Bhopal, known as the city of lakes, is also known for having a number of museums. One of the state museums that is always hogging the limelight is the Madhya Pradesh Tribal Museum. In fact, the MP Government decided to observe International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on August 9 as Tribal Day. The primary purpose of celebrating this day is to showcase the culture of indigenous people of the state. This Tribal Museum in Bhopal is a perfect place to know about tribes of Madhya Pradesh. It is being divided into many different galleries depicting cultural diversity, tribal tradition, tribal life, tribal games, tribal art & culture. As you step into these galleries, the exhibits are displayed in such a manner that you feel you are entering right into the heart of their homes and lives. The purpose of making this museum is to introduce the lifestyle, rituals and social customs of tribal people to the world.

झीलों का शहर कहे जाने वाले भोपाल को कई संग्रहालयों के लिए भी जाना जाता है। राज्य का एक संग्रहालय जो हमेशा पर्यटकों के बीच आकर्षण का केंद्र रहता है, वो है मध्यप्रदेश जनजातीय संग्रहालय। यही नहीं, 9 अगस्त को मनाए जाने वाले विश्व आदिवासी दिवस को राज्यभर में आदिवासी दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है। इस दिवस को मनाने का प्राथमिक उद्देश्य राज्य के आदिवासी लोगों की संस्कृति को सामने रखना है। मध्यप्रदेश की राजधानी भोपाल में बना ये जनजातीय संग्रहालय कई सदियों पुरानी संस्कृतियों और उनकी विविधता को संजोए हुए है। इसका पारंपरिक निर्माण जनजातीय जीवनशैली और उनकी परंपराओं को उजागर करता है। संग्रहालय की कलाकृतियों को मध्यप्रदेश के दूरदराज जिलों से आने वाले कलाकारों ने बनाया है। इस संग्रहालय को बनाने का उद्देश्य मध्यप्रदेश की जनजातियों की जीवनशैली से आमजन को रूबरू कराना है।

मध्यप्रदेश जनजातीय संग्रहालय (Madhyapradesh Tribal Museum),श्यामला हिल्स भोपाल में स्थित है, इसका लोकार्पण भारत के राष्ट्रपति श्री प्रणव मुखर्जी ने किया था। यह संग्रहालय मध्यप्रदेश शासन संस्कृति विभाग द्वारा संचालित होता है इस संग्रहालय में मध्यप्रदेश में निवासरत जनजातीय समूहों की कला संस्कृति परंपरा और जीवन उपयोगी शिल्प चित्रों रहन सहन तथा रीति रिवाज रिवाजों का चित्रों मूर्तियों एवं प्रदर्शनों के माध्यम से दर्शन कराया गया है। साथ ही समय-समय पर यहां पर कई सांस्कृतिक आयोजन, कार्यशालाएं आदि आयोजित की जाती हैं जिससे कि लोगों को आदिवासी समाज की मान्यताओं कला संस्कृति के बारे में ज्ञान मिल सके। कई प्रादर्श जोकि मूल रूप से आदिवासी संस्कृतियों में उपयोग किए जाते हैं, यहां प्रदर्शित किए गए हैं।
यहां पर मध्य प्रदेश की प्रमुख जनजाति जैसे गोंड जिनका मुख्यता निवास बैतूल होशंगाबाद मंडला सागर छिंदवाड़ा बालाघाट तथा शहडोल में है।
भील जिनका निवास मुख्यता झाबुआ अलीराजपुर धार बड़वानी खरगोन एवं रतलाम में है। भील अपने आपको वाल्मीकि और एवं एकलव्य का वंशज मानते हैं। इनकी कई उप जातियां जैसे भिलाला पट्टी लिया बारेला एवं राठिया हैं। टंट्या भील भारत के स्वतंत्रता संग्राम की उल्लेखनीय स्वतन्त्रता संग्राम सेनानी है जो की इसी जनजाति से आते है।
कोरकू जनजाति मध्य प्रदेश के सतपुड़ा पर्वतमाला क्षेत्र के छिंदवाड़ा बैतूल होशंगाबाद जिले के विभिन्न गांवों में निवास करते हैं।
बैगा जनजाति यह मुख्यता मंडला डिंडोरी शहडोल उमरिया बालाघाट एवं अमरकंटक के वन प्रदेशों में रहते हैं। बैगा जनजाति को छोटा नागपुर क्षेत्र की भूमियां जनजाति से निकली एक शाखा माना जाता है।
कोल मध्य प्रदेश की दूसरी सबसे बड़ी जनजाति है एवं इसकी 22 उपशाखाएं हैं।
भारिया यह मुख्यतः जबलपुर एवं छिंदवाड़ा जिले में निवासरत हैं।
सहरिया यह मध्य प्रदेश के शिवपुरी गुना ग्वालियर मुरैना भिंड विदिशा रायसेन सीहोर एवं बुंदेली जिलों में निवासरत हैं।
इन सभी जनजातियों के सांस्कृतिक तथा सामाजिक परिदृश्य को चित्रों प्रदर्शन एवं कलाकृतियों द्वारा अत्यंत प्रभावी ढंग से इस संग्रहालय में प्रदर्शित किया गया है।
