Manatee Tour Florida
Hey everyone,
I traveled to florida with a group of crazy friends and we had a chance to go on a manatee tour in Homosassa Springs, which, I think is all part of the Crystal River they told us. It was so exciting and amazing! We saw a mother and her adorable calf. They were nursing but I didn't get a chance to see it happen. It was raining when we were on the boat but it stopped when we arrived to our location and eventually the sun lit up when we left. It was a bit cloudy but the river was still clear enough to see the manatees. It was a bit scary at first because the were HUGE but eventually we warmed up to the gentle giants. They are very curious creatures and some aren't afraid to come right up next to you for a rub. One of them even rolled over so we could rub their tummy! It was so cute! My group of friends weren't pro swimmers except for one, thats why you see us with life jackets supporting our bellies haha!
If you are thinking about taking a manatee tour I would recommend finding a tour that accommodates groups of 8 or less. We had a total of 11 people on our tour (7 of us and 4 others) and it was just too crowded I feel like.
This is the first time I used my Nikon D5100 camera underwater with a waterproof bag. It turned out better than I thought.
Here is the link to the bag that I used.

Swimming with Manatees Crystal River Florida
Majestic creatures! That you can swim with in Florida. One of my favorite things to do in Florida, don't miss this activity. SWIMMING WITH MANATEES! These animals live in the waters of Florida and during winter months you have the perfect opportunity to interact with these awesome creatures. Manatees need warm water to survive and because of the warm springs in Florida, they thrive there. The water is approximately 72 degrees during winter months and is perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
We start our journey with Bird's Underwater Dive shop which offers snorkeling tours to Crystal Springs and other areas in the region. Schedule your tour early in the day when the water is coldest in the gulf. As these waters warm up the manatees leave the spring to find a meal. These springs can be very active and manatees might even let you touch them, if your lucky. Due to weather, you never know what the visibility will be in the spring. So hope, for the best.
This is a must do, while visiting Florida. During our visit we started with a fitting of our wet suits, a pontoon boat ride to the spring, and then a once in a life time swim with manatees. We were also, instructed on the etiquette of how to respect these animals and achieve the best experience. Thank you, Bird's Underwater for such a great Adventure. The guides were awesome along with the manatees.

SNORKELING WITH MANATEES!!! Crystal River, SeaWorld, Character Building | Adventure NINETEEN
In this adventure, we snorkel with manatees in the Crystal River and make a visit to SeaWorld to see a manatee rehabilitation program in action. For a family that loves being on the water, it was important for us to teach our “ABCs” about the role we can play to help protect manatees and other mammals that are threatened mostly by human behavior.
Before this experience, we knew only a little about manatees, but after spending time with them in the Crystal River and at SeaWorld, we fell in love with these gentle mammals. Definitely a character building experience for all of us!
Here are all the details:
SeaWorld Orlando - Visiting SeaWorld was the perfect addition to the manatee experience for our family. We were able to show our “ABCs” a working manatee rescue and rehabilitation facility which was so important for them to understand the true impact humans have on these vulnerable mammals. We were able to see the scars on their backs and orphaned babies being bottle fed by the rescue team.
Captain Mike’s Swimming with the Manatees - What a great tour! We took the 7am boat ride and we were so glad we did! Our captain made the experience very enjoyable for all of us and knew all the perfect spots to find the manatees. It is obvious they love what they do. Prices were reasonable and the experience was once in a lifetime!
*Traveling ABCs Adventure Tips*
- We did see a handful of manatees, but we did not see hundreds like we would have if we would have gone a little earlier in the season.
-7am Tour. Even though it was a very early wake up call, we felt like we had a better shot of seeing more manatees before too many boats were on the river.
-Bring warm clothes and blankets. The water was cold! The wet suit protected us in the water, but once we were out we were certainly grateful for the warmer clothes.

Happy Adventuring!

My favorites:
I love the springs; just staring at it brings great peace. The canoe was also amazing, seeing Florida's wildlife up close- rent from the concession Anderson's Outdoor Adventures . The boardwalk that brings you over the Suwannee River is very easy and takes you through the natural landscape to the boat ramp. But, my all time favorite is the deer everywhere- see video. Please do not feed the deer; it makes them dependent and malnourished.
Description of park:
Manatee Springs State Park proves boardwalks aren’t only for the beach. Its 800 foot boardwalk runs through a majestic cypress forest overlooking one of Florida’s breathtaking first magnitude springs.
People have enjoyed the cool waters of manatee springs for more than 10,000 years, from early Paleo Indians to modern park visitors. This magnitude spring – one of Florida’s first - releases an astounding 100 million gallons of water daily. This makes it a popular cooling off spot and a great place to stroll on the park boardwalk and gaze into the depths.
True to its namesake, manatees can be seen in the cooler months and birds, mammals and fish are spotted year-round.
The park also offers 8.5 miles of nature trails and a safe connection to the 32-mile Nature Coast State Trail, so don’t forget to bring your bicycles!
History:
Manatee Springs was visited in 1774 by William Bartram (1739–1823) and described in his book Travels through North & South Carolina, East & West Florida, the Cherokee Country, the Extensive Territories of the Muscogulges, or Creek Confederacy, and the Country of the Chactaws, Containing an Account of the Soil and Natural Productions of Those Regions, Together with Observations on the Manners of the Indians (1791); it was named by Bartram himself (Manatee Springs) after seeing a manatee carcass on the shoreline of the spring run. Three Sisters Springs, Kings Bay, Crystal Springs, Florida
A solid trip into one of Florida's largest natural springs. Three sisters is part of the Crystal River network of springs. We hired Bird's underwater dive center to take us out. We learned you may not touch nor interfere with Manatees. Our experience was stunning. Up close and personal with one of the most gentle and majestic mammals of the sea. For the best experience you have to go when the weather is very cold. If its 80 out there will be NO manatees. If its 50 or 60 out then there will be many manatee. They need water temps about mid 60s to survive. Springs are a guarantee of 72 degrees for them in winter.
