Driving from Old Faithful to West Yellowstone
Here's a look at the drive from Old Faithful, at the geyser basin inside Yellowstone National Park, up to Madison, and on to the western park exit at West Yellowstone, Montana.

I made this trip in July 2017. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

Madison Campground in Yellowstone National Park Wyoming provides primitive tent and RV camping at the junction of West Entrance Road and US 20 inside the park. Close to Firehole River, Old Faithful and the Upper, Midway and Lower Geyser Basins this scenic campground provides a mix of pull thru and backin sites situated in a wooded setting. Managed by concessionaire reservations are recommended.
Paved roads and multiple loops Madison is one of the few campgrounds that can accommodate larger rigs in the pull thru sites (although serious leveling is usually needed). Onsite camphosts and staffed entrance station keep traffic low within the multiple loops. Hiking trails depart the area with popular short walks to the overlook of the Madison River where you can spot all types of wildlife roaming through the prairie below.
Each site has a picnic table, fire ring and shared bear boxes. Restrooms with running water and dish cleaning stations available. A dump station is also available. Group sites accommodate larger groups with reservations required for these sites.
Cycling enthusiasts enjoy riding from here down and around the Firehole River Rd; traffic tends to be slower moving and the shoulder is reasonably wide. It is 20 minutes from Madison west to West Yellowstone for restaurants and grocery.
Madison River is a beautiful river open to non-barbed fly fishing only.
Due to its easy to access and central location Madison Campground is a popular campground. With any sites not reserved in advance normally filled/ taken early in the morning.

Yellowstone In A Day
It started out as a sunny day in Yellowstone, but by the end of the day it turned stormy. This is a virtual road trip entering the West Entrance heading to Madison. From there, we turned south into the Old Faithful Area. If you continue south, you will arrive at Lake via Yellowstone Lake. Now you are heading north, past Hayden Valley and into Canyon. From Canyon we took the road to Norris and then turned North again to Mammoth Hot Springs and out the North Entrance. You will see the original Entrance to Yellowstone with the Arch. It states For the Benefit and Enjoyment of the People. Last you will see Garnier, MT and the storm we went through continuing to Livingston, MT. See if you can see what the last is in the video at the very end. Can you see the giant? Enjoy!

Why Traveling West is so Great: Glacier National Park: Yellowstone
In 2018 the family traveled to Glacier National Park in the month of July. We stopped at the Badlands and Yellowstone National Parks on our way there. The parks were very busy this time of year, and it was difficult to find camping and parking. This was our Grandma's first time to Glacier or Yellowstone, and she absolutely fell in love with the parks (besides the crowds). We brought our black and tan coon hounds with us as well (Si and Cooper). It can be hard traveling to these parks with dogs. Best advise is to camp at dog friendly sites outside of the parks, and take a vehicle that can run a/c 24/7.
This is an emotional video for us at Ohiofiveo. This was our last trip with Cooper. He was a rescue with one eye. He lived a crazy adventurous life (as you can see), but May of 2019 the vet found out he had chronic kidney disease. Cooper passed away peacefully May 18th of 2019. He was truly one of a kind and will be missed greatly.
Sorry about any camera fuzz, the filming was done hastily due to the limited amount of time we had.

It has been an intense week for buffalo. BFC volunteers are out in the field and on the road with the buffalo nearly 24 hours a day. If you are able to join us on the front lines, please see our call for volunteers below. The buffalo and BFC need you!
Near Gardiner, along Yellowstone's north boundary, National Park Service and Department of Livestock agents have been actively hazing various groups of buffalo. Multiple management actions aimed to appease cattle interests have been taking place within this enormous wildlife migration corridor. So far, there have been no buffalo captured. Yesterday, four bulls were hazed back to Yellowstone, and again today, Park Rangers hazed 32 buffalo to just outside the Roosevelt Arch. Other groups of buffalo are around the Gardiner area, including some in town.
On the western boundary, a few bull bison were hazed back into Yellowstone National Park earlier this week by Montana Department of Livestock (DOL) agents. The buffalo's crime was in stepping onto the private land of the Koelzer family, who allows the DOL to operate the Duck Creek bison trap on their property. Like so many other obstacles the buffalo must face, the Koelzer property and other houses with fenced in yards block a migration route favored especially by bull bison.
There has been a large bachelor group of bull bison roaming the area near Duck and Cougar Creeks, along Highways 191 and 287 this week; they are massive and incredibly impressive. BFC has been with these bulls every day and through the nights, warning traffic of their presence. Buffalo have no qualms about walking right down the middle of the road, sometimes side by side in numbers, taking the highway over. It's a beautiful sight; this is their land and they are happy to remind us of it. Numerous travelers can't help but pull over in admiration; being in the presence of North America's largest land mammals is truly an awesome experience. It is shameful and sad that these magnificent creatures who have been around for over 10,000 years are forced to abandon their ancient practices, and unwillingly yield to the selfish wishes of Montana's cattle industry. So far, other than the challenges of fences and traffic, these bulls have been left alone, but we don't trust that the DOL will leave them in peace for long.
Along the south side of the Madison River, the DOL, National Park Service, Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks, and U.S. Forest Service, with aid from Gallatin County law enforcement, have been hazing buffalo in earnest, all week. According to the new adaptive changes to the IBMP, 30 buffalo are allowed to be in this area, but they only have a few miles of ground where they are tolerated. These tolerance zones are meaningless to buffalo who know no man-made borders. They continued their migration and agents began to haze them when they approached private property owned by someone who does not like bison, about a mile from Idaho's border. View BFC's footage here. The panting and terrified buffalo were run by agents on snowmobiles and in trucks down busy Highway 20, through barbed wire fences and deep snow, before losing them in the thick forests along the Madison River. This area is always a challenge for the agents; the woods are wide and thick and the clever buffalo lose the agents every time. So today the DOL brought out their ATVs and helicopter and proceeded to disrupt the ecosystem. Approximately 29 buffalo, including many pregnant mamas, fled through the forest to escape the thumping blades of the chopper. In the course of the haze, the DOL apparently scared up two grizzly bears, who were disrupted by the pounding helicopter and yelling agents. Hazing operations harm not only buffalo, but all of the creatures who live in this ecosystem including wolves, moose, elk, Sand Hill cranes, bald and golden eagles, fox, badgers, and more.
Bison continue to make their way in and out of the Park, to and from Horse Butte and surrounding areas, having to cross Highway 191 to access critical habitat. We are continuously out on the roads, putting up our hot pink warning signs, and helping prevent bison/vehicle collisions. We are pleased to report that there have been no more bison highway mortalities. Unfortunately, one of our Buffalo Crossing signs was vandalized by an unknown antagonist. We are making attempts to fix it, but we may need to purchase a new one.
We expect that agents will be out harassing buffalo full time, through the end of May or even beyond. Even though there is not a cow in sight, and there has never been a case of wild bison transmitting brucellosis to them anyway. The mismanagement of America's last wild population of bison must end. Please, if you have not already done so, contact President Barack Obama and urge him to take positive action for these gentle grazers who can heal the wounded land.

Virginia City, Montana and beyond
Virginia City is a town in and the county seat of Madison County, Montana, United States.[1] In 1961, the town and the surrounding area was designated a National Historic Landmark District, the Virginia City Historic District. The population was 130 at the 2000 census.
In May 1863, a group of prospectors were headed towards the Yellowstone River and instead came upon a party of the Crow tribe and were forced to return to Bannack. Gold was discovered on the retreat trip when Bill Fairweather stuck a pick near Alder Creek joking he might find something to fund some tobacco.
The prospectors could not keep the site a secret. They were followed on their return to the gold bearing site and set up the town in order to formulate rules about individual gold claims. On June 16, 1863 under the name of Verina the township was formed a mile south of the gold fields. The name was meant to honor Varina Howell Davis, first and only First Lady of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. Verina, although in Union territory, was founded by men whose loyalties were thoroughly Confederate. Upon registration of the name, a Connecticut judge, G. G. Bissell, objected to their choice and recorded it as Virginia City.
In 1864, the Montana Territory was carved out of Idaho Territory. Virginia City, claiming 10,000 citizens, was made the capital of the new territory in 1865. The first public school was built in 1866, but already the most easily accessible gold from placer mining had been exploited and development and population in the territory was moving towards Helena.

YELLOWSTONE - by Anthony Marr
This video contains 300 images distilled from the 700 taken of the Yellowstone National Park (63 x 54 miles) during a 2-day period in July 2015. It covers the western entrance and the inside loop including Madison River, the geysers, Kepler falls, the Western Thumb Geyser Basin, Yellowstone Lake, the Yellowstone River, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, glimpses of its wildlife and a few other features especially of the underlying caldera (30 x 40 miles). Next time we will access the park from the eastern or northern entrance.
Audio: Rather than music, you will find two plenary speeches by Anthony Marr given at the Animal Rights National Conference of 2011 and 2008 respectively. They both concern global warming and its impact on Earth's ecosystems, including Yellowstone, and the fate of all species on Earth, including our own.
We hope that this little touch of Yellowstone magic will inspire our children to save the planet for their own children.

Yellowstone
In this episode of CheapFamilyTravel ( Nick, Regan, Maggie & Kate visit the geysers and animals of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. There is no other place in the world like Yellowstone. You have to see the geysers, hot springs and mudpots for yourself. See Old Faithful blow and experience the amazing colors in the springs. You can walk the boardwalks and trails at Old Faithful, West Thumb, Midway and Norris Geyser Basins. Visit the shops and visitor centers throughout the park. But our favorite thing about Yellowstone are the animals. There are buffalo and elk everywhere, but we also saw beaver, osprey, marmots, wolves and bears. We love driving Hayden and Lamar Valleys in the morning and at dusk to see the herds of prong horn and wolf pups playing. Ask around and look for people with scopes to find the animals. Also, make some time to visit Upper & Lower Yellowstone Falls in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The views are absolutely breath-taking. Yellowstone is the perfect cheap family vacation because the geysers, animal watching and hiking are all free activities that every family will enjoy.

The 1959 Yellowstone Earthquake
At 11:37 p.m. on August 17, 1959, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake rocked Montana’s Yellowstone country. In an instant, an entire mountainside fractured and thundered down onto the sites of unsuspecting campers. The mammoth avalanche generated hurricane-force winds ahead of it that ripped clothing from backs and heaved tidal waves in both directions of the Madison River Canyon. More than two hundred vacationers trapped in the canyon feared the dam upstream would burst. As debris and flooding overwhelmed the river, injured victims frantically searched the darkness for friends and family. Acclaimed historian Larry Morris tells the gripping minute-by-minute saga of the survivors who endured the interminable night, the first responders who risked their lives and the families who waited days and weeks for word of their missing loved ones. (Thursday Night at the Museum—September 29, 2016)
