A walking tour of The Forts, the most popular walking track on Magnetic Island (Australia). It contains information on the flora and fauna, including Koalas, and the area's WWII heritage.

The Forts Walk is approximately 3 km long and took us about 2 hours return. It winds its way along a ridge and up to the ruins of the old forts. Really beautiful and mysterious place.

One of the most popular tracks on the island, the Forts walk leads to historic WWII fortifications and infrastructure. Lookouts along the way afford excellent views to the Palm Island Group in the north and Bowling Green Bay National Park in the south. Koalas are often seen in trees along the track. The walk culminates in 360 degree views from the top of the fortifications.
Starting on Horseshoe Bay Road at the turn-off to Radical Bay, the track ascends, sometimes steeply, to follow a ridge behind the bays before arriving at the ruins of the Forts complex operated during World War II.

Fort Walk. es una ruta de montaña de ida y vuelta que discurre por unas zonas con restos de defensas de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En el camino, nos paramos para admirar las impresionantes vistas al Grupo de Palm Island en el norte y al Parque Nacional Bowling Green Bay en el sur. Las Unidades de artillería de la costa australiana operaron el complejo Forts desde 1943 hasta el final de la Guerra del Pacífico en 1945. CONSEJO: ¡Recuerda mirar hacia arriba también! A really pleasant hike through Magnetic Island in far North Queensland. This hike has a great amount of wildlife. We spotted many birds and some Koalas :) The hike also has some really great wartime history. You are following the paths of the old forts that helped protect Australia in 1943.

We absolutely love Koalas, so we knew we just had to try and see one in the wild. With Magnetic Island having the largest wild Koala colony in Northern Queensland, we were really hoping to see one on the Forts Walk while we were there. And we did!

This perfect weekend escape is just 20 minutes from Townsville. Introducing, Magnetic Island. This little slice of paradise is the Great Barrier Reef's only island with its own postcode – fun fact!
Two-thirds of Magnetic Island is National Park and is surrounded by easily accessible bays and sandy beaches just waiting to be explored as well as encapsulated by granite boulders adding to its unique charm.
The best way to experience Maggie, as it is affectionately known to the locals, is to get off the bitumen and explore the natural surroundings of this island paradise.

THINGS TO DO ON MAGNETIC ISLAND - Queensland, Australia
If you're a longtime reader of my blog you're probably quite aware that typical tourist beaches are not my cup of tea. When I visit an island I like something a little more secluded or rough around the edges. I'm not the type of person who enjoys lounging around on the beach tanning all day long. With red hair, pale skin and freckles I'm like a lobster by the end of the day if I engage in such activities.

Moreover, I simply wouldn't enjoy it under any circumstances (even if my skin bronzed as opposed to burned). Arriving on Maggie Island it didn't take me long to start warming up to the region. With plenty of rustic charm, hiking trails, wildlife and distinct lack of people it was the kind of place where I felt I was exploring as opposed to just experiencing. There is just something about the locals as well that was really charming. Aside from being overtly friend and hospitable, they exuded a laid back kind of personality that reminds me of the small town I'm from in Canada. Located just a few kilometers from Townsville, Magnetic Island was the perfect city getaway.
The island offers lots of walking trails, great beaches and a hint of rugged charm.
Here is a look at some of the activities we got to try during our visit to Maggie Island.
We are here at the Horseshoe Ranch at the north end of the island and we are going to be going horseback riding.
That was actually a really fun ride. We just finished riding our horses through the bush and one of my favorite parts was getting to see Wallabies in the wild just hopping around as we were passing through with our horses.
If you find yourself on Magnetic Island going horseback riding is a lot of fun.
This morning here on Magnetic Island we are going to be doing something pretty cool. We've gotten up really early and we are having a Bush Tucker breakfast, which is meant to be a very traditional breakfast, so we're going to show you what that is like.
We also got to try a Bush Tucker Champagne breakfast which featured a delicious spread of food including pancakes, fresh fruit and grilled meats.
And after breakfast we're going to be doing something really cool. We're going to have authentic Australian animal encounters. We're going to be putting snakes around our necks, hugging koalas and you have never had a snake around your neck, so this should be kind of interesting.
So how is that? It is good.
We have some free time this afternoon on the island and we've decided to do the Magnetic Island forts walk, which is supposed to be 4 kilometers. It is a return trip and it should take about an hour and a half. This is supposed to be Northern Australian's largest colony of Koalas in the wild. Hopefully we'll be able to spot a koala or two.
Well, so far it has been a fascinating hike but we haven't seen any koalas yet. But the one thing that is happening is that I'm sweating profusely, so I'm going to guzzle some water here.
We are here in Nelly Bay. We were just enjoying a walk along the waterfront and we noticed that there are some Wallabies over there on the rocks. Now I've never seen Wallabies before but I think they look a lot like small kangaroos, so they are pretty cute. I was kind of surprised to see them here because they usually hangout in Arcadia by Jeffery beach so it was a nice little surprise.
Now we're in the northern part of Magnetic Island or as locals like to call it Maggie Island and this is Horseshoe Bay. What we're going to be doing here is just taking a nice beachfront walk.
Our time on Magnetic Island was a nice balance of adventure and relaxation. If you ever find yourself in Queensland we highly recommend this little spot.

Australia Day 11: Townsville, Magnetic Island
Byron is Rachy‘s man servant for the day. He does chores around the house, cooks breakfast, and fetches lunch. As a reward Byron and Rachy go to Magnetic Island for dinner.

Get acquainted with the island by exploring the National Park and hiking the iconic Fort Walk which leads to historic WWII fortifications and infrastructure and is home to 800 koalas. Lookouts along the way afford excellent views to the Palm Island Group in the north and Bowling Green Bay National Park in the south.
Conclude your day with a sunset horse ride along the beach at Horseshoe Bay.

PALM TREE HEAVEN
Magnetic Island is a secret slice of happiness. The vibes on this island are surreal. Located a short ferry ride off the coast of Townsville in Tropical North Queensland, “Maggie” as it’s affectionately known by the locals, is an Island known for fun. The easiest way for you to explore the island is by hiring a ‘Mini-moke’. These little golf buggy-like cars will be able to take you to parts that you can’t access on foot, like Horseshoe Bay, which is an absolute must-see.
If you’re a little more on the energetic side, Magnetic Island is an awesome place to go hiking and exploring as most of the island is a National Park. We recommend doing ‘The Forts’ walk. It’s a 4km hike that takes you through the forest, up and over some massive rocks and ascends to a lookout peak that will give you the most breathtaking views of the island. Truly special. When you get to the end, you will come across old concrete forts that were used in World War II, not going to lie, they are kind of creepy but super cool.
Maggie is also surrounded by coral reef, so swimming and snorkeling are a must. You’ll see lots of tropical fish and turtles. And maybe sharks. But don’t worry they’re baby ones.... Mostly.

Magnetic Island Forts Walk And Seeing Koalas in the Wild for the First Time
Surprisingly one of the longer walks you can do on Magnetic Island (they're all pretty short). I decided to go for sunset, to catch the best views you can get on the island. I was super happy to see some koalas in the wild for the very first time in my life. People coming by put down twigs to point arrows to where they spotted the sleepy heads. Luckily for us, they don't really move that much! ;) If you decide to come for sunset, make sure you bring a flash light to get back down and keep an eye on the bus schedule beforehand. There's also parking available, if you decide to come by car or scooter. In one of the forts you can get a really good history lesson, I learned so much in my time in Townsville and on Magnetic Island! Two very significant places for the history of Australia. I HIGHLY recommend you check out the Forts Walk when on Magnetic Island!
