BUBBLE HOTEL, ICELAND | Sonia Nicolson
Last week I had the chance to stay overnight in the Aurora Bubble Hotel, known as the 5 Million Star Hotel, so I took my Mum and we headed off to sleep in a bubble under the stars. A beautifully crisp winters day, we arrived into a winter wonderland, ready for the Aurora and to sleep under a blanket of stars.
The Bubbles act like a hotel and provide you with a room which is fully transparent, providing the perfect Northern Lights Hotel. Each Bubble sleeps two adults in a comfortable double bed, minimum age is six years old for health and safety reasons. The structure is completely inflatable and made out of a fire-retardant PVC tarpaulin, you literally sleep in a bubble. The structure keeps itself inflated by a slight over-pressure from a noiseless ventilation system. The system is designed to renew the air 2-7 times per hour, this also prevents any humidity. The system has an heating element with thermostat so the Bubble is cosy and warm all winter.
Nestled in a small Icelandic wood the Bubbles are the ideal Northern Lights viewing platform, lie back and watch the starry sky. Sleep under the stars, right in the woods, it's a very special night. Some of the Bubbles have a white panel around the bottom of the walls at bed height which gives a little privacy but this doesn't interfere with any Northern Lights viewing.
The location of the Bubbles is kept secret until you have booked but I can tell you that they are located in the countryside near Fludir and the Golden Circle. It's about an hours drive from Reykjavik and two hours from Keflavik Airport. The Bubbles are nestled in a beautiful spot, set back from the road and surrounded by trees. You can also see the volcanos Katla and Eyjafjallajökull in the distance.
This is an opportunity to truly chill out - lie back and take it all in. Sleeping under the stars and watching the Aurora Borealis dance above you might be a dream come true. It’s the ultimate glamping experience. So, if the sky is clear of clouds then you will hopefully have a good chance of seeing a starry sky with some magical Northern Lights dancing above your head.
The Bubbles are part of a tour offered by Northern Lights Iceland. This means that you can't stay without booking the full tour. The tour is fabulous and takes you in a luxury suburban jeep to the Golden Circle stopping at Geysir, Gulfoss and the Secret Lagoon. The tour group is small, maximum six people, and there are only nine Bubbles on the site so it feels very private.
Nearby is the town of Fludir where you could take in the waters of the Secret Lagoon. This is a unique natural hot spring, the oldest swimming pool in Iceland (made in 1891). The water holds at 38-40 Celsius (100-104 Fahrenheit) all year round. Swim and float around, try to find the hottest part of the lagoon. You can also take a short walk around the lagoon to see the beautiful landscape, original changing hut, natural geysirs heating the lagoon and the nearby greenhouse.
If you are looking for food then there is Minilik, an Ethiopian Restaurant nearby and this gets great reviews. We went to Mika, a family run restaurant specialising in handmade chocolates and langoustine dishes. I highly recommend the langoustine soup and garlic bread.
As the Bubbles are small, there isn’t room for a suitcase or many belongings so pack light. A small rucsac or hand luggage sized case is ideal. Pack you pyjamas, wash bag, camera (and tripod for Aurora shots), a good book and your swimming stuff for the Secret Lagoon. Towels are provided at the Bubble but bring your own for the Secret Lagoon.

Trip to Iceland: About Iceland
Once you visit Iceland, a land of gushing geysers where the sky glitters with the Northern Lights, you may understand why some of its residents are convinced that fairies and giants still roam the earth, or at least their corner of it. Iceland's landscapes are dramatic and strange, perfect for avid photo-takers, and the country remains relatively uncrowded, even at peak tourist season. As otherworldly as it may sound, travel to Iceland is actually quite easy - and when you're ready to go, our Iceland travel guide will lead you to all the magical spots of this unique country.

Trip to Iceland: When to Go
Iceland has a concentrated tourist season, peaking from mid-June through August. Many Icelanders think the summer tourists don't know what they're missing. Iceland offers plenty to do in spring, fall, even winter, and prices are dramatically lower for airfares, car rentals, and accommodations. Icelanders are avid Christmas celebrators, and the Aurora Borealis is remarkably vivid in winter. Most off-season visitors use Reykjavík as a home base, and combine city culture and nightlife with activities such as horseback riding, snowmobiling, and visiting spas.

Trip to Iceland: Typical cost
Hostel – Hostel dorms cost between 3,500-7,500 ISK per night and Hosteling International members get 650 ISK off. Private rooms cost around 11,500 ISK per night for HI members, and for non-members, it is 12,500 ISK.
Hotels – Hotels are generally pricier than your hostels and guesthouses. One thing to keep in mind is that not all hotel rooms are going to have a private bathroom. You can expect to pay around 20,000 ISK and up per night for a double room with a private bathroom,
Average cost of food – Eating out, even on the cheap, costs about 1,300 ISK or more per meal. At this price point, you’re looking at sandwiches, kebabs, soups, and other “quick meals.” You can find small sandwiches for around 1,000 ISK at some of the outdoor kiosks. For main dishes from a sit-down restaurant with table service expect to pay at least 2,000 ISK. Happy hour beer is around 700 ISK, while non-happy prices range between 1,000-1,200 ISK. Groceries (basic pasta, eggs, skyr, rice, chicken, and some veggies) will cost 8,700 ISK per week. For cheap meals, consider the hot dog vendors that line the streets of major cities. They cost 400-500 ISK for a basic dog (without added toppings).
Transportation costs – During the summer months, you can purchase a countrywide bus pass for 42,000 ISK. Bus tickets start from 3.50 ISK (within Reykjavik for a single ride) to being free in some cities (like Akureyri). The popular bus route that runs from Reykjavik to Akureyri costs about 8,800 ISK. Car rentals cost about 5,350 ISK per day, with gas costing around 192 ISK per liter.

2018 Iceland 4x4 Nature Tour, off the beaten track.
Iceland Nature Tour for 12 people in 3 Super Jeeps.
Toursgallery has another tour departing in June 2018 on which you will see The MIDNIGHT SUN.
June is late Spring / early Summer and the start of puffin season, when everyone can watch millions of these bright beak birds in the Westman Islands and Latrabjarg cliffs.
We go in June, getting off the beaten track to avoid the crowds of Summer tourists in Iceland. Green grassy meadows are full of colourful wildflowers, bilberry, wild rose, scurvygrass, rockcress, bearberry, marsh marigold, arctic poppy, willow, gentian and lupin to name just a few.
Visit the wild beauty of Iceland, famed for birdlife, volcanos
and its Viking and Saga history. Toursgallery also includes plenty of good food and a warm, relaxing soak in geothermal pools.
Nature lovers will be awe struck by the thundering waterfalls of Iceland, the original Geyser geothermal field. We will also take you to visit glaciers, a volcano, a horse farm, go bird watching and looking for seals.
Our daily programme is focused on your experiencing as much as possible and getting a real Icelandic nature experience at a steady pace.
This small group soft adventure is designed for people
who appreciate the benefits of having local guides as well as one tour manager who will be with you for the entire journey.
We take only 12 guests from Reykjavik, travelling in a convoy of 3 Super Jeeps in Iceland, which will enable us to get off the main road and into some spectacular scenic locations. All our 4 wheel drive vehicles are equipped with satellite navigation and duel radio communication and are heated for your comfort. All accommodation is either 4 star rated or the best available in each location.
Unlike other tours that are not escorted or are a succession of generic 'seat in a bus' tours strung together, we have created an exclusive journey with unique content that we believe is more personal, off the beaten track and designed for the more discerning traveller.

In Iceland The Yule Lads are coming to town this Christmas
(10 Dec 2018) LEAD IN :
Santa Claus may be coming to towns across the world this December, but in Iceland children await not just one Santa Claus, but 13 trolls known as the 'Yule Lads' who come to town during the 13 days before Christmas.
Each has his own task, putting rewards or punishments into the shoes of little children.
STORYLINE :
Here come the 'Yule Lads' trudging through wind and snow.
The people of northern Iceland have had their travel plans disrupted with a record high snowfall this December.
Roads have been shut, flights cancelled and school suspended.
But the main worry for the children of this rugged North Atlantic island nation is how this might affect an Icelandic troll named Stekkjastaur, and his arrival Tuesday night.
Stekkjastaur, after all, has a stiff peg-leg.
He is one of 13 troll brothers, called the 'Yule Lads' , that have entertained and also frightened children for hundreds of years.
Until the 20th century, the brothers were mischievous and stories of them were used to torment children.
They include Stufur, or Stubby, who is extremely short and eats crusts left in pans; Pottaskefill, or Pot-Scraper, who snatches leftovers; and Hurdaskellir or Door-Slammer, who likes to slam doors at night.
Today, children enjoy favors from the 'Yule Lads' for the 13 days leading to Christmas, which Icelanders celebrate on the 24th of December.
That means 13 extra presents for Christmas.
The brothers carry funny names, Pot-Licker, Door-Slammer, Window-Peeper and Candle-Stealer, reflecting their preferred method of pranks or, in fact, criminal behaviour.
But they claim to be mostly rehabilitated and Sausage-Swiper is now keen to host barbecues.
In a rare interview with The Associated Press, two of them admitted being doing things last minute, like most people for Christmas.
Well, I should be getting ready, says Stekkjastaur, whose name translates 'Sheep pen idiot', after arriving from Iceland's interior to the lava fields of Dimmuborgir.
We have a lot going on these days, he adds.
Among the tasks is replying to letters sent from children around the world. The letters are actually addressed to to Santa Claus, with the address varying between Arctic Circle, Candy Lane or North Pole, but the Icelandic Yule Lads are happy to help their foreign colleague.
Soffia Jonsdottir, who has taken the role of Santa's secretary in Iceland, says the Icelandic Postal Service forwards all Santa mail to the tiny northeastern outpost where the Yule Lads have a shiny red mailbox.
Santa is a distant relative of the Yule Lads, she says. We reply to every letter if there is a return address.
The letters arrive during all months of the year and often include a wish-list, a personal gift or simply a warm greeting. The Yule Lads, who speak Icelandic, admit sometime struggling with foreign languages.
In the capital Reykjavik children at Managardur kindergarten are counting down to the arrival of the first Yule Lad.
Well-behaved children will wake up to a gift in their shoe on Wednesday (December 12) morning; naughty get a rotten potato. These children all claim to deserve a gift.
I hope I get a book, says Anita Heidrunardottir, 5. She adds that her sister is frightened by the Yule Lads.
Terry Gunnell, professor in folklore at the University of Iceland, says the Yule Lads had traditionally been used to discipline children when adults were busy preparing for the holiday.
Gunnell says the phenomenon, in a way, represented nature.

WHAT IS ICELAND LIKE IN SUMMER? ????????????? Travel vlog
Planning a trip to Iceland and wondering when to visit? Winter vs Summer? Which one to choose...
We've been here during both seasons and the weather, excursions, and landscapes can change drastically. During the month we visited, we saw rainbows ????, wildlife ????, flowers ????, midnight sun☀️, and great road trip driving conditions.
Our first visit to Iceland was in winter, and we revisit in summer to get a completely different perspective of the country.
Some sights are almost unrecognizable in summer. We visit Sólheimajökull glacier - which is covered in bright green moss instead of snow and ice. We see the running springs from the glacier's melting ice.
Next, we visit Reykjavik where we enjoy the midnight sun and walk around the colorful streets for Reykjavik Pride week. We spot the rainbow sidewalk and multicolored buildings. We eat traditional Icelandic food at Icelandic Street Food where we order the lamb soup. Lastly, we watch the light show at the Harpa!
