Scott Hand works at Urban Artifact in Northside. He said, I think one of the reasons Cincinnati is so good is because there's a fight to have good quality products.
At Urban Artifact, there are three main flagship beers and popular beers brewed with fruit. Although they don't have any immediate plans to brew anything with a higher alcohol content, they welcome the flexibility.
Obviously, it removes an upper constraint to something that we've not necessarily run up against yet, but we're already super creative in the stuff that we do so it certainly helps us in the fact that we can be more creative as we move ahead, Hand said.
Ohio brewers said they were competing with neighboring states like Kentucky, Indiana, and Pennsylvania that either don't have caps or have higher caps. The 12% cap rule had been on the books since just after prohibition.
Crap Beer Tours #1 Mt. Carmel Brewing Company
Mt. Carmel Brewing Company is a family owned business, started by its founders Mike and Kathleen Dewey. In 2005 what started as a hobby experiment, blew up into something much greater than that. With Mike?s engineering background, the two decided it was time to take their hobby to the next level. Starting with growlers and one blend, they sold their product to local retail locations. It didn?t take long to catch on, and the great taste of Mt. Carmel is now enjoyed with 16 different blends over time, and retail and draft locations all over the state of Ohio. We got together with Mike to ask him how everything started, and what new things are coming up in the world of Mt. Carmel Brewing Company...

Lauren Hill's legacy continues with search for a cure
WOODLAWN, Ohio (Brandon Orr) -- One year ago this month, the world watched Lauren Hill play basketball with a sold-out crowd of more than 10,000 at Xavier's Cintas Center. The Lauren Hill Classic returns this weekend and leading up to the event is a telethon to support The Cure Starts Now. The telethon begins Friday at 3 p.m. and will last for 22 hours. The goal is to increase the total amount raised in Lauren's name to .2 million. Each number is symbolic of Lauren's basketball jersey number 22. The telethon number is (513) 326-3845. The total was more than .9 million early Friday morning, 86% of the goal, leaving approximately 00,000 left to go. Jen Gault, from The Cure Starts Now, said, The Cure Starts Now is not another cancer charity. We focus on the home-run cure for all cancers and our overhead costs are extremely low. I think our latest financials were at one and a half to two percent. So basically, 98 cents of every dollar you donate to us goes straight to research. Local 12 was there last year when Lauren met her initial goal. As the money rolled in, all she could think about was the ultimate goal -- finding the home-run cure for cancer. All you guys that donated, we're going to help do more research on better treatments and better chemos and hopefully a cure for cancer, Lauren said at last year's telethon. Stay with Local 12 and local12.com for updates throughout the day from The Cure Starts Now. Follow Brandon Orr on Twitter @BrandonOrrWx and LIKE him on Facebook.
