Then & Now (1849-2014) Magnolia Cemetery - Charleston, SC
The one with Charleston Magnolia Cemetery in it
A few weekends ago, an old buddy stopped by for the weekend. We were heading into downtown Charleston for lunch (and a glorious golden beverage) and decided to stop and look around Magnolia Cemetery: Incredible place, poignant and peaceful. If you are planning a visit to #chucktown then I strongly recommend a look around this beautiful historic cemetery.

Directions to Manigault Gravesite
Brother Josh Orendi and Brother Matt Mattson have provided video directions to the grave site of one of Alpha Sigma Phi's Founders, Louis Manigault.
Written directions from the Alpha Sigma Phi website:
If visiting Brother Manigault's grave site at Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston, South Carolina, you will drive straight for roughly 50 feet past the entrance and then veer toward your left. That will take you to a narrow road between two ponds. Upon crossing the narrow road, turn left onto the grass (note: you will drive very close to burial plots). Drive for roughly 200 feet and then veer toward your right. The grave site is next to a very large oak tree at the end of a set of plots. There appears to be a grass road on either side of his plot, and he is surrounded by his family.

Charleston, the South Carolina port city founded in 1670, is defined by its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and pastel antebellum houses, particularly in the elegant French Quarter and Battery districts. The Battery promenade and Waterfront Park both overlook Charleston Harbor, while Fort Sumter, a federal stronghold where the first shots of the Civil War rang out, lies across the water.
The zenith of old-world charm, Charleston whisks you into the nation's tumultuous past and nourishes your mind, heart and stomach in roughly equal measure. This lovely city will embrace you with the warmth and hospitality of an old and dear friend – who lived in the 18th century. We jest, but the cannons, cemeteries and carriage rides absolutely conjure an earlier era. Here, signers of the Declaration of Independence puffed cigars and whispered of revolution in the withdrawing rooms of historic homes, and the first shots of the Civil War rang out over Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. The city itself was built on slave labor, and several related sights are among the nation's most important educators on the long-standing oppression of African Americans.
Charleston's most beloved 19th-century porch furnishing was the joggling board – a bouncy, wooden rocking bench that couples sat on back in the day as part of a courtship ritual. Not much has changed. Today lovers stroll cobblestone streets past historic buildings, stop to smell the blooming jasmine and enjoy long, candlelit dinners on verandas. Everywhere you turn another blushing bride is standing on the steps of yet another enchanting church. Above all, this is a place for seduction by Southern hospitality – Charleston will charm the sweat right off your brow.
Charleston was founded in 1670 as Charles Town, honoring King Charles II of England. Its initial location at Albemarle Point on the west bank of the Ashley River (now Charles Towne Landing) was abandoned in 1680 for its present site, which became the fifth-largest city in North America within ten years. Despite its size, it remained unincorporated throughout the colonial period; its government was handled directly by a colonial legislature and a governor sent by London. Election districts were organized according to Anglican parishes, and some social services were managed by Anglican wardens and vestries. Charleston adopted its present spelling with its incorporation as a city in 1783 at the close of the Revolutionary War. Population growth in the interior of South Carolina influenced the removal of the state government to Columbia in 1788.

SAD & HAUNTING - The Little Boy of 1855 in Graniteville Cemetery
See more:
In October 1855 a little boy arrived in Graniteville SC on a train. He was unconscious upon arrival. Concerned townspeople took him to the hotel (the old Leavelle McCampbell Middle School), where he died without regaining consciousness. Having no idea from whence he came or his name, he was buried in Graniteville Cemetery. People began leaving toys on his grave; they still do to this day. Soon after, stories began spreading of a little boy’s ghost playing with the toys left on the grave. This is his story, as we know it.
EPISODE TRANSCRIPT
I always like having someone I know with me when I travel. It probably makes good sense to do so. Things can happen and at the very least, you have some good laughs and share an experience together. Traveling can be very challenging, but imagine if you were a child and all alone?
A few weeks ago while researching for this series online, I came across a story that made me pause and then made me very sad. It had been a busy day of searching through Aiken County history that I found a picture of a grave with the inscription: The Little Boy, October 1855.
I thought to myself, what could this mean and why isn’t there more? Surely, he had someone who loved him and survived him. To learn the story, we must travel back in time, back to October of 1855.
Think about 1855 for a moment. Although this country was very wild, it was also evolving and growing. New industries and businesses were making their marks and with them towns were developing. Thanks to William Gregg, Graniteville had become a successful textile town with mills and canals feeding the industry. As the legend goes, in October of 1855 a train stopped in Graniteville and as the passengers disembarked at the train station. A commotion could be heard inside the train. A boy had been found and he was unconscious!
Somehow, someway, this little boy had stowed away inside the train. Hidden from the ticket collector, probably not eating and drinking for days on end, it is only speculation, but this could have led to his demise. And because he was unconscious, no answers could be had. The poor lost child died shortly after arriving and was buried here alone and unidentified.
The same feeling that went through my soul when I learned of the story must have happened to those in Graniteville’s past. A little boy, all alone, dying in an unfamiliar place.
And the thoughts continue to linger in my mind…was there a mother and father somewhere, far away who cried when they looked in his empty room? We’ll never truly know? Out of sadness and respect, people began placing toys on the grave they’ve been doing so for almost 160 years. In my research, I found stories where the ghost of a little boy can be seen by the gravesite playing with the toys. It has even been said that the spirit of a woman can be seen leaving flowers on the graves of children in the cemetery, leaving some to speculate that she may somehow be connected to the little boy.

Charleston, SC | Charleston Slave Mart
#charleston #slavemart #travelvlog
Charleston old Slave Mart is one of the last standing buildings where the scars of our nation are still evident. We begin our journey in the Saint Philip's Graveyard where more revolutionaries and Constitution signers are laid in one single location. This is significant to show just how much influence this city had on the national landscape.
We then travel to the Mill's House just to show where Robert E. Lee first met Trigger. Humorous, but proof that both he and Grant studied together right here at the Citadel.
We end our journey at the Charleston Old Slave Mart. It wasn't even a building - more of an alleyway originally with a four story pen to hold slaves.
Once you understand the percent of the power, and the influence of their point of view over an entire group of states and its people, it doesn't take much to apply that to today.
America's greatest sin lives on in new, clandestine ways.. much like why the Mart was built in the first place. Charlestonians didn't think it proper to openly sell on the streets and out of their offices. Instead they just moved it to a centralized place as if this was more proper.
Sounds familiar to today, but with different themes. Every little action and word matters. Don't accept the unacceptable in any form or fashion.
