Balloch is a small town in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, at the foot of Loch Lomond. Balloch comes from the Gaelic word bal (baile or ball) which means village or hamlet, so Balloch means village on the loch, i.e. the nearby Loch Lomond. The word bealach means a pass.
Balloch is at the north end of the Vale of Leven, straddling the River Leven itself. It connects to the larger town of Alexandria and to the smaller village of Jamestown, both of which are located to its south. It also borders the Kilpatrick Hills. To the east of the town lies the major local authority housing scheme in the area known as 'The Haldane' or 'The Mill of Haldane'. At 56 degrees N, Balloch is at about the same latitude as Moscow.
With its accessible location at the southern end of Loch Lomond and just off the main road from Glasgow to the West Highlands (A82), it is an important centre of tourism, especially from Glasgow and Dumbarton. The town has a number of hotels, inns and pubs, and there are cruises from Balloch up Loch Lomond, and other services, including to nearby locations like Luss, and the Renfrew Ferry service. The largest number of boats cruising on Loch Lomond leave from Balloch. The town is also the home of Dunkirk vessel Skylark XI which helped rescue 600 troops during WWII. It contains Balloch Country Park and Balloch Castle, and is at the southern end of the first Scottish national park, Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. There is a Sea Life Centre in the town. The Loch Lomond Youth Soccer Festival used to take place in the town. Lochfoot in the Jean Robertson novels of Jane Duncan is partly based on the town. The PS Maid of the Loch is currently being restored at Balloch pier and the Balloch Steam Slipway is located nearby.
The A811 road (based on an 18th-century military road) goes from Balloch to Stirling, and the A813 goes from Dumbarton to Balloch. The Glasgow to Loch Lomond cycle path (part of National Cycle Route 7) ends at Balloch. The West Loch Lomond Cycle Path also runs from Balloch. The town was formerly served by two railway stations on the Caledonian and Dunbartonshire Junction Railway: Balloch Central, and Balloch Pier, which closed in 1988 and 1986, respectively. The town now has one railway station opened by British Rail, which is a terminus of the North Clyde electric train service from Glasgow.

Maid of the Loch - Loch Lomond's Paddle Steamer

Visit Balloch Pier railway station, now long gone, except for the platform. See Inchmurrin, the largest island on the Loch, then go on to Balmaha, Inchcailleach, Inchlonaig, and Luss pier. Call in at Rowardennan, or Tarbet where the Trossachs beckon, before reaching Ardlui, the last outward stop.
Hopefully day trips like this on Loch Lomond can be revived with the full restoration of the Paddle Steamer Maid of the Loch by the Loch Lomond Steamship Company.

M V Countess of Breadalbane Trailer Video History Scotland
A few nostalgic scenes and fond memories for many of us of the brave little “Countess of Breadalbane” built by Denny’s of Dumbarton and launched on 7th May, 1936. This courageous little vessel led a varied service changing waters and names several times during her career. Having initially being built for sailings on Loch Awe she was subsequently transferred overland to Loch Fyne on 24th April 1952 to begin her Clyde service for many nostalgic years before being dismantled and transported to Drumkinnon Bay, Balloch in 1982. Here she was renamed once more to “Countess Fiona” and relaunched on 24th May 1982 where she enjoyed several seasons until her last season in 1989 whereupon she was laid up never to sail again. With growing public interest in restoration of “The Maid of the Loch” she was eventually ruthlessly and ignominiously broken up at Drumkinnon Bay in 1999 despite bids for her being received. Historic paddle steamer to be transformed ahead of £1 million project | SWNS TV | SWNS TV
A 65-year-old paddle steamer is to be hauled out of Loch Lomond ahead of a £1 million project to transform the historic vessel into a visitor experience. The Maid of the Loch, originally launched in 1953, will be taken out the water for only the second time in nearly 40 years today (Thur). Built by A. & J. Inglis in Glasgow, the steamer has laid out of service on the banks of Loch Lomond in Balloch, West Dunbartonshire since 1981. The slipping will see the 191-foot-long, 555-ton vessel hauled out of the water by the original winchhouse and onto the Balloch Steam Slipway, a Category A listed building.

Sunday 26th March 2017, Mother's Day and the start of British Summer Time. I picked Peter up at 7:30am in Whiteinch and we headed to Balloch to catch the Mandarin Ducks. No sign of them but Peter showed me the Maid of The Loch paddle steamer at Loch Lomond Shores. We then hit Arrochar to get the Pier with The Cobbler as a backdrop. Then onto Inveraray and Kilchurn to bag a few castles. Next up the St Conan Kirk on the Banks of Loch Awe, followed by The Pass of Brander at the western tip of the loch. Then Oban and McCaig's Tower. Castle Stalker next Appin next, followed by the Pap Of Glencoe at Ballachulish, The Glencoe Lochan, Glencoe and cumulating in a trip down Glen Etive to see Ben Starav and Ben Cruachan. Finishing by Ben Dorain near Tyndrum.
