This royal abode was originally completed 165 years ago in 1840 by Sultan Ali, the son of Sultan Hussein Shah. Located in the heart of the Kampong Glam Historic District, the restored two-story Istana Kampong Glam is now put to adaptive re-use as a museum. No. 85 Sultan Gate received the Category A Award in the 2005 Architectural Heritage Awards.

Backyard Traveller: Malay Heritage Centre, Singapore
My very first vlog created during Sujimy's vlogging course. Honoured to be able to go though a guided tour of the Malay Heritage Centre during their maintenance day (on every Mondays) - which explains the grass-cutter background music!

2019 Malay heritage Centre
Predominantly Islamic in atmosphere, the Kampong Glam and Arab Street precinct bristles with Malay, Indonesian, Lebanese, Egyptian, Turkish, and other Middle Eastern eateries. Ethnic restaurants mingle with nondescript hole-in-the-wall outlets, offering a disparate mix of eating experiences. A must-try for visitors is the ‘teh tarik’. This ‘pulled tea’ is made with sweetened condensed milk. A skilled, if not somewhat theatrical tea maker pours tea from on high, thus producing a frothily delightful taste. For local dishes, try the satay or rice with assorted dishes. By night, the shishas or hookas (water pipes filled with aromatic tobacco) together with cushions and carpets make their appearance in some restaurants, producing a laid-back Middle Eastern charm.

PM Lee at the Re-Opening of the Malay Heritage Centre at Kampong Glam
PM Lee was guest-of-honour at the re-opening of the Malay Heritage Centre at Kampong Glam on 1 Sep 2012. He said he was very glad the Malay Heritage Centre had become a national attraction and a focal point for the Malay community -- not just physically but as a platform to preserve cultural heritage and engage other Singaporeans.

How's everyone doing? ????
We hope you are having a great day.
Today we will take you inside the
MALAY HERITAGE CENTER, where
we'll discover a lot of interesting facts
about this rich and vibrant culture.
As you may know, the Philippines, even before it was colonized by Spain, was already a part of the Malayan World.
I remember in school, we learned in history class and in Social Studies class, that there were 3 major groups of people that crossed the footbridge path and came to live in the Islands;
the Aetas, the Malays and later the Indos. These were the first group of peoples that occupied these small islands of what now we call the Philippines Islands.
That is why Ed and I were so fascinated to see all the artifacts and the writings and stories that are stored in the very well put together museum.
Thanks for watching this video. We hope to inspire you, our friends and viewers, to enjoy life to the fullest. Discover this beautiful world in which we live in.
